Reconnecting The Mind And Body: Using Bodywork To Help Improve Mental Health, Floribeth Rivera Sep 2016

Reconnecting The Mind And Body: Using Bodywork To Help Improve Mental Health, Floribeth Rivera

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The connection between mind and body has been a topic of study since the beginning of medicine. In Eastern medicine, there has been an integration of the two; however in Western medicine, the paring of the mind and body is becoming a new mainstream form of treatment. This literature review considers four different types of bodywork, which include massage therapy, CranioSacral therapy, acupuncture and Reiki, that can be used to help in the treatment of mental illnesses. Research shows that using these types of bodywork in combination with psychotherapy can be beneficial to patients who experience depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, …

Interleukin-6, Depression, And Religious Coping In Older Seventh-Day Adventists, Palak Dipak Kothari Sep 2016

Interleukin-6, Depression, And Religious Coping In Older Seventh-Day Adventists, Palak Dipak Kothari

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Prior research suggests that depression and chronic inflammation have a bidirectional relationship. This study examined how depressive symptoms and the inflammatory marker, interleukin-6 (IL-6), interact over time in 287 older adults (54% female, 63% White, Mage = 66, SDage = 10.9) from the Biopsychosocial Religion and Health Study and whether religious coping moderated this relationship. Depressive symptoms and IL-6 were assessed in 2006-7 and 2010-11. Results of the hierarchical multiple regressions indicate that initial depressive symptoms predicted IL-6 three to five years later, and that this relationship was moderated by positive religious coping. Moreover, negative religious coping predicted depressive symptoms …

Relationship Between Crime, Psychological Diagnosis And Cognitive Functioning, Kayla M. Kinworthy Sep 2016

Relationship Between Crime, Psychological Diagnosis And Cognitive Functioning, Kayla M. Kinworthy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Within various forensic state hospitals, neuropsychological testing is used to improve patient management through treatment and release planning because cognitive impairment and a diagnosis of Schizophrenia have direct implications on chance of release from a state hospital and risk of future violence. To understand the seeming inter-workings of the variables of cognitive functioning, mental health diagnosis, and violence, this study sought to test how various demographic, developmental, mental health, and cognitive factors impact a patient's crime committed and the presence of violence during the commission of the crime, as well as testing the direct relationships between these variables. Results from …

Effects Of Stress, Sex Differences, And Cognitive Reserve On Cognitive Decline In Healthy Elderly Subjects, Courtney Ray Sep 2016

Effects Of Stress, Sex Differences, And Cognitive Reserve On Cognitive Decline In Healthy Elderly Subjects, Courtney Ray

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Extensive research has been conducted linking stress to increased allostatic load and degradation of various organs over time. In the brain, the hippocampus appears to be particularly vulnerable. This deterioration is manifest clinically by impaired performance on tasks of declarative memory. The Social Readjustment Ratings Scale (SRRS) is an inventory of high intensity psychosocial stressors. This instrument has previously been used to help calculate risk of disease. Using measurements of stressful life events, it may be possible to similarly predict risk of cognitive impairment. To test this, the current study explored the cumulative effect of discreet psychosocial stressors that have …

Survive Or Thrive: Focusing On The Forest (Global) Or The Trees (Local) Impacts Meaning Making, Seda Terzyan Sep 2016

Survive Or Thrive: Focusing On The Forest (Global) Or The Trees (Local) Impacts Meaning Making, Seda Terzyan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Focusing on the forest versus the trees illustrates a fundamental difference in how people see the world and make meaning, termed global and local attention. How we shift between them may impact whether we experience happiness or anxiety. We explored how different emotions serve as triggers for shifting between global and local attention using film clips and measuring responses to computerized attention tasks. We found that negative film clips localized attention, while positive films globalized attention, concluding that emotions can impact whether we attend to the forest or the trees. However, different induction strategies and various studies have led to …

Hypertension In Older African Americans: Testing Psychosocial Mediators, Taylor L. Draper Sep 2016

Hypertension In Older African Americans: Testing Psychosocial Mediators, Taylor L. Draper

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Past research has shown that low socioeconomic status (SES) and experiencing racial discrimination are both related to hypertension in African Americans. Further, low SES and racial discrimination have been found to affect hypertension indirectly through stress, low levels of psychosocial resources, and lifestyle risk factors in African American adults. Past studies have used the Reserve Capacity Model (RCM; Gallo & Matthews, 2003; 2005) to understand these relationships. The RCM asserts that stress can be mitigated by psychosocial resources (mastery, optimism, self-esteem) which lead to healthy lifestyle behaviors predictive of cardiac health. However, there are few studies that use the RCM …

The Effects Of Appearance Schemas And Commentary On Body Image And Eating Disorder Psychopathology, Alyson C. Hermé Sep 2016

The Effects Of Appearance Schemas And Commentary On Body Image And Eating Disorder Psychopathology, Alyson C. Hermé

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The current study examined whether appearance investment, as well as, frequency and effect of appearance-related commentary predicted overall appearance satisfaction, body satisfaction, and eating disorder psychopathology. Appearance schemas and frequency and effect of both negative and positive shape and weight commentary were shown to be significant predictors of appearance satisfaction. Appearance schemas and effect of negative shape and weight commentary was significantly predictive of body satisfaction and eating disorder psychopathology. The study also examined differences in appearance investment levels among BMI groups, individuals who were overweight and obese had higher appearance investment than their normal weight peers. Future research should …

Lung Cancer Stigma: Associated Variables And Coping Strategies, Kevin R. Criswell Sep 2016

Lung Cancer Stigma: Associated Variables And Coping Strategies, Kevin R. Criswell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Lung cancer stigma is a burgeoning area of literature, yet two important questions remain unanswered: a) What are the associations between lung cancer stigma and psychosocial outcomes across lung cancer survivors with different smoking histories and b) how would lung cancer survivors describe their experience of coping strategies they utilize to cope with lung cancer stigma. This dissertation presents two studies that seek to answer the above-mentioned questions: a) a quantitative study that describes the rates of Personal Responsibility, Regret, and Medical Stigma and the associations between the above-mentioned constructs and psychosocial outcomes; and b) a qualitative study of coping …

Neuropsychological Effects Of Pomegranate Supplementation Following Ischemic Stroke, John A. Bellone Sep 2016

Neuropsychological Effects Of Pomegranate Supplementation Following Ischemic Stroke, John A. Bellone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Polyphenols are compounds found in fruits and vegetables that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Mounting evidence suggests that dietary polyphenol intake can reduce the detrimental effects of various disease processes, and pomegranates have frequently been examined because of their particularly high polyphenol content. Since stroke induces both oxidative stress and inflammation and is currently the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S., we sought to determine whether dietary supplementation with polyphenols could enhance cognitive recovery in individuals who had suffered an ischemic stroke. We administered polyphenols via 2 POMx pills containing polyphenols derived from pomegranates equivalent to the content …

The Adolescent Smoking Prevention Project: A Web-Based Smoking Prevention For Adolescents, Whitney N. Brown Sep 2016

The Adolescent Smoking Prevention Project: A Web-Based Smoking Prevention For Adolescents, Whitney N. Brown

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 2014 2.5% of middle school students and 9.2% of high school students reported smoking cigarettes in the past 30 days (CDC, 2014). However, there is currently a lack of evidence-based programs targeting prevention of adolescent smoking. The current study evaluated the effectiveness of a novel web-based adolescent smoking prevention program, the Adolescent Smoking Prevention Project (ASPP), based on the sensitization-homeostasis theory of nicotine dependence and developed by the study investigators. A sample of 54 adolescents (aged 12-15) were recruited from public schools in Southern California. Of these adolescents 26 were randomly assigned to the ASPP program and 28 were …

Appearance-Related Commentary And Body Image In Women, Christina P. Moldovan Sep 2016

Appearance-Related Commentary And Body Image In Women, Christina P. Moldovan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research has shown that sociocultural factors such as interpersonal appearance-related commentary influence body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. Few studies have investigated the effects of appearance-related commentary among undergraduate women of different ethnic groups. The aims of the current study were to examine: (1) ethnic differences in body dissatisfaction, eating disorder psychopathology, sociocultural attitudes towards appearance, appearance-related commentary, and acculturation to Western culture in African-, European-, and Hispanic Americans; and (2) negative appearance-related commentary and acculturation to Western culture as moderators of the relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating disorder psychopathology. Participants included 345 undergraduate women (Mage = 19.17, SD = …

Predictors Of Adolescent E-Cigarette Use, Denise Dao Tran Sep 2016

Predictors Of Adolescent E-Cigarette Use, Denise Dao Tran

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

E-cigarette use among adolescents in the U.S. has recently tripled. Studies suggest that e-cigarettes may be as addictive as conventional cigarettes, and that adolescents may be at particular risk for nicotine addiction, as well as for the neurological, developmental, and behavioral problems caused by nicotine use. The objective of the present study was to identify potential risk factors for adolescent e-cigarette use, particularly those related to conventional cigarette smoking. Respondents (N = 177; Mean age = 13.23 years; SDage = 0.90; 60.00% female) were recruited from one public middle school and one public high school in Southern California, and completed …

Heart-Focused Anxiety And Cardiac Treatment Adherence, Angelyna M. Lowe Sep 2016

Heart-Focused Anxiety And Cardiac Treatment Adherence, Angelyna M. Lowe

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death and functional impairment in North America. Treatment adherence in general is a major obstacle for the cardiac population. Anxiety is a potential barrier to treatment adherence, yet results of previous studies are equivocal, possibly due to anxiety being measured too generally. Heart-focused anxiety was measured in the current study to determine if it is a better predictor of treatment adherence than general anxiety, after controlling for other known predictors of adherence. Sixty-five participants between 29 and 96 years of age (M = 69.24, SD = 14.18; 56.9% female) were recruited from the …

An Examination Of Social Media And The Tripartite Influence Model Of Body Image Disturbance, Amanda F. Suplee Sep 2016

An Examination Of Social Media And The Tripartite Influence Model Of Body Image Disturbance, Amanda F. Suplee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Tripartite Influence Model of body image disturbance demonstrates that parents, peers, and media play a role in the development of body image dissatisfaction and eating disorder psychopathology. Research suggests that parents, peers, and media play direct roles on the development of body dissatisfaction and eating disorder psychopathology in females as well as indirect roles through mediated relationships with appearance comparisons and thin ideal internalization. A form of media gaining recent attention is social media. Although there is limited research on social media and body image, studies suggest that use of social media is related to body dissatisfaction and eating …

Literature Review Of Drug Education Programs, Brianna E. Johnson Jun 2016

Literature Review Of Drug Education Programs, Brianna E. Johnson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The onset of drug use usually begins during adolescence. Adolescents and teenagers have the highest rates of drug use (Center for Disease Control [CDC], 2011a). Among 9th through 12th graders, drug use increases with each year in school, with rates being the highest for 12th graders (Stigler, Neusel, & Perry, 2011). While overall rates of drug use have been declining, the current rates of drug use among teens are still of concern. The current rates of drug use emphasize how important it is for drug education programs as well as prevention efforts to be began early on. The current drug …

The Effects Of Mild Concussions And Pomegranates On Behavior, Nikita M. Bajwa Jun 2016

The Effects Of Mild Concussions And Pomegranates On Behavior, Nikita M. Bajwa

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The neuropathological effects of mild concussions can accumulate, leading to the development of motor and cognitive deficits. Although there are currently no treatments that can restore lost function after repetitive concussion, our laboratory has shown that dietary supplementation with pomegranate polyphenols can improve Alzheimer’s-like pathology, protect mice from the effects of proton irradiation, and protect humans from post-operative cognitive deficits. This study investigated the behavioral and neuropathological effects of repetitive concussions in mice and the use of dietary supplementation with pomegranate to ameliorate these effects. Adult mice were given dilute pomegranate juice or control water for 1 week, followed by …

Multi-Level Model Of Parent-Child Attachment, Depression & Self-Concept In Pediatric Chronic Illness, Natacha Donoghue Emerson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Pediatric patients may be at higher risk for depression and a lower self-concept when difficulties within the family arise. The Mastering Each New Direction (MEND) program is a psychosocial intervention aimed at addressing adherence and family issues in adolescent CI. Methods: Drawing data from 50 MEND participants, we used multilevel modeling techniques to test changes in self-concept over time as predicted by number of weeks in MEND, depression, family cohesion and flexibility, and baseline levels of maternal and paternal attachment. Results: At Level 1, depression negatively predicted self-concept over time. At Level 2, higher baseline maternal and paternal avoidant …

Intimate Partner Violence In A Conservative Christian Denomination: Prevalence And Risk Factors, Carolyn Sallion-Love Jun 2016

Intimate Partner Violence In A Conservative Christian Denomination: Prevalence And Risk Factors, Carolyn Sallion-Love

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examines the prevalence and risk factors of intimate partner violence (IPV) in a Christian denomination. To date, no studies have been found in the literature that looked at IPV in a Christian denomination in South America, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Little is known regarding how church members from these countries experience victimization from IPV. One 2002 Inter-American Division (IAD) data set provides some insight into IPV; and the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has analyzed cross-sectional data of more than 7,000 SDA respondents from the study area of interest. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) was used to determine if …

Developmental Pedagogy In Marriage And Family Therapy Education, Christopher Russell Hoff Jun 2016

Developmental Pedagogy In Marriage And Family Therapy Education, Christopher Russell Hoff

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

New practice domains are opening up for practitioners of family therapy in the medical, organizational, and human relations fields. In this new environment, family therapy educators and supervisors are required to cross the epistemological spaces of scientist-practitioner, postmodernism, and critical theory. These new possibilities require that family therapist educators become comfortable moving between multiple epistemologies. This poses increasing challenges that will require a hybridization of knowledge and practice approaches in MFT education. Through focus groups consisting of 34 participants, all of who were in their first quarter of a Master’s degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy. We found a …

Phenotyping Double Transgenic Mouse Models Of Alzheimer’S That Express Human App And Apoe3 Or Apoe4, Shina Halavi Jun 2016

Phenotyping Double Transgenic Mouse Models Of Alzheimer’S That Express Human App And Apoe3 Or Apoe4, Shina Halavi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes progressive cognitive and behavioral problems resulting from a build-up of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques in the brain. The degree of neuropathology is partially related to apolipoprotein E (apoE), a fat-binding protein involved in transporting cholesterol to neurons. The APOE gene, which codes for the production of apoE, has several alleles in humans, including APOE3 (E3; the most common) and APOE4 (E4; which is associated with a high risk for developing AD). Transgenic mouse models of AD are commonly used to study the neuropathological processes behind the development of Aβ plaques, neurodegeneration, and …

Emotional Memory: Examining Differences In Retrieval Methods, Audrey Martinez Jun 2016

Emotional Memory: Examining Differences In Retrieval Methods, Audrey Martinez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Emotional information is generally remembered better than non-emotional information, especially when the emotional information is highly arousing. Priority Binding Theory has grown out of several years worth of research on memory and emotion. The theory proposes that in mixed lists comprised of negative and arousing words and neutral words, negative and arousing words will take priority during mental processing resulting in stronger encoding for the emotional words relative to neutral words with no such effect predicted for pure lists. Our lab made several attempts to extend the theory to picture stimuli, but were unsuccessful. However, the predictions of Priority Binding …

The Frontal-Temporal Signature Of Tbi-Induced Acute Cerebral Metabolic Crisis, Christina Mannino Jun 2016

The Frontal-Temporal Signature Of Tbi-Induced Acute Cerebral Metabolic Crisis, Christina Mannino

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) often leads to acute cerebral metabolic crisis (ACMC), which appears to have the greatest impact on the frontal-temporal regions. A recent study demonstrated that atrophy in the frontal and temporal lobes related to acute metabolic crisis due to moderate or severe TBI was associated with poorer attention, executive functioning, and psychomotor abilities at 12 months post-injury. In addition, participants with greater frontal-temporal atrophy had T-scores on all of the standard tests that were in the deficit range indicating deficits in cognition. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the ability of direct measures of …

General Fatalism And Diabetes Fatalism As Predictors Of Diabetes Treatment Adherence, Esmeralda Ibette Nuñez Jun 2016

General Fatalism And Diabetes Fatalism As Predictors Of Diabetes Treatment Adherence, Esmeralda Ibette Nuñez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Greater conceptual distinction between fatalism as a cultural value orientation (general fatalism) and disease-specific fatalism is necessary to evaluate fatalism as a predictor of health behaviors such as diabetes treatment adherence. We tested an integrated, theory-driven structural model of relationships among income, education, age, gender, general fatalism, diabetes fatalism, and type 2 diabetes treatment adherence, as measured by hemoglobin a1c levels (hba1c), in a sample of mainstream-Chileans (n=229) and indigenous people of Chile known as the Mapuche (n=134). Hypotheses were that higher income and education would predict more general fatalism and diabetes fatalism across ethnic groups and higher general fatalism …

Interacting Beliefs And Processes In Mothers Of Children Diagnosed With Autism, Lara L. South Jun 2016

Interacting Beliefs And Processes In Mothers Of Children Diagnosed With Autism, Lara L. South

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to expand previous research regarding beliefs in mothers of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (MCDAs). Specifically, the pilot to this dissertation showed that mothers believed that the disorder was more stable than any specific behavior, but this distinction was not found for beliefs about treatment being able to control the disorder versus behaviors. Consequently, the quantitative strand of this study aimed to determine whether the mothers’ beliefs about locus of control interacted with beliefs about treatment control. It was hypothesized that mothers with a higher belief in personal locus of control (LOC) compared …

The Influence Of Parental Mental Health On Child Outcomes: The Role Of The Parenting Process, Meredith L. Dennis Mar 2016

The Influence Of Parental Mental Health On Child Outcomes: The Role Of The Parenting Process, Meredith L. Dennis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Parents of children affected by developmental delays (DD) have been shown to experience elevated levels of parenting stress compared to parents of typically developing children. Recent studies suggest that higher levels of parenting stress can adversely impact child behavior and development, such that higher levels of parenting stress are often associated with higher levels of behavior problems and negative developmental outcomes. However the specific mechanisms through which parenting stress influences child outcomes remain unclear. The overall parenting process may be one potential medium through which parenting stress influences both child behavioral and developmental outcomes. The current study involved both qualitative …

Nicu Parental Mental Health And Infant Outcomes: Effects Of Psychological Well-Being And Psychopathology, Kathleen H. Parker Mar 2016

Nicu Parental Mental Health And Infant Outcomes: Effects Of Psychological Well-Being And Psychopathology, Kathleen H. Parker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous research has shown that having a child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is stressful for parents and that parents of NICU infants exhibit higher levels of stress compared to parents of healthy infants (Carter, Mulder, & Darlow, 2007; MacDonald, 2007; Treyvaud et al., 2010). As a result of these high levels of stress, NICU parents are at risk for developing psychopathology. Studies have found correlations between parental psychopathology and lower scores on measures of psychological well-being such as self-acceptance and autonomy (Bhullar, Hine, & Phillips, 2014; Valiente et al., 2013). Additionally, research has indicated that some well-being …
