Cyclically-Forced Hyperpycnites Of The Ancient Colorado River Proximal Prodelta, Sandra R. Waresak
Cyclically-Forced Hyperpycnites Of The Ancient Colorado River Proximal Prodelta, Sandra R. Waresak
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Prodeltaic deposits record a distal, minimally reworked archive of dominant processes active at the fluvial-marine interface. The Fish Creek-Vallecito Basin (CA, US) preserves an ~3 km-thick, lower Pliocene, progradational deltaic succession formed when the ancestral Colorado River infiltrated the early Gulf of California. The interpreted prodeltaic unit in this succession (Mud Hills Member of the Deguynos Formation) contains an ~40 m-thick interval of rhythmic bedding with consistently alternating silt- to fine sand-dominated and clay-dominated beds forming couplets with an average thickness of 12 cm. Sedimentological analysis of the rhythmites reveals the couplets are laterally persistent with gradational to sharp, flat …

Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans
Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
High-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are the causative agents of nearly all cases of cervical cancer, as well as a significant number of head, neck, penile, vulvar and anal cancers. Like many other viruses with small genomes, HPV (~8 kb) utilizes numerous mechanisms to increase the capacity of its genome to encode the proteins necessary for successful completion of its infectious life cycle, including alternative splicing. Studies over the past few decades have focused intensively on the activities and roles of E6 proteins from HR-HPVs during the process of cellular transformation, clearly implicating E6 as a major transforming …
Neuroprotective Molecules And Strategies In A Rat Model Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Brandon Joseph Dixon
Neuroprotective Molecules And Strategies In A Rat Model Of Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Brandon Joseph Dixon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a devastating disease that primarily causes neuronal and white matter injury and is among the leading cause of death among infants. Currently there are no well-established treatments; thus, it is important to understand the pathophysiology of the disease and elucidate complications that are creating a gap between basic science and clinical translation. In the development of neuroprotective strategies and translation of experimental results in HIE, there are many limitations and challenges to master based on an appropriate study design, drug delivery properties, dosage, and use in neonates. Since there are no established therapies for …

Depositional Model Of A Late Cretaceous Dinosaur Fossil Concentration, Lance Formation, Summer Rose Weeks
Depositional Model Of A Late Cretaceous Dinosaur Fossil Concentration, Lance Formation, Summer Rose Weeks
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A large Maastrichtian, nearly monospecific bonebed in the Lance Formation in eastern Wyoming has yielded 13,000 bones and fragments since 1996. Though excavation of the site continues, little is known of the circumstances and processes of deposition. This study aims to provide a depositional model for the bonebed. To accomplish this task we utilized 1D facies analysis of surrounding units and 3D analysis of the bonebed. The nature of the outcrop limited facies analysis to 1D. Four measured stratigraphic sections, each containing the bonebed unit, were taken and used in facies analysis. In addition, laterally continuous units were observed and …
Compositional Diversity In Arcs: A Record Of Magmatic Processes In The Peru Coastal Batholith, Ica, Ana Maria Martinez Ardila
Compositional Diversity In Arcs: A Record Of Magmatic Processes In The Peru Coastal Batholith, Ica, Ana Maria Martinez Ardila
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Peruvian granitic plutons display evidence for crustal recycling and magma mixing. Evidence of physical and chemical processes operating during the formation of the Ica-Pisco complexes involves magma mixing and mingling as result of felsic and mafic interactions. Evidence of crustal recycling was identified from kilometer-scale cauldron subsidence, meter and centimeter-scale -stoping, and disaggregation. At the petrographic microscope scale, evidence for recycling and mixing between mantle and crustal magma during crystallization is found from disequilibrium features such as reaction rims, resorbed cores, and patchy zoning. Elemental and isotope geochemistry data indicate that mantle magmas have incorporated continental crust material from varying …

Reconnecting The Mind And Body: Using Bodywork To Help Improve Mental Health, Floribeth Rivera
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The connection between mind and body has been a topic of study since the beginning of medicine. In Eastern medicine, there has been an integration of the two; however in Western medicine, the paring of the mind and body is becoming a new mainstream form of treatment. This literature review considers four different types of bodywork, which include massage therapy, CranioSacral therapy, acupuncture and Reiki, that can be used to help in the treatment of mental illnesses. Research shows that using these types of bodywork in combination with psychotherapy can be beneficial to patients who experience depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, …
Effects Of Stress, Sex Differences, And Cognitive Reserve On Cognitive Decline In Healthy Elderly Subjects, Courtney Ray
Effects Of Stress, Sex Differences, And Cognitive Reserve On Cognitive Decline In Healthy Elderly Subjects, Courtney Ray
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Extensive research has been conducted linking stress to increased allostatic load and degradation of various organs over time. In the brain, the hippocampus appears to be particularly vulnerable. This deterioration is manifest clinically by impaired performance on tasks of declarative memory. The Social Readjustment Ratings Scale (SRRS) is an inventory of high intensity psychosocial stressors. This instrument has previously been used to help calculate risk of disease. Using measurements of stressful life events, it may be possible to similarly predict risk of cognitive impairment. To test this, the current study explored the cumulative effect of discreet psychosocial stressors that have …
Heart-Focused Anxiety And Cardiac Treatment Adherence, Angelyna M. Lowe
Heart-Focused Anxiety And Cardiac Treatment Adherence, Angelyna M. Lowe
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Cardiac disease is the leading cause of death and functional impairment in North America. Treatment adherence in general is a major obstacle for the cardiac population. Anxiety is a potential barrier to treatment adherence, yet results of previous studies are equivocal, possibly due to anxiety being measured too generally. Heart-focused anxiety was measured in the current study to determine if it is a better predictor of treatment adherence than general anxiety, after controlling for other known predictors of adherence. Sixty-five participants between 29 and 96 years of age (M = 69.24, SD = 14.18; 56.9% female) were recruited from the …
Interpreting Southern California Arc Geochemistry By Multivariate And Spatial Methods, Lance R. Pompe
Interpreting Southern California Arc Geochemistry By Multivariate And Spatial Methods, Lance R. Pompe
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Exploratory data analysis methods of multivariate statistical techniques and spatial visualization are emerging trends in understanding big datasets. In this project, these techniques are applied to a large igneous geochemical dataset from the southern California segment of the Mesozoic Cordilleran arc to better understand magmatic and plate tectonic processes at a subduction zone. A set of 287 granitic samples collected by Baird and Miesch (1984) from the Peninsular Ranges batholith is analyzed for 38 geochemical elements. Patterns in both the geochemical variation and the spatial variation of this dataset are explored. Since geochemical data are compositional in nature, special treatment …

Participants included 345 undergraduate women (Mage = 19.17, SD = …
Survive Or Thrive: Focusing On The Forest (Global) Or The Trees (Local) Impacts Meaning Making, Seda Terzyan
Survive Or Thrive: Focusing On The Forest (Global) Or The Trees (Local) Impacts Meaning Making, Seda Terzyan
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Focusing on the forest versus the trees illustrates a fundamental difference in how people see the world and make meaning, termed global and local attention. How we shift between them may impact whether we experience happiness or anxiety. We explored how different emotions serve as triggers for shifting between global and local attention using film clips and measuring responses to computerized attention tasks. We found that negative film clips localized attention, while positive films globalized attention, concluding that emotions can impact whether we attend to the forest or the trees. However, different induction strategies and various studies have led to …

Relational Engagement And Empowerment: Establishing A Foundation To Address Gender And Power, Sarah K. Samman
Relational Engagement And Empowerment: Establishing A Foundation To Address Gender And Power, Sarah K. Samman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Feminist informed therapists view relational distress as a complex reflection of the influences of larger disempowering discourses resulting in gendered power inequalities in heterosexual couple relationships. These disempowering discourses often manifest in males’ socialization to maintain autonomy compared to females’ socialization to orient toward the needs of others (Silverstein, Bass, Tuttle, Knudson-Martin, & Huenergardt, 2006). The general purpose of this study was to bridge the gap between feminist informed theory and practice using the Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT; Knudson-Martin & Huenergardt, 2010) Model to relieve relational distress in heterosexual intimate partners often caused by these competing discourses toward a relational …
An Examination Of Social Media And The Tripartite Influence Model Of Body Image Disturbance, Amanda F. Suplee
An Examination Of Social Media And The Tripartite Influence Model Of Body Image Disturbance, Amanda F. Suplee
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Tripartite Influence Model of body image disturbance demonstrates that parents, peers, and media play a role in the development of body image dissatisfaction and eating disorder psychopathology. Research suggests that parents, peers, and media play direct roles on the development of body dissatisfaction and eating disorder psychopathology in females as well as indirect roles through mediated relationships with appearance comparisons and thin ideal internalization. A form of media gaining recent attention is social media. Although there is limited research on social media and body image, studies suggest that use of social media is related to body dissatisfaction and eating …

Interleukin-6, Depression, And Religious Coping In Older Seventh-Day Adventists, Palak Dipak Kothari
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Prior research suggests that depression and chronic inflammation have a bidirectional relationship. This study examined how depressive symptoms and the inflammatory marker, interleukin-6 (IL-6), interact over time in 287 older adults (54% female, 63% White, Mage = 66, SDage = 10.9) from the Biopsychosocial Religion and Health Study and whether religious coping moderated this relationship. Depressive symptoms and IL-6 were assessed in 2006-7 and 2010-11. Results of the hierarchical multiple regressions indicate that initial depressive symptoms predicted IL-6 three to five years later, and that this relationship was moderated by positive religious coping. Moreover, negative religious coping predicted depressive symptoms …

Neuropsychological Effects Of Pomegranate Supplementation Following Ischemic Stroke, John A. Bellone
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Polyphenols are compounds found in fruits and vegetables that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Mounting evidence suggests that dietary polyphenol intake can reduce the detrimental effects of various disease processes, and pomegranates have frequently been examined because of their particularly high polyphenol content. Since stroke induces both oxidative stress and inflammation and is currently the leading cause of long-term disability in the U.S., we sought to determine whether dietary supplementation with polyphenols could enhance cognitive recovery in individuals who had suffered an ischemic stroke. We administered polyphenols via 2 POMx pills containing polyphenols derived from pomegranates equivalent to the content …

Introduction: Sagittal root position (SRP) of maxillary incisors is an important factor in implant treatment planning. Kan et al defined four classes of SRP in an effort to aid implant placement treatment planning and these SRP classifications represent a novel approach to describing bone changes around the maxillary incisors. The effect of orthodontic tooth movement, specifically changes in inclination, on SRP is of interest in potentially facilitating immediate implant placement. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to use Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to evaluate the adaptation of alveolar bone around the maxillary incisors as a result of orthodontic …
Hypertension In Older African Americans: Testing Psychosocial Mediators, Taylor L. Draper
Hypertension In Older African Americans: Testing Psychosocial Mediators, Taylor L. Draper
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Past research has shown that low socioeconomic status (SES) and experiencing racial discrimination are both related to hypertension in African Americans. Further, low SES and racial discrimination have been found to affect hypertension indirectly through stress, low levels of psychosocial resources, and lifestyle risk factors in African American adults. Past studies have used the Reserve Capacity Model (RCM; Gallo & Matthews, 2003; 2005) to understand these relationships. The RCM asserts that stress can be mitigated by psychosocial resources (mastery, optimism, self-esteem) which lead to healthy lifestyle behaviors predictive of cardiac health. However, there are few studies that use the RCM …

Synthesis Of Huacat® Analogues As Novel Organocatalysts For The Formation Of Asymmetric C-C Bonds, Kenneth Laboy
Synthesis Of Huacat® Analogues As Novel Organocatalysts For The Formation Of Asymmetric C-C Bonds, Kenneth Laboy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The synthesis of organic compounds with preferential stereochemistry is ubiquitous in the scientific community. A chemical reaction that asymmetrically induces one stereoisomer over another is achieved through the use of catalysts and various coupling reagents.1 Inorganic catalysts, such as TiCl4 and ZnCl2, have been documented for many decades as effective agents in the synthesis of asymmetric bonds, however, there are environmental limitations to their use. First, the asymmetric reactions involving these metal catalysts require solvents that are not environmentally-friendly, especially when used on an industrial scale and second, the metal catalysts are recycled when possible, however, there is always metal …
