Form-Function Relationships In The Development Of Lds Church Architecture, Ebbie Lavar Davis Jan 1970

Form-Function Relationships In The Development Of Lds Church Architecture, Ebbie Lavar Davis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the functions: ordinances, meetings, programs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the development of the physical plant. Inversely, the effect of Church house forms on the development of Church function was investigated. It was found that:
1. In Latter-day Saint Church development, form has always followed function.
2. Function has influenced form to a great extent. Priesthood, meeting, or other program needs are a prime factor in changing the form and design of Church buildings.
3. Form has influenced function only insofar as the physical …

Theological Existentialism, Ronnie Ford, Randy Maxwell, Allen Hampton, Roger Schoeniger, Monte Hollowell Jan 1970

Theological Existentialism, Ronnie Ford, Randy Maxwell, Allen Hampton, Roger Schoeniger, Monte Hollowell

Honors Theses

The Philosophy and Religion Honors Seminar has studied various theological existentialists this semester, and in order to contrast the views of atheistic existentialists, the views of an atheistic philosopher has been presented. The method of presenting the ideas is to find the actual objective facts of human existence, then to find the bases of hope in the human life, and finally to find the existential category that results from the hope that is generated. Sartre is the atheistic philosopher presented, and he finds all the details of life, then he sees these as meaningless, and finally life is presented as …

A Discriminative Study Of How Hymns Should Relate To The Present Age, Shelby Earl Cowling Jan 1970

A Discriminative Study Of How Hymns Should Relate To The Present Age, Shelby Earl Cowling

Honors Theses

Today, when the church and church music no longer dictate the cultural development of music as it once did long ago, and when composers use on of the three basic elements of music as the basis for their compositions thus offering many different types of styles of music, church music finds itself in a state of confusion. It culturally lags behind that of secular music and quite often gets trapped when trying to decide on which style to adopt today. It does not attract as it once did the composers of its century to compose music for the church, it …

A Study Of Factors Related To Becoming A Prophet As Set Forth In The New Testament, Clyde W. Coleman Jan 1970

A Study Of Factors Related To Becoming A Prophet As Set Forth In The New Testament, Clyde W. Coleman

OBU Graduate Theses

The New Testament reveals that the cause of Christ was served by many individuals during the first century A.D. The kind of work they did varied (Acts 6:1-4; I Corinthians 12:8-10, 28; Ephesians 4:11). Their personalities and abilities varied. They served in different localities and under different conditions. One kind of work . which many of them did that appeared to be more significant than the other kinds of work done was that of the prophet, the preacher or proclaimer. Christians who served in this capacity appeared to have been compelled or motivated to such service by a compelling influence …

Ethics And Modernization : A Preliminary Study On The Quality Of Human Life, Stanley Wilson Croker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The basic problem examined in this thesis has two focii - social ethics and modernization. Is there a relationship between social ethics and modernization? If so, what is the nature of this relationship and what is the effect of this relationship in practice? In examining these questions, two things have been attempted: (1) a preliminary and selective examination of current literature on modernization in order to come to a better understanding of what the concept means, of the problem areas that need clarification, and of how values affect the process of modernization, both implicitly and explicitly; and (2) and examination …

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn Jan 1970

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn

All Master's Theses

From the desolation of a sterile Waste Land populated by straw men, Eliot's dramas increasingly portray a world of great meaning and hope. His early dramas portray a hostile and insensible world which must be fought and completely rejected by religious persons who are called to martyrdom and sainthood. Eliot's acceptance of the material world and comfort with its society brings a steady transformation of his spiritual vision when at the end of his dramas the world is one of common people who strive to find meaning and "make the best of a bad job," illumined by a vision of …

The Priesthood Of Melchizedek, Monte Hollowell Jan 1970

The Priesthood Of Melchizedek, Monte Hollowell

Honors Theses

The priesthood of Melchizedek is a mystery to people who study the Bible very deeply. This is largely due to the mystery about man, Melchizedek. We have reference to him in three places in the Bible. In Genesis we first meet the man when he comes to meet Abram after his slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him. The king of Sodom came to meet Abram to express his gratitude to Abram for delivering his kingdom from these power hungry kings. He was expected, but it also says "and Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and …

Honors Theses

In the world today there are approximately three billion people who belong to 11 major religions. Nearly all belong to the religion and denomination into which they were born, and accept it naturally, and are loyal to it as they are loyal to their nationality.

Religion so exists for many men. "They have been born into a culture, and it is unthinkable that religion can be anything but part of their being."

As far as can be determined, religion has existed in every society. The more we learn about the days of man on earth, the more evidence there is …

Some Disparities Between The Mackay Report On “Religion In The Schools” And The Conerns Of Today’S Youth, John Mcmurray

In March 1969, the Mackay Committee published its Report on Religious Information and Moral Development. This Report was the result of a three-year study by the Mackay Committee on the state of religious education in the public schools of Ontario. Its purpose was to recommend a “program” of religious information and moral development which would meet the needs of youth in a pluralistic school system as they seek to live responsible lives in today’s world.

This thesis contends that there are some disparities between the Mackay Report and the concerns of youth today. Its particular stance has been shaped …
