Egypt has been and continues to be one of the major recipients of development assistance in the third world, yet very little effort has been made to assess the overall impact of this aid on Egypt A symposium was held on December 10th and 11th, 1983 in Oriental Hall at the American University in Cairo, organized by Cairo Papers in Social Science with financial support from the Cairo Office of the Ford Foundation. Egyptian government ministers, officials from representative donors and scholars experienced in development were invited to make formal presentations to the symposium. This collection consists of papers of Bette B. Anderson from 1977-1981. The papers include general correspondence from the public or friends, chronological files (1977-1978) containing copies of Anderson's outgoing correspondence as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, appointment books (1977-1980), photographs, clippings, and speeches (1977-1980) given by Anderson to various clubs and organizations or as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. The materials document Anderson's duties in the Treasury Department during President Carter's administration and her interest in finance and banking.

Political protest and nonviolent struggle have had a long history in the United States, dating back to colonial times. During the nineteenth century, nonviolence was associated with such causes as abolition, temperance, antimilitarism, and women's suffrage. More recently, the nonviolent tactics and strategies used in the civil rights and antiwar movements of the 1950s and 1960s spawned similar activity on a diverse array of issues, including urban poverty, Native American rights, welfare reform, homosexuality, women's rights, and environmental pollution.
