A Break From The Past Or A Link In The Chain?: The Republican Party From Ronald Reagan To Donald Trump, Mitchell Evans
A Break From The Past Or A Link In The Chain?: The Republican Party From Ronald Reagan To Donald Trump, Mitchell Evans
Political Science and International Relations Theses
The election of Donald Trump appeared to be a rejection of Republican orthodoxy. That someone who targeted the previous idols of Republican beliefs about free trade, protectionism, immigration, and welfare could have so completely won over the Republican voter base was notable. However, that Republican base had changed substantially since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980. Where white college graduates have traditionally voted more Republican, and those without a college degree were more Democratic in this era, this dynamic had switched by 2016. In this thesis, I ask two questions: First, how has the Republican Party changed its ideological …
The Invincible Gender Gap In Political Ambition, Richard L. Fox, Jennifer L. Lawless
The Invincible Gender Gap In Political Ambition, Richard L. Fox, Jennifer L. Lawless
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works
When we uncovered a large gender gap in political ambition in the early 2000s, our research highlighted how far the United States was from gender parity in politics. Given marked increases in women’s numeric representation throughout the past two decades, many might expect the gender gap in political ambition to have begun to close. Results from our new study of potential candidates, however, reveal that the magnitude of the gender gap is just as large 20 years later, and two primary explanations persist as well. We posit that even though candidate recruitment has propelled more women into electoral politics, patterns …
Destruction Or Disruption: Political Violence Inconsistencies In Liberation Movements, Julia Lemmon
Destruction Or Disruption: Political Violence Inconsistencies In Liberation Movements, Julia Lemmon
Honors Thesis
Political violence is seldom viewed as an appropriate means to achieving a goal. Despite extensive studies produced on the reasons for using political violence, the scholarly world fails to consider comparing why some groups choose violence while their counterparts do not. Why is violence such an attractive method to some organized political groups, but not to others? Drawing on case studies of liberation movements, I attempt to understand what impacts the outcome of political violence during these movements. This study cross examines the Algerian Independence War with India’s nonviolent independence movement and the nonviolent independence movement of East Timor with …
Lapd Suffers Hiring Shortage Following A Shift In How Angelinos View Police, Nicole Norman
Lapd Suffers Hiring Shortage Following A Shift In How Angelinos View Police, Nicole Norman
Honors Thesis
This is a news article written about how the nationwide police shortage following the murder of George Floyd has affected the City of Los Angeles. According to a poll done by Suffolk University and the LA Times, about one third of Angelinos believe that the police are performing poorly. However, those who are younger than 35 are more than twice likely to believe that police are performing poorly. Through this article, I will explore the changes that the LAPD is making in order to keep up with a changing social climate and an upcoming workforce that is not interested in …

Imperialism In The Caribbean: Us Policies Towards Cuba And Haiti From The 1950s To The 1970s, Glory Jones, Constance Chen, Sean Dempsey
Honors Thesis
Haiti and Cuba are two Caribbean islands which prove to be prominent particularly in revolutionary culture and discourse, despite the clear differences in present-day material conditions of the islands themselves. Alongside each of the islands’ need for regional partnerships and aid, their significance in revolutionary culture connected the two islands in a distinct way. This connection is one that was forged mostly in the time period from the 1950s to the1970s, when the Cuban Revolution began and gave way to many connections to the historic Haitian Revolution. Another major factor creating such solidarity during this time period, as well as …
“Willfully Defiant: Understanding The Role Of Authority And Racialized Punitive Burdens”, Riley Mccoy
“Willfully Defiant: Understanding The Role Of Authority And Racialized Punitive Burdens”, Riley Mccoy
Honors Thesis
“Willful defiance” describes a type of student behavior that intentionally disrupts classroom order against a teacher’s direct commands. In 2013 the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education reduced the use of willful defiance suspensions as it was the disciplinary category with the largest racial disparities. Despite initial positive outcomes following the policy change, LA Unified still maintains a racial disparity in its expulsion rates and use of willful defiance. In this thesis, I investigate the remaining racialized outcomes through a structural analysis of behavioral discipline policies. Willful defiance policies represent a direct interaction between the structure of the classroom, student …
The Impact Of Culture On Member State Migration Policy In The European Union, Sophia Notter, Jennifer Ramos
The Impact Of Culture On Member State Migration Policy In The European Union, Sophia Notter, Jennifer Ramos
Honors Thesis
The European Union (EU) was formed with the belief that further integration among European states would bring sustainable peace. This began with economic integration but continued to include political and social integration as well. This ad hoc method of creating cohesion among sovereign Member States was generally accepted among Member State governments and citizens. However, in 2014, when a flood of refugees began arriving in Europe, fleeing from violence and instability in the Middle East and North Africa, the EU as an institution, and what exactly it means to be European, was challenged. Instead of pulling together and promoting the …

Climate Migration: Evaluating The Conditions That Breed Conflict, Avery Dillon
Climate Migration: Evaluating The Conditions That Breed Conflict, Avery Dillon
Honors Thesis
The prediction that climate change will cause conflict is at its core based on the assumption that climate change will trigger resource scarcity, resulting in displaced peoples and potentially violent conflict. However, the empirical evidence supporting this phenomenon is highly uncertain and at times directly contradictory. In recent decades, some have claimed that climate change’s exacerbation of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts have already played major roles in conflicts such as the Syrian Civil War (Selby 2019). Others directly dispute this direct effect, arguing instead that climate change has played only a minor role in influencing …
Shaming Citizens: An Ethical Framework For Correcting Citizen Vices, Alfredo Y. Hernandez
Shaming Citizens: An Ethical Framework For Correcting Citizen Vices, Alfredo Y. Hernandez
Honors Thesis
This paper answers the question—can citizens be shamed in a manner that is morally justifiable—by forwarding a theory of just shaming. Shaming has a divisive history in political theory. The volumes of work on both sides seems to point at a moral dilemma: shame looks to be a helpful social practice, yet it engenders unignorable negative consequences. In this paper, however, I argue that shaming in politics must be analyzed more in terms of when and how shaming is morally permissible. Shaming, employed in moments of citizen vice only, has to potential to reform citizen conduct. Furthermore, approaching …
Every Data Point Counts: Political Elections In The Age Of Digital Analytics, Julian Kehle, Samir Naimi
Every Data Point Counts: Political Elections In The Age Of Digital Analytics, Julian Kehle, Samir Naimi
Honors Thesis
Synthesizing the investigative research and cautionary messages from experts in the fields of technology, political science, and behavioral science, this project explores the ways in which digital analytics has begun to influence the American political arena. Historically, political parties have constructed systems to target voters and win elections. However, rapid changes in the field of technology (such as big data, artificial intelligence, and the prevalence of social media) threaten to undermine the integrity of elections themselves. Future political campaigns will utilize profiling to micro-target individuals in order to manipulate and persuade them with hyper-personalized political content. Most dangerously, the average …

Abductees In South Korea And Japan: Enhancing Trilateral Cooperation, Gene Park
Abductees In South Korea And Japan: Enhancing Trilateral Cooperation, Gene Park
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works
As the North Korean threat has grown, so has the case for greater cooperation between South Korea and Japan. Observers have noted, and in some cases bemoaned, the lingering historical hostility that prevents more robust cooperation. Despite the emphasis on their historical differences, both countries share a tragic experience: the abduction of nationals by the North Korean regime. Unfortunately, the issue has not promoted common purpose and resolve. Instead, the failure to coordinate on this issue has hindered diplomacy without enhancing the chances of a resolution to this tragic issue. By increasing governmental and civic cooperation, Japan and South Korea …
How Women Of Color Feminists Enabled Coalitional Members To Work Across Difference, Brooke L. O'Neal
How Women Of Color Feminists Enabled Coalitional Members To Work Across Difference, Brooke L. O'Neal
Honors Thesis
This research analyzes different theories of coalition in relation to the feminist movement. It first analyzes the model of a leftist hegemony as a type of coalitional model theorized by Laclau and Mouffe. Laclau and Mouffe move outside of a Marxist paradigm by acknowledging that unjust social conflicts exist beyond class. They theorize that a coalition based on multiple groups of oppressed people coming together in the name of liberty and equality will be enough to address sexism. Their model does not account for the inevitable factions that would exist within such a large coalition. The ethical component Laclau and …

Uncovering The Origins Of The Gender Gap In Political Ambition, Richard L. Fox, Jennifer L. Lawless
Uncovering The Origins Of The Gender Gap In Political Ambition, Richard L. Fox, Jennifer L. Lawless
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works
Based on survey responses from a national random sample of nearly 4,000 high school and college students, we uncover a dramatic gender gap in political ambition. This finding serves as striking evidence that the gap is present well before women and men enter the professions from which most candidates emerge. We then use political socialization—which we gauge through a myriad of socializing agents and early life experiences—as a lens through which to explain the individual-level differences we uncover. Our analysis reveals that parental encouragement, politicized educational and peer experiences, participation in competitive activities, and a sense of self-confidence propel young …
