Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports
This report marks the completion of the second year of research at this farm. Experimental work was continued in the areas of fertility and cultural practices, plant disease control, crop management, and crop variety testing. Investigations were expanded into corn plant populations, potassium deficiency, plant breeding and genetic studies on corn, grasses, legumes, sorghum and soybeans. Livestock research was initiated in the spring of 1962 when 106 feeder pigs were placed in three temporary buildings constructed for this purpose. Results of this trial are summarized in this report. Ninety(90) fall pigs have been started as a continuation of this experiment.

A Modified Procedure For Assay Of Melilotic Acid In Sweetclover1, Walter R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz
A Modified Procedure For Assay Of Melilotic Acid In Sweetclover1, Walter R. Akeson, Francis A. Haskins, Herman J. Gorz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
A modified procedure for the assay of melilotic acid in sweetclover leaves is described. The procedure provides for (a) extraction of melilotic acid and melilotyl glucoside by autoclaving the plant tissue in water, (b) hydrolysis of melilotyl glucoside by autoclaving in 1 N HCl, (c) separation of melilotic acid from interfering compounds by paper chromatography, and (d) colorimetric assay of the chromatographically-separated melilotic acid. Application of the procedure to plants representing various genotypes of sweetclover yielded results indicating that the melilotic acid content of leaves from plants high in content of o-hydroxycinnamic acid is about three times as high …

To evaluate the premise that Cl- and other anions might influence tuber quality by affecting the esterification of inorganic phosphorus and subsequent energy transformations involving metabolic processes of carbohydrate synthesis or degradation, the author studied the effects of Cl ~ in relation to cations and anions on nutrient uptake and inorganic phosphorus transformations.
The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin
The Effects Of Plant Virus Purification Procedures On Extracts Of Healthy Plants, Sue Ann Tolin
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
This study was undertaken to devise an easy, accurate method to detect and separate various components in extracts of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants by using techniques common to virus purification and to determine the effect of some of the more common denaturing and adsorbing agents on these healthy plant components.Conditions for density-gradient centrifugation were selected to give the best separation of normal components, and these conditions were then used as the basis of an analytical method to evaluate the denaturation procedures.
Protoplasmic components of healthy bean, tobacco, and barley plants were isolated and studied by use of techniques …
Differential Salt Tolerance Of Hordeum Jubatum, Agropyron Trachycaulum, And Their Natural Hybrid Elymus Macounii, Marian Lucy Hanna
Differential Salt Tolerance Of Hordeum Jubatum, Agropyron Trachycaulum, And Their Natural Hybrid Elymus Macounii, Marian Lucy Hanna
Theses and Dissertations
Because plants show a wide range of variation in growth in the presence of excessive concentrations of soluble salts in the soil, this study was undertaken to determine the effects of various concentrations of NaCL and Na2SO4 on the growth and development of Hordeum jubatum, Agropyron trachycaulum, and the natural hybrid of these two plants, Elymus macounii.

Distribution Of Fallout Cesium-137 In Litter, Humus, And Surface Soil Layers Under Natural Vegetation In The Great Smoky Mountains, Jerry Carlyle Ritchie
Masters Theses
Since the explosion of the first nuclear weapon in July of 1945 and with subsequent tests, especially of hydrogen devices which contribute most of the world-wide fallout, and with the development of nuclear power plants, the world has become more and more interested in radioactive fallout and the problems related to it. During the detonation of a nuclear device some 170 radioactive isotopes are produced. Of these 170 isotopes there are seven principal gamma-ray-emitting fission products which have sufficiently long half-lives to be important in world-wide fallout (table I, adapted from Mortensen 1961). The purpose of this study was to …
