Benford’S Law And Its Applications To Accounting, Lucy Wilson Oct 2023

Benford’S Law And Its Applications To Accounting, Lucy Wilson

Mathematics Student Projects

In this paper, we introduce the concept of Benford’s Law, which is the mathematical observation that in many naturally occurring numerical datasets, the leading digits are not evenly distributed. We actually find that smaller leading digits appear more often than larger ones. We will explore when and why this phenomenon occurs and how we can use statistical tests to determine how well a dataset conforms to Benford’s Law. We will also see how Benford’s Law can be used by auditors in the accounting field to catch potential fraud.

Using Alteryx Designer In Audit, Nolan Asiala

Honors Projects

My senior project was built around data analysis and how it relates to the auditing profession. Initially, I was planning on attending a data analytics competition, but that was canceled due to the events of COVID-19. This project utilized the Alteryx Designer program to demonstrate how it can be used during an audit engagement. By creating a workflow in Alteryx Designer, a report from a client can be cleaned and reformatted into a working dataset. My project includes two Excel files, a Microsoft Word document that serves as a brief introduction to the program, and a video describing the workflow …

"OPTIONS PAPER for the First Peoples' Water Engagement Council (FPWEC)"

"DATED 20 APRIL 2012"

Abstract: This paper highlights the options for a path forward to establish an Indigenous Economic Water Fund (IEWF) through acquisition of water entitlements1 by indigenous people in systems where the consumptive pool is fully allocated. The water allocation that comes from indigenous holdings in the consumptive pool is an important mechanism for enabling Indigenous communities to achieve economic development and as such is a legitimate strategy for ‘Closing the Gap’. …

Accounting For Uncertainty In Ecological Analysis: The Strengths And Limitations Of Hierarchical Statistical Modeling, Noel Cressie, Catherine Calder, James Clark, Jay Ver Hoef, Christopher Wikle Jan 2009

Accounting For Uncertainty In Ecological Analysis: The Strengths And Limitations Of Hierarchical Statistical Modeling, Noel Cressie, Catherine Calder, James Clark, Jay Ver Hoef, Christopher Wikle

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Analyses of ecological data should account for the uncertainty in the process(es) that generated the data. However, accounting for these uncertainties is a difficult task, since ecology is known for its complexity. Measurement and/or process errors are often the only sources of uncertainty modeled when addressing complex ecological problems, yet analyses should also account for uncertainty in sampling design, in model specification, in parameters governing the specified model, and in initial and boundary conditions. Only then can we be confident in the scientific inferences and forecasts made from an analysis. Probability and statistics provide a framework that accounts for multiple …
