Deepening Democracy: Inclusion, Deliberation, And Voice In The Grassroots South, Annie L. Boiter-Jolley
Deepening Democracy: Inclusion, Deliberation, And Voice In The Grassroots South, Annie L. Boiter-Jolley
Theses and Dissertations
Through an exploration of grassroots challenges to shallow democracy in South Carolina, this dissertation offers a model of democratization based on inclusion, deliberation, and empowerment as a remedy for democratic insufficiency. I posit that greater emphasis on inclusive democratic deliberation, both inside and outside formal political structures, will help deepen the South’s shallow democracy, and that inclusive deliberation fostered through grassroots organizing that priorities consciousness raising, empowerment, and activism training will positively affect participants, deliberation, and policy outcomes. Taking a grounded theory approach, I consider case studies of three organizations based in Columbia, South Carolina, and their attending theories of …
Wine About It: How Climate Change Is Affecting International Wine Markets, Krysta Suzanne Gingue
Wine About It: How Climate Change Is Affecting International Wine Markets, Krysta Suzanne Gingue
Honors Theses and Capstones
The purpose of this study is to understand the social context surrounding wine and how consumers and producers will act within the existing market structures to physical changes to wine due to climate change. After defining the socially embedded structure of market values, this paper questions how they will survive with the visible and invisible changes being made to wines and wine regions. Through various case studies the paper uncovers climate events happening across the world and how they will potentially change the economic landscape of wine markets. The different lenses required to understand the market lead to competing conclusions. …
The Incarceration Nation: Interpreting The United States Imprisonment Rate, Robert Sharp
The Incarceration Nation: Interpreting The United States Imprisonment Rate, Robert Sharp
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This research paper begins by establishing the importance of studying the United States’ incarceration rate. Overall mass imprisonment and racial disparities in sentencing are two of the main concerns when discussing this issue. Previously published literature has indicated various contributory factors to the racial disparity in sentencing, such as judge’s discretion, educational attainment, and policy implementation. This paper tests five hypotheses that assess which factors influence the incarceration rate. The independent variables are overall minority population, public ideology, educational attainment, unemployment, and poverty. Each hypothesis predicts positive or negative relationships between the United States incarceration rate and the corresponding independent …
The Effectiveness Of U.S. Development Assistance In Fostering Sustainable Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Deborah Munganga
The Effectiveness Of U.S. Development Assistance In Fostering Sustainable Development In Sub-Saharan Africa, Deborah Munganga
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The Sub-Saharan region of Africa is one of the most resource-rich continents in the world, but it lacks economic growth. One of the factors contributing to its low economic development is its historical legacy of colonization, authoritarian regimes, and interstate and intrastate conflicts (Ocheni & Nwankwo, 2012; Bayeh, 2015). As a consequence, this sub-region, along with South Asia, has one of the world's lowest levels of per-capita income. The existing research on Sub-Saharan Africa indicates that little to no development occurs, due to how donor agencies implement aid programs. This paper examines whether U.S. development assistance has fostered sustainable growth …
Social Media Communication By Michigan County And City Government, Courtney J. Marshall
Social Media Communication By Michigan County And City Government, Courtney J. Marshall
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In this fast-paced society, municipal governments struggle to keep up with venues of communication to relay information to their public. As of 2017, an estimation of 23 million people follow Twitter accounts maintained by government entities. Residents depend on social media more than going to their represented municipal websites for information. Today, government employees struggle to produce information that the public can read and understand. The purpose of this study is to discover how cities and counties in Michigan use websites and social media and if a community's affluence affects governments' ability to communicate to their citizens through social media. …
Intentions Behind U.S.-Chinese Diplomacy, Ian Kelly
Intentions Behind U.S.-Chinese Diplomacy, Ian Kelly
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Relations with China are more important than ever not even just for the United States, but the whole world. With Donald Trump as our President for now, general relations with China are on unsteady water since there is no predicting what either side might do. With the importance of Chinese relations so topical today, the base of the official U.S.-China relations would be just as important. Many people think Richard Nixon was the President who established these ties with China, but it was actually Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter had to trek through the muck set by President Nixon and Ford …
The Meaning Of A Woman's Work: Refugees, Statelessness, Nationality, And The Women's International League For Peace And Freedom, 1918-1931, Monica Burney
Masters Theses
This work analyzes how the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) sought to influence how the League of Nations approached questions of nationality and statelessness between 1918 and 1931. Especially important were the WILPF's efforts to aid women and children who remained in Turkey following the Armenian genocide, as well as the organization's efforts to address the statelessness crisis that arose following the dissolution of Austria-Hungary. Their activism helped to pressure the League of Nations into creating the Commission of Enquiry on Deported Women and Children in Turkey and Asia Minor. Their efforts to end statelessness culminated in …
War Spin: How U.S. Politicians, The President And The Media Frame Foreign Intervention, Samantha White
War Spin: How U.S. Politicians, The President And The Media Frame Foreign Intervention, Samantha White
Masters Theses
In this research, I seek to explain how three different foreign policy actors, the President, key Senators, and the media frame intervention policy when determining if intervention is used for human rights versus U.S. interests. I will be looking at four different areas of turmoil (Bosnia (1992-1995), Rwanda (1994), Syria (2011-present) and Iraq (2003-2011)) to see if the Presidents, Senators, and the media framed their intervention around human rights atrocities being committed, or if they framed it around a national security dilemma.
Blurring The Spectrum: Exploring Queer Conservatism, Austin P. Mejdrich
Blurring The Spectrum: Exploring Queer Conservatism, Austin P. Mejdrich
Masters Theses
Running parallel to the groundbreaking and historic advancement of LGBTQ rights over the past decade has been the rise in the prominence and public discourse of queer conservative thinking. From the Log Cabin Republicans to far-right nationalistic politics, queer conservatives underscore both diverging ideologies within the modern American conservative tradition and the increase of far-right politics in Western societies. This study argues that queer conservatism, while traditionally less explored in the broader context of sexuality politics, is consequential to an understanding of the LGBTQ community and queer politics. Thus, an exploration of queer conservatism as a political ideology is explored, …
