Narcissism, Self-Esteem, Self-Worth As Predictors Of Aggression, Grisel M. Garcia Aug 2009

Narcissism, Self-Esteem, Self-Worth As Predictors Of Aggression, Grisel M. Garcia

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Previous research has shown a relationship between narcissism and aggression, and between narcissism and self-esteem. Indeed, aspects of narcissism predict both adjusted and maladjusted forms of functioning. Therefore, narcissism appears to be both adaptive and maladaptive. In the present study, maladjusted narcissism was directly correlated with aggression, while self-esteem was inversely correlated with aggression. Another objective of this research was to relate narcissism and aggression with contingencies of self-worth. Contingencies of self-worth consisted of two relational contingencies: internal and external. Most of the external contingencies of self-worth were related to aggression, lower self-esteem, and maladaptive narcissism. In contrast internal contingencies …

Driving Anger, Sensation Seeking, Narcissism, And Driver's Angry Thoughts In The Prediction Of Unsafe Driving, Roy Preston White May 2009

Driving Anger, Sensation Seeking, Narcissism, And Driver's Angry Thoughts In The Prediction Of Unsafe Driving, Roy Preston White

Dissertations

The present study expanded the previous research on multivariate prediction of unsafe driving behaviors. Specifically, the utility of combining driving anger, sensation seeking, narcissism, and driver's angry thoughts variables in the prediction of various unsafe driving behaviors and driving anger expression were assessed. In addition the present study sought to explore the predictive utility of driving anger and sensation seeking in a non-college sample. Three hundred and forty-nine college students completed measures of driving anger, sensation seeking, narcissism, driver's angry thoughts, unsafe driving behavior, and driving anger expression. Ninety eight non-college participants completed a subset of the previously mentioned measures. …

An Investigation Of Sexual Narcissism As A Predictor Of Sexual Assault, Rachel Johnson May 2009

An Investigation Of Sexual Narcissism As A Predictor Of Sexual Assault, Rachel Johnson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

While narcissism has been linked to aggression, studies directly examining the relationship of narcissism with sexual aggression have yielded inconsistent results. This is likely due to the global measures of narcissism used. These measures are not sensitive to whether the components of narcissism are activated in sexual versus non-sexual domains. This study examined sexual narcissism as a predictor of rape myth acceptance, which has been consistently related to sexual aggression. In addition, the researcher attempted to show that sexual narcissism is a unique predictor of sexual aggression. This was done in three phases. Phase 1 demonstrated that sexual narcissism is …

Preliminary Study Of The Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire, Ethan H. Motter Jan 2009

Preliminary Study Of The Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire, Ethan H. Motter

ETD Archive

This study was designed to create a new measure for narcissism. Furthermore, the NPQ will be based on the 9 DSM-IV-TR criteria for narcissism. The NPQ will be compared to the NPI with is a more established instrument of narcissism. The study examined 124 students from a certain midwestern university in north east Ohio. Results indicate that the NPQ has a higher reliability than the NPI. Additionally, the NPQ displays a high construct validity due the high correlations between the NPQ and the NPI. However, future studies should attempt to replicate the results as well as measure divergent validity in …

Self-Esteem, Self-Compassion, Defensive Self-Esteem, And Related Features Of Narcissism As Predictors Of Aggression, Cara Pharr Gottheim Jan 2009

Self-Esteem, Self-Compassion, Defensive Self-Esteem, And Related Features Of Narcissism As Predictors Of Aggression, Cara Pharr Gottheim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This study sought to expand upon existing literature pertaining to feelings toward oneself and aggressive behavior. Specifically, global self-esteem, as well as two specific subsets of self-esteem, defensive self-esteem and narcissistic self-esteem, were examined as predictors of aggressive behavior. Additionally, the relationship between aggression and self-compassion, a recently introduced self-construct moderately correlated with self-esteem, was investigated. College students from a large Northeastern University were invited via email or through a brief classroom presentation to participate in this online study. A total of 181 students completed five surveys that were useable for data analyses: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES; Rosenberg, 1989), Self-compassion …

Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale: Implications For The Distinction Of Covert And Overt Narcissism, Eamonn Patrick Arble Jan 2008

Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale: Implications For The Distinction Of Covert And Overt Narcissism, Eamonn Patrick Arble

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Recent research has suggested that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) may have mistakenly focused on the overt qualities of the narcissistic personality disorder (e.g. demand for admiration) while neglecting the disorder’s more covert features (Russ, Shedler, Bradley, & Westen, 2008). An investigation into the psychometric properties of a measure of this more covert form of narcissism, Hendin and Cheek’s (1997) Hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSNS), represents the focus of the present study. A total of 298 participants completed the measure, as well as measures assessing related constructs. The HSNS …
