Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler Jan 1997

Interpersonal Christian Prayer And Communication, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Nationwide statistical polling during the past 40 years have indicated that prayer is a frequent and important activity for a majority of Americans. Yet communication scholars have yet to theoretically consider the relationship between prayer and communication. This investigation compared and contrasted a particular type of prayer, Interpersonal Christ¦·n Prayer (ICP), with a particular type of communication context, Interpersonal Communication (IC). Results suggested that ICP and IC share common ground in their dyadic nature, intentionality, and in specific communication processes, and that they differ in the nature of the relational being one is communicating with, the locus of initial intent …

An Intellectual Approach To The Communication Of The Biblical Message To Secular People, Michele Buonfiglio

Professional Dissertations DMin

One of the most important responsibilities given Christians is to "make disciples from all nations." This includes secular people. The communication of the biblical message to secular people is a complex and difficult assignment. The difficulty increases when secular people are intellectuals. Many currents of thought including philosophy and scientific understandings of reality have contributed to the formation of the Western secular mind.

In Part One of the dissertation, philosophical, theological, and scientific theories that have contributed to the development of the process of secularization are considered. The section culminates with a profile of secular people. The methods and strategy …

Improving The Communication Of The Gospel Through Preaching: A Systematic Congregational Process, James Lamb May 1994

Improving The Communication Of The Gospel Through Preaching: A Systematic Congregational Process, James Lamb

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The message of Christian preaching, then, is unique because of the content of the message and who has revealed it. But the distinctiveness does not stop there. This particular form of rhetoric carries its own power to bring about change.

Communication Principles In Pastoral Counseling, Dieter Joel Jagnow May 1993

Communication Principles In Pastoral Counseling, Dieter Joel Jagnow

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are many elements involved in a pastoral counseling process. A handbook would include all or some topics such as a definition of pastoral counseling, its distinctive nature, its objectives, counseling techniques, and the role of God's Word in the process. In this thesis we will touch some of the basic topics of pastoral counseling. However, the main purpose is to approach an important ingredient of pastoral counseling that usually is not included as a separate topic in counseling manuals, that is, communication, particularly interpersonal communication.

This study intends to explore the pastoral counseling process as an interpersonal communication process …

A Communication Audit Of The Catholic Diocese Of Wheeling-Charleston, Larry W. Dorsch Jan 1992

A Communication Audit Of The Catholic Diocese Of Wheeling-Charleston, Larry W. Dorsch

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the principal existential task of the Church. "Communicating" and "the Gospel" both are terms loaded with philosophical underpinnings and practical implications that constantly challenge the church to examine its established patterns of ministry and behavior, as well as its priorities and budgets.

The strides in communication practice and technology of the twentieth century have shaken the church's modus operandi in ways that are unparalleled in the previous nineteen centuries of Christian faith. While to be sure the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century sparked major shifts and realignments in the …

The Liturgy: The Context Of Worship In The Context Of Media, Richard Handschin May 1971

The Liturgy: The Context Of Worship In The Context Of Media, Richard Handschin

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study is an attempt to gain perspective on the current disinterest in the organized church especially on the part of the young. To do this we intend to study the relationship between the worship of the church and the communication media, feeling that media are the fundamental fact in the development of social interaction.

Partners In Preaching, David Peters Mar 1971

Partners In Preaching, David Peters

Bachelor of Divinity

So the Institute for Advanced Pastoral Studies focused its attention on the whole process of communication with the hope that it would illuminate the dilemma of preaching. Briefly stated in paraphrase, this is its conclusions: Since communication is a two-way (dialogical) process, in which both parties to the conversation play an integral part in effecting maximum communication, the sermon, as a means of communication, is the creation (partnership) of both the preacher and the parishoner. Therefore, the members of any congregation are asked to be active participants in the church's preaching.4 As such, they have certain responsibilities toward every preaching …

An Analysis Of Level Of Activity As It Relates To Information Source And Two-Step Flow Of Communication In A Formal Organization, Carma Lois Wadley Jan 1971

An Analysis Of Level Of Activity As It Relates To Information Source And Two-Step Flow Of Communication In A Formal Organization, Carma Lois Wadley

Theses and Dissertations

There is a model of political communication which was developed by Elihu Katz and Paul F. Lazarsfeld, termed the two-step flow of communications theory, which this writer believes applies to the communication process of formal organizations. It is also the opinion of this writer that the two-step flow has a definite relation to the activity level of the members of the organization.
It will be the purpose of this study to look deeper into this problem. The specific formal organization discussed will be the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.
A study of this nature will have significance …

Mass Media And The Future Of Preaching, Duane Mehl Apr 1970

Mass Media And The Future Of Preaching, Duane Mehl

Concordia Theological Monthly

Contemporary electronic media threaten the stability of words, the ability of words to stay put in our culture. Since society depends on a common organization of words and word symbols for orderly function and for the transmission of tradition from generation to generation, the new media profoundly affect the very nature of our culture.

Dialogical Preaching, Harold Deye May 1968

Dialogical Preaching, Harold Deye

Bachelor of Divinity

Dialogue is the big word in communication today, and it is a principle that those who work in group dynamics have put to good use. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that principles of dialogue--principles which have proven their value in group dynamics--are useful, indeed necessary, in preaching, if real communication is going to take place. Implicit in the concept of dialogical preaching is the understanding that preaching is not a one-way phenomenon--from pulpit to pew--but that the listener has a function and responsibility in the communication that takes place on Sunday morning, both in response to …

An Inquiry Of Dialogical Preaching: Its Purpose, Procedure, And Evaluation, Edward Hummel Feb 1968

An Inquiry Of Dialogical Preaching: Its Purpose, Procedure, And Evaluation, Edward Hummel

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and evaluate dialogical preaching as a possible means for improving the effectiveness of communicating the Gospel of Jesus Christ to man. The process of dialogical preaching shall be examined not with the intention that it should abolish the present monological form of preaching, but rather that it might be considered as a means of supplementing and improving that preaching which attempts to integrate man’s faith in Christ with the happenings of his everyday life.

Editorial, Walter F. Wolbrecht Jul 1965

Editorial, Walter F. Wolbrecht

Concordia Theological Monthly

Expatriate missionaries in Ogoja province in Nigeria record and record again spoken words and phrases and discourses in tribal languages and area dialects. Wycliffe translators in Middle America invest countless hours in inventing an alphabet or devising a syntax. Bible society linguistic experts in the Philippine uplands or in New Guinea mountain enclaves search ceaselessly for idioms and equivalents as they reduce a language to writing and begin one more distinguished translation task. All these and many others are tackling endemic illiteracy as a formidable barrier in the preliterate or simply illiterate society to the full communication of the Gospel …

A Study Of The Communicative Process In Preaching, Harvey Donald Lange May 1962

A Study Of The Communicative Process In Preaching, Harvey Donald Lange

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to highlight some or the problems involved in the process of communication, in the process or transferring one's own thought into the mind of another. These problems will concern particu1arly some of the distractions and hindrances which deflect the pastor's sermon and even prevent it from entering into the mind of his hearer. This paper does not deal with the remedy or solution to these problems, except by way of illustration. The paper will concentrate upon the problems themselves so that the preacher may become aware of the variables in communication and take them …

In Perils In The Pulpit, Rudolph Norden Jun 1954

In Perils In The Pulpit, Rudolph Norden

Concordia Theological Monthly

Offhand, a person would consider the pulpit one of the safest places on earth. The sanctuary audience seated around this listening post is well behaved and for the most part friendly to the pulpit's occupant. No projectiles indicating forceful disapproval will be hurled. In this respect there is a difference between the church and the public forum. In the latter controversial questions in politics or labor relations are often discussed more in the heat than the light of intense feeling. Emotion, more frequently than thought, becomes father to ill-advised deeds, such as giving flight to overripe vegetables, empty beverage bottles, …
