Effect Of Salinity (Nacl) On Germination, Growth, Ion Accumulation, And Protein Synthesis In Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), Thamir S. Al-Niemi
Effect Of Salinity (Nacl) On Germination, Growth, Ion Accumulation, And Protein Synthesis In Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), Thamir S. Al-Niemi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To study the effect of NaCl stress on gene expression in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted with 22 cultivars during germination and post-germination growth. The ability of alfalfa cultivars to germinate at the different NaCl concentrations was not related to their postgermination performance (salt tolerance) under those conditions.
Genetic effects were evident for Na and Cl ion uptake and accumulation in alfalfa shoots and roots. The strategies of alfalfa cultivars to cope with NaCl stress includes exclusion of Na from shoots and Cl from roots or from the whole plant depending on cultivar and …
Revegetating Salt-Affected Land With Shrubs, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Fionnuala Frost, Steve Vlahos, Norm Richards
Revegetating Salt-Affected Land With Shrubs, Ed Barrett-Lennard, Fionnuala Frost, Steve Vlahos, Norm Richards
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The establishment of salt-tolerant shrubs such as saltbush and bluebush on salt-affected land reduces the risk of soil erosion, and can also fit into farm programmes as a profitable enterprise. Salt-tolerant shrubs can be used as forage for sheep in summer and autumn, when the availability of annual pastures is low or annual pastures are just beginning to emerge. This article describes three methods for establishing shrubs on salt-affected land and what affects shrub establishment.

Calcium Amelioration Of Salinity (Sodicity) On Nitrogen Fixation, Stomatal Resistance, Potassium/Sodium Ratio And Total Nitrogen Of Phaseolus Vulgaris L., Mahmood Akhavan-Kharazian
Calcium Amelioration Of Salinity (Sodicity) On Nitrogen Fixation, Stomatal Resistance, Potassium/Sodium Ratio And Total Nitrogen Of Phaseolus Vulgaris L., Mahmood Akhavan-Kharazian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Extreme salinity is one of the most common environmental constraints with which legume/rhizobia symbionts must deal in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. In some areas, with good management, it has been economically possible to ameliorate the saline soil with calcium. The objective of this study, therefore, was to investigate calcium amelioration of salinity (sodicity) on nitrogen fixation, stomatal resistance, potassium/sodium ratio, and total nitrogen of Phaseolus vulgaris L. Seeds of snapbeans were grown in pots under green house conditions and were irrigated with NaCl concentrations of 0, 0.4, 0.8 or 1.2 S m-1 combined with CaS04 …
Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty
Some Factors Affecting Germination And Seedling Growth Of Scotch Thistle, C. J. Scifres, M. K. Mccarty
Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station
Scotch thistle (Onopordum acanthium L.) is a native of Eurasia. Scotch thistle is found in the grasslands of central Nebraska, with heaviest infestations in Gosper, Dawson, and Valley Counties and limited occurrence in 18 additional counties. The Nebraska Unicameral declared it a noxious weed in 1965. This study measures the effects of some environmental factors on scotch thistle germination and seedling growth, and clarifies some of the interactions of these with inherent characteristics of the achene. The effect of achene coat, stratification, light, temperature, growth regulators, pH, depth of planting, salinity, germination inhibitors, and moisture stress were studied.
