The European And American Immigration Struggle: How Two Continents Endeavor To Solve The Immigration Question, Austin Creal
The European And American Immigration Struggle: How Two Continents Endeavor To Solve The Immigration Question, Austin Creal
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Both the European Union and the United States experienced an immigration crisis in the Early 2000's. Each has reacted with policies and judicial opinions based on their culture, circumstances, and geography. I conduct a comparative policy-based analysis with a multi-faced lens that will be analyzed with emphasis on the consequences of immigration and how each judicial system endeavors to solve the most pressing challenge of their times. Specifically, I compare various case law, directives, and precedent to provide a more in-depth narrative on how each system has reacted to circumstances before their respective Courts. An in-depth examination of both EU …
Female Disparity And Political Participation In The Kentucky State Legislature; The Presence Of Female Legislative Candidates And Their Effect On Voter Turnout In The Kentucky Electorate, Trenton K. Patrick
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Female disparity in the political process in the state of Kentucky follows the same distinct pattern of female disparity all across state legislatures in the United States, and in the federal legislative branch. Female representation and parity in the political process is vital to the success of governmental bodies due to the benefits that the female perspective offers to governmental processes. After extensive review of the existing literature, it is clear that there is a gap in the literature when it comes to understanding how the presence of a female candidate effects the total turnout rate, female turnout rate, and …
Keepers Of Their Party: Happy Chandler, Alben Barkley And Franklin Roosevelt’S Fight For The Soul Of The Democratic Party, Christa Kieffer
Keepers Of Their Party: Happy Chandler, Alben Barkley And Franklin Roosevelt’S Fight For The Soul Of The Democratic Party, Christa Kieffer
Theses and Dissertations--History
This thesis argues that the 1938 Kentucky Democratic primary was a critical moment for the New Deal and the Democratic Party. Furthermore, it demonstrates the fractures forming within the southern wing of the party. Through this primary the paper examines peoples’ perceptions of a changing democracy. One that they believed included a much more powerful president and meddling bureaucracy. It details the major points of the campaign, including Franklin Roosevelt’s visit to the state the famous poisoning accusations, and the corruption within the Works Progress Administration.
The Use Of Public Consultation To Construct Sex Work Related Policies, Ryan Horan
The Use Of Public Consultation To Construct Sex Work Related Policies, Ryan Horan
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The present study is a qualitative analysis of the Online Public Consultation of Prostitution -Related Offences (OPCPRO), conducted by the Canadian Department of Justice in 2014. This research describes themes that arose within the discourses of respondents to the OPCPRO, and offers a critical examination of the use of online consultations in the production of public policy. I argue that respondents to the OPCPRO, regardless of their support or opposition for criminalization of sex work, strategically draw on values echoed within the Charter of Rights and Freedoms to frame their policy propositions as consistent with sex workers individual rights. I …
Vote Choice Of Minority Groups: Emphasizing Their Issue Preferences, Md Kamrul Islam
Vote Choice Of Minority Groups: Emphasizing Their Issue Preferences, Md Kamrul Islam
Masters Theses
In explaining vote choice of minority groups, scholars of American politics often characterize them as natural democrats. They argue that they have become natural Democrats because of their minority identity and the constraints they faced throughout the history of the United States. However, this thesis questions the characterization and highlights the issue preferences of minority groups; it analyzes whether their issue preferences have an impact on shaping their vote choice. By analyzing the Cooperative Congressional Election Study (CCES) 2016 survey, this thesis has explored that minority groups vote for candidates who pay greater emphasis on the issues they care about. …
Authoritarianism Both In Venezuela And Turkey, Furkan Burcu Yildiz
Authoritarianism Both In Venezuela And Turkey, Furkan Burcu Yildiz
Masters Theses
In this paper, I undertake a comparative analysis of the authoritarian process in Venezuela and Turkey. In both countries, there are signs of political and economic instabilities. Therefore, I examine Turkey's and Venezuela's politics and economy to understand the reasons for authoritarian regimes. The comparison reveals that both countries are en route of authoritarianism; however, the motives are different. As for Venezuela. comparison grounds the argument that their authoritativeness relies on economic instability. On the contrary, Turkey has a stable economy while it has been struggling with political upheavals.
The result of this study pinpoints different ways for authoritarian regimes. …
Are Treaties The Solution To The World’S Piracy Problem? Using International Institutions To Defeat Blackbeard, Gabrielle Elizabeth Brown
Are Treaties The Solution To The World’S Piracy Problem? Using International Institutions To Defeat Blackbeard, Gabrielle Elizabeth Brown
Honors Theses
For thousands of years, pirates have been a menace on the seas, yet somehow, they have also inspired generations of authors and directors to romanticize and trivialize their plundering in literature and film. Although piracy has generally decreased around the world, especially in the Western Hemisphere and European waters, it remains a global peril that continues to jeopardize maritime security and the commercial shipping industry. The economic impact of piracy may be on the decline; however, in 2017 alone, the economic toll of piracy in East Africa was $1.4 billion, which excludes West Africa, Southeastern Asia, and the Caribbean, all …
Refugees From Syria Caught Between War And Borders: A Journey Towards Protection, Maissaa Almustafa
Refugees From Syria Caught Between War And Borders: A Journey Towards Protection, Maissaa Almustafa
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation examines the global crisis of protection through the lens of the Syrian refugee crisis and the particular experiences of refugees’ journeys to Sweden.
In doing so, the dissertation challenges the dominant narratives that represent refugees either as victims who deserve aid in their regions, or as threats when they exert their agency and journey towards the global north. In the same vein, the dissertation problematizes the dominant narrative of the “European crisis of migration” and proposes that the “unauthorized” arrivals of refugees in Europe are reflections of a global crisis of protection, a crisis that develops as a …
From Inclusive Governance To Peace: Exploring African Governance Systems, Karolina Werner
From Inclusive Governance To Peace: Exploring African Governance Systems, Karolina Werner
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation defines and explores the concept of inclusive governance, highlighting linkages between inclusion in governance, legitimacy, and peace. Focusing specifically on the inclusion of traditional, local systems of governance in state government, I explore the unique role traditional institutions have as a bridge between the communities they serve and the government. I examine the relationship between governance, quality of inclusion, legitimacy, and sustainable peace through case studies, challenging prevailing narratives and conceptualizing inclusive governance through a reflexive analysis of existing literature, theory, and empirical evidence.
I offer a case study analysis of Uganda highlighting the relationship between state government …
