Effect Of Tillage And Herbicide Treatments On Redvine (Brunnichia Ovata) Subterranean Morphology, E. C. Gordon, T. C. Keisling, L. R. Oliver, T. A. Castillo Jan 2002

Effect Of Tillage And Herbicide Treatments On Redvine (Brunnichia Ovata) Subterranean Morphology, E. C. Gordon, T. C. Keisling, L. R. Oliver, T. A. Castillo

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Redvine Brunnichia ovata (Walt.) Shinners is a perennial weed that reproduces from seed, rootstock, and rhizomes. Redvine infested areas that were exposed to different tillage practices, slicing techniques, and herbicide treatments were selected to excavate in order to observe rhizome and root morphology. When comparing tillage systems, deep tillage appeared to delay rhizome development following cultivation, but a characteristic branching occurred over time. Shallow cultivation (2.5 to 7.5m) concentrated rhizomes immediately below the depth of tillage; whereas, no-till areas concentrated rhizomes near the soil surface. Slicing the underground parts of redvine will not kill rhizomes if they are still attached …

Checklist Of Major Plant Species In Ashley County, Arkansas Noted By General Land Office Surveyors, Don C. Bragg

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The original General Land Office (GLO) survey notes for the Ashley County, Arkansas, area were examined to determine the plant taxa mentioned during the 1818 to 1855 surveys. While some challenges in identifying species were encountered, at least 39 families and approximately 100 species were identified with reasonable certainty. Most references were for trees used to witness corners or lines. Prominent arboreal genera recorded in these early survey records included Quercus, Pinus, Carya, Liquidambar, Nyssa, Ulmus, Acer, Fraxinus, and Taxodium. A number of shrubs, vines, graminoids, and herbaceous species were also reported, including notable genera like Vaccinium, Lindera, Crataegus, Myrica, …

Fire Effects On Three Trophic Levels In A Central Arkansas Grassland, Laura Skelton, Amy Polk, Brenna C. Fitzgerald, Matthew D. Moran Jan 2002

Fire Effects On Three Trophic Levels In A Central Arkansas Grassland, Laura Skelton, Amy Polk, Brenna C. Fitzgerald, Matthew D. Moran

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We studied the effect of a late growing-season fire on the plant and foliar arthropod communities in a naturally occurring grassland. In central Arkansas, these grasslands are common on south-facing slopes where shallow soils and hot/dry weather conditions during the summer cannot support the growth of a forest community. Patches of grassland were burned in the autumn (4 November, late growing season), often the time of natural fires in Arkansas, and compared to unburned areas. Fire increased the biomass of forbs and decreased the biomass of grasses, although overall biomass was not different between treatments. Among the foliar arthropods, herbivores …

Characterization Of A PorosTm-Fumonisin B1 Affinity Column For Isolating Ceramide Synthase From Rat Liver, S. Jernigan, W. B. Melchior Jr., G. R. Jenkins, K. L. Rowland, D. W. Roberts, P. C. Howard, H. Tolleson

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fumonisin B1 is a mycotoxin produced by fungi of the genus Fusarium, common pathogens of corn and other grain plants. Toxic effects associated with fumonisin B1 include equine leukoencephalomacia, porcine pulmonary edema, rat renal carcinoma, and murine hepatocellular carcinoma. Increased risk for esophageal cancer in humans has been epidemiologically associated with consumption of corn contaminated with Fusarium, suggesting that fumonisin B1 may be involved. The biological effects of fumonisin B1 exposure result primarily from disruption of de novo sphingolipid biosynthesis via inhibition of ceramide synthase. Exposure of animals or cultured cells to fumonisin B1 results in the characteristic accumulation of …

Optical Transmittance Of A Rice Leaf Via Ray Tracing, Stephen Nicoletti, Alois (Al) J. Adams Jan 2000

Optical Transmittance Of A Rice Leaf Via Ray Tracing, Stephen Nicoletti, Alois (Al) J. Adams

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Optical reflectance from a plant leaf increases in response to stress and disease. Previous studies at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock found that, while the reflectance from a rice leaf increased with increased salinity, reflectance changes could not be used to differentiate one stress or disease from another. The objective of this study is to characterize the angular distribution of optical transmittance for a healthy rice leaf using a ray tracing technique and assuming a three-media optical model. The ultimate goal is to relate this distribution to specific plant pathologies. Three rays are traced through the cross section …

Characteristics Of Some Fruiting Plant Species In Northwest Arkansas, And The Avian Assemblages That Feed On Them, John W. Prather, Kimberly G. Smith, Michael A. Mlodinow, Cecilia M. Riley

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fruits continue to be recognized as an important food source for birds in temperate areas, particularly during the fall migration period. More than 20 species of plants producing fleshy fruits are found in the Arkansas Ozarks. However, only a few of these appear to be important resources for birds during the fall migration period (August - October). Among those are sassafras (Sassafras albidum), gray-backed grape (Vitis cinerea), black cherry (Prunus serotina), hercules club (Araliaspinosa) and pokeweed (Phytolacca americana). Over the past 4 years, we have documented the physical and nutritional characteristics of those fruits and taken observational data on the …

Effect Of Media Constituents On In Vitro Culturing Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata) Shoot Tip And Leaf Disk Explants, Mohanjeet S. Brar, Edwin J. Anderson, Teddy E. Morelock, Ronald W. Mcnew

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Cowpea is an important legume food crop that is commonly grown in Arkansas and numerous other southern states. The application of biotechnological approaches for the improvement of U.S. cowpea genotypes is currently not possible due to the lack of a regeneration and transformation system. Therefore, the first priority of our research efforts is the development of a plant regeneration system that will facilitate plant transformation studies. In an effort to optimize the media requirements for tissue culturing cowpea, we evaluated the in vitro response of shoot tip and leaf disk explants to various levels of Murashige and Skoog (MS) macro …

Factors Affecting Transformation Efficiency Of Poplar Hybrid Line Nc5331 By Agrobacterium Tumefaciens, Xin Y. Li, Feng H. Huang, Edward E. Gbur Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Acetosyringone, pH, and glucose, which may affect Agrobacterium-mediated gene transformation to poplar hybrid line NC5331, were investigated in an attempt to raise the gene transfer efficiency. The Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain used harbored disarmed vector (pMON9749) carrying a bet-glucuronidase gene and a kanamycin resistant marker. With the addition of acetosyringone at 25 to 75 MuM, the transformation efficiency was significantly enhanced, but dependent on pH. Acetosyringone required a pH above 5.8 to achieve an efficient gene transfer and failed to enhance the transformation at lower pH. However, with addition of both acetosyringone and glucose, the transformation was not affected by pH. …
