Using Structural Equation Modeling To Predict Orofacial Pain-Related Outcomes, Marcia Vanessa Rojas-Ramirez Jan 2017

Using Structural Equation Modeling To Predict Orofacial Pain-Related Outcomes, Marcia Vanessa Rojas-Ramirez

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Objectives: To test if the structure of a proposed theoretical model comprised of specific observed variables clustered to measure three latent variables of anxiety, depression, and fatigue exhibited good global fit with the observed data and had adequate reliability using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A secondary objective was to use structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the direct effect of the latent variables of depression, anxiety, and fatigue on orofacial pain outcomes.

Methods: Subjects were evaluated and treated at an orofacial pain clinic between 2009 and 2014. Those who completed a battery of psychosocial and pain-related questionnaires were …

Risk Factors For Self Reported Health Status In The National Health Interview Survey, Kayla Rhea Talbott Jan 2017

Risk Factors For Self Reported Health Status In The National Health Interview Survey, Kayla Rhea Talbott

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Purpose: The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of how individuals view and analyze their health by evaluating the relationship between self-reported health (SRH) status and several variables representing health and lifestyle characteristics. Assessing the ability of self-reported health status to measure overall health was an additional objective of the study.

Methods: A secondary, cross-sectional study was conducted using information from the 2014 National Health Interview Survey for adults 18 and older. Data were stratified and compared based on a self-rated health status of either excellent or very good, good, or fair and poor, …

An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Unannounced Safety Inspections Versus Announced Inspections In Academic Research Laboratories That Utilize Biological Hazards, Holley M. Trucks Jan 2017

An Assessment Of The Effectiveness Of Unannounced Safety Inspections Versus Announced Inspections In Academic Research Laboratories That Utilize Biological Hazards, Holley M. Trucks

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Inspections are integral to comprehensive biosafety programs at academic research institutions that use a wide variety of infectious agents. However, there is no standardization of biosafety inspection procedures from institution to institution. This study analyzed results of 2,098 documented inspections conducted from January 2012 through December of 2016 performed by biosafety staff at a large Research I land grant institution in order to evaluate the effectiveness of an unannounced versus the more traditional announced approach to inspection procedure. Results demonstrated that: a) more findings were noted during unannounced inspections, therefore more accurately informing biosafety staff of the true day to …

Use Of Clonidine In Sedation Dentistry, Asma Kumar Jan 2017

Use Of Clonidine In Sedation Dentistry, Asma Kumar

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Background:

Clonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist which has been used to treat hypertension for over 40 years. In October 2008, clonidine was approved by the FDA for use as a premedication agent prior to sedation. The overall goal of this study is to determine if clonidine can be used as a pre- operative sedative agent in moderate sedation dentistry and if so, what should be considered a safe level.

The following specific aims were established for this study:

  1. To determine whether patients receiving clonidine required less intravenous medications.
  2. To determine if clonidine can lower blood pressure and pulse to …

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Childhood Retinoblastoma And Cns Tumors In Kentucky, From 1995 Through 2014, Jennifer A. Khoury Jan 2017

Spatio-Temporal Analysis Of Childhood Retinoblastoma And Cns Tumors In Kentucky, From 1995 Through 2014, Jennifer A. Khoury

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Objectives

Childhood cancer poses a significant public health burden, both globally and in the United States (US). The most common childhood cancers affect the brain and central nervous system (CNS). Age-adjusted childhood brain tumor (CBT) incidence rates in Kentucky are larger than in the rest of the US; these rates are also higher in Appalachian Kentucky than in the rest of the state. This study determined if high-rate clusters of either CNS tumor or retinoblastoma existed in Kentucky.

Methods

Data for this study were retrieved from the Kentucky Cancer Registry for the years 1995 through 2014. Cases were individuals between …

Evaluation Of Pyriproxyfen Applied In Barrier Sprays For Mosquito Suppression, Andrea Glenn Skiles Jan 2017

Evaluation Of Pyriproxyfen Applied In Barrier Sprays For Mosquito Suppression, Andrea Glenn Skiles

Theses and Dissertations--Entomology

Despite advances in mosquito management, mosquito-borne disease in the United States is still of relevant public health concern and vector control is a top priority in preventing transmission of pathogens. Insecticide barrier sprays have become a common tool for suppression of mosquitoes in single-homeowner backyards. The application of the synthetic pyrethroid, lambda-cyhalothrin to perimeter vegetation with a backpack sprayer has been shown to significantly suppress mosquito levels for around 6 weeks. In an attempt to lengthen the effective duration of treatment, the IGR, pyriproxyfen, was added to a backpack mist blower with lambda-cyhalothrin, as adult mosquitoes exposed to pyriproxyfen have …

Understanding And Promoting Parent-Child Sexual Health Communication, Shannon Phelps

Theses and Dissertations--Education Sciences

Parent-child sexual health communication (PCSHC) can have a positive impact on adolescents’ sexual health choices, outcomes, and capabilities for communicating with others about sexual health. Many parents are hesitant and feel unprepared for and uncomfortable with communicating about sexual health with their children. Other parental factors as well as child factors can impact the quality, frequency, coverage, and effectiveness of PCSHC. Some adolescent sexual health outcomes have improved, however, teen birth rates in the United States are elevated compared to other developed countries and half of all sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses are made to adolescents and emerging adults. This …
