Late Tertiary Rodents From The Catamarca Province, Argentina : The Field Museum Collections, Lee A. Schremp

The rodents collected in the 1920's by the Marshall Field Expedition for the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, are systematically reviewed and placed within the stratigraphic framework established at the time of collection. One new genus (Proeuryzygomys) and three new species (Abracoma intermedias, Proeuryzygomys diminutiva, and Cayiodon (Lelongia) catamarcensis) are proposed. Two distinct faunas are recognized corresponding to the Huayquerian and Montehermosan Land Mammal Ages respectively. Several computer programs were developed to aid in character analysis.

High Recovery Desalting Of Brackish Water By Electrodialysis: Field Tests At Yuma Desalting Test Facility & At La Verkin Springs, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation

An ED (electrodialysis pilot plant achieved high desalting recoveries of nearly 95 percent at the YDTF (Yuma Desalting Test Facility, Arizona) and 92 percent at LVS (La Verkin Springs, Utah) during over 4000 hours of operation. Brine TDS (total dissolved solids) concentrations of nearly 100 000 g/m³ were obtained at LVS, which is a greater brine concentration than is possible using RO (reverse osmosis). The LVS required ED energy (while producing a product TDS concentration of about 1000 g/m³) is estimated to be about one-third the energy requirements of a commercially available distillation brine concentrator. A discharge of chromium-arsenic-copper laden wastewater occurred periodically from 1970 to 1980 at a wood preserving company located in southwestern Kalamazoo County, Michigan. As a result of this discharge, soils at the company site became contaminated with chromium, arsenic, and copper, and a local glacial outwash aquifer became contaminated with hexavalent chromium.

Soil samples collected from the discharge site were analyzed for clay-silt-sand-gravel content, organic matter, pH, clay mineralogy, and chromium, arsenic, copper, iron, and manganese content. The magmas which formed the northeastern Idaho batholith were contaminated with, or derived from, old crustal material as evidenced, from previous studies, by high whole-rock ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios, relatively high ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁶Pb ages, and Archean to Proterozoic upper intercept ages for batholithic zircons.

The old zircon component has been identified in this study by separating zircons into fractions based on size and morphology. Pb/U isotopic ratios are distributed on a chord with a lower concordia intercept intrusive age of 73.6+6 m.y. Bioclastic limestones, siltstones, and shales of the Point Pleasant Member were deposited in a shallow marine environment immediately below normal effective wave base. High-energy conditions produced by storms lowered the effective wave base and stirred the bottom sediments and redistributed them into bedforms. The different types of contacts, distribution of the faunal groups, and fabrics permit inferences regarding energy levels and assignment of samples to a mode of deposition. Vertical and lateral trends were then deduced. An ever increasing number of processors are becoming available to the multiprocessor user. For faster response and efficient utilization of parallel processing systems it is necessary to develop parallel algorithms to solve a single problem.

This paper evaluates the complexity of resolution algorithms run in a parallel processing environment. An overview of parallel processing is presented along with a discussion of general resolution and resolution-refutation systems. An analysis of the complexity required by different control strategies to perform resolution programing is presented using both uniprocessor and multiprocessor systems.

The reaction between copper(II) and N -(2-hydroxyethyl)iminodiacetatonickelate( II) (NiHEIDA) was studied between pH 4.0 and 5.6 over a 70 fold variation in copper concentration at an ionic strength of 1.25 and a temperature of 25° C. The reaction order in both NiHEIDA and Cu(U) is first. The reaction rate is pH sensitive and a hydrogen dependent pathway as w ell as copper dependent and copper and hydrogen independent pathways were found.

The use of integral equations to find radial distribution functions for computing thermodynamic properties is examined. The system considered is a simple classical fluid with interactions according to the Lennard-Jones (6-12) pair potential function. Two parametric integral equations (C and T) are studied in detail. Derivation of equation T and a power series solution are given. Computer solutions at several different temperatures, densities, and parameter values are obtained. Comparisons are made betv/een these results and results from integral equation N, PY, and HNC, and results from Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics, and power series methods. The RIMS program is designed "To provide SCD (Soil Conservation District) supervisory with adequate data about agriculture and related natural resources of their district and to use this data for district responsibilities" (Utah Department of Agriculture 1984). The department's guidelines for RIMS go on to describe SCD responsibilities for short and long-term conservation inputs into various state resource plans, giving direction to Agriculture Resource Development Loan fund programs, and giving direction to SCD programs. The Food and Drug Administration requires the disclosure of total unsaturation of commercial products as an indication of nutritional value. This unsaturation is a guide to the expected stability of food additives, such as edible oils and foods in which they are used. Unsaturation is typically evaluated as an iodine number, calculated for these additives based on their consumption of iodine through addition across the carbon-carbon double bonds. This titration method can typically take 45 minutes.

The kinetics of the reaction of aquonickel (II) ion with N'N'-dimethlethylenediaminediacetic acid has been studied at 25°C and 0.1M iconic strength over a pH range of 6.0 to 9.3 using stopped-flow techniques. Formation reactions in all cases were first-order in Ni (II) and in ligand. The formation rate constant for the protonated and unprotonated species were evaluated and compared to their theoretical value. The rate-determining step is shown to be ring closure. A comparison of this system with other studies involving complexation of nickel (II) confirm the magnitude of the internal conjugate base effect and also shows a correlation between …

Luminosities and effective temperatures are calculated for 17 nonvariable yellow giants and supergiants and nine Cepheids which were previously identified as members of open clusters. These stars are identified as being in the helium core burning stage of evolution. A comparison with the predictions of pulsation theory does not show any disagreement. On the other hand, several comparisons with the theory of stellar evolution produce discrepancies which suggest that effects neglected in the calculations may play an important role in the evolution of these stars.

A device for automatic control of pressure in an ion-atom scattering experiment has been constructed. The system was modeled to achieve the minimum time for transition from one pressure to another. The pressure controller "learns" the system response and iterates the parameters used in "profiling" the valve voltage to reduce the transition time. The device has been used with two different scattering chambers and has worked well with both.

Increased Optical Damage Resistance In Lithium Niobate, D. A. Bryan, Robert Gerson, H. E. Tomaschke

We have confirmed greatly improved resistance to photorefractive damage in compositions of lithium niobate containing 4.5 at. % MgO or more. Holographic diffraction measurements of photorefraction demonstrated that the improved performance is due to a hundredfold increase in the photoconductivity, rather than a decrease in the Glass current. The diffraction efficiency shows an Arrhenius dependence on temperature, with an activation energy of 0.1 eV for the damage-resistant compositions, compared with 0.5 eV for undoped or low-magnesium compositions. The damage-resistant compositions are distinguished by a 2.83-μm absorption line instead of the usual 2.87-μm line due to the OH-stretch vibration.

Optical absorption spectra were obtained after reducing (i.e., vacuum annealing) a series of LiNbO3 crystals grown from melts having various Mg concentrations and Li/Nb ratios. A band peaking at 500 nm, and assigned to oxygen vacancies containing two electrons, was the only absorption present in one set of crystals following reduction. In contrast, two overlapping bands peaking near 1200 and 760 nm were present in the other set of crystals immediately after the reduction. The 1200-nm band is assigned to a previously unreported electron trap and the 760-nm band to oxygen vacancies containing only one electron. These data are interpreted …

This document presents objectives and results of the Field Appraisal of Resource Management Systems (FARMS) study'S second year. The principal objectives of FARMS were to study the relationship of crop yields to soil erosion and to simulate the economic nature of this relationship. Crop management, soils, conservation practices and management, crop yields, soil chemistry, and sociological data were collected from 800 plots in 1981. This report presents statistics for rill and sheet soil erosion, which are estimated by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and assumed to represent a long-term rather than short-term effect. The Farmington gabbro-metagabbro complex is located along the western margin of the Charlotte belt of North Carolina. At least twp or more intrusions occur within the complex. The Farmington gabbroic intrusion is postmetamorphic and contains plagioclase, hornblende, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and olivine. Small amounts of magnetite, ilmenite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, hematite, hercynitic spinel, and biotite occur. Textures are hypidiomorphic granular to hypidiomorphic inequigranular. Four types of gabbroic rocks are present; hornblende gabbronite, olivine-hornblende gabbronorite, hornblende norite, and olivine-hornblende norite, with olivine-hornblende gabbronorite predominating. A limited range of progressive differentiation is indicated by restricted increases in FeO/(FeO +MgO) ratios for mafic silicates …

There has been much discussion in the recent statistical literature concerning the optimal manner for a consulting statistician to operate within a larger organization. Marquardt (1979) described the "total involvement" approach, involving a statistician from conceptualization of a project to the final report; Finney (1982) discussed the questions a statistician should ask for effective consulting; and Bishop, Peterson, and Tragser (1982) argued that a statistician's most substantive contributions are made during the planning stages of a study. McCulloch et al. (1982) described a program for training statistical consultants, and Hunter (1981) discussed the roles a statistician may assume.

We describe a computationally efficient method for performing self-consistent-field calculations of the electronic structure of random solid-solution alloys within the multiple-scattering coherent-potential-approximation formalism (KKR-CPA). We utilize a cluster method for solving the KKR-CPA equations and integrate along a contour in the complex-energy plane to reconstruct the single-site electronic densities.

Several limnological studies have been conducted in Lake Mead during the past decade. The recent studies clearly show that most of Lake Mead is deficient in nutrients, especially phosphorus, and very low in productivity. The reservoir-wide average total phosphorus concentration for 1981 - 1982 was only 9 mg/m³. This is below levels found In most oligotrophic lakes and reservoirs. Algal biomass, as measured by chlorophyll-a, averaged only 1.5 mg/m³. That also places Lake Mead in the oligotrophic range. Transparency, as measured by a Secchi disc, averaged 9-5 m in Lake Mead during 1981-1982. That far exceeds …

A systematic study has been made of the strength of the intrinsic absorption, or loss, for millimeter to micrometer electromagnetic radiation propagating in simple ceramic materials. This study employed a number of model diatomic systems whose simplicity enabled the basic two-phonon decay process, responsible for this intrinsic loss, to be computed with precision, even at the lowest frequencies, on a dedicated microcomputer. It was found that, at least at low frequencies, the loss was a relatively structureless universal function of the atomic mass ratio, in general agreement with earlier results for real alkali halides. Gd_(3-x)v_xS₄ provides a convenient analog of a compensated semiconductor in which, for x≃0.3, the mobility edge can be tuned smoothly through the Fermi energy by the application of a magnetic field. The results of a search for a minimum metallic conductivity demonstrate that, down to T=6 mK, the metal-insulator transition is smooth. In the insulating regime, the temperature dependence of the conductivity was more consistent with the theory of mutual interactions than with the theory of pure localization.
