Effects Of The Vertical Plasma Drift Velocity On The Generation And Evolution Of Equatorial Spread F, Bela G. Fejer, L. Scherliess, E. R. De Paula

We use radar observations from the Jicamarca Observatory from 1968 to 1992 to study the effects of the F region vertical plasma drift velocity on the generation and evolution of equatorial spread F. The dependence of these irregularities on season, solar cycle, and magnetic activity can be explained as resulting from the corresponding effects on the evening and nighttime vertical drifts. In the early night sector, the bottomside of the F layer is almost always unstable. The evolution of the unstable layer is controlled by the history of the vertical drift velocity. The method of equivalent quanta is applied both to photon-photon and, by analogy, to double pomeron exchange in heavy-ion collisions. This Weizsäcker-Williams approach is used to calculate production cross sections for the glueball candidate fJ(1710) meson via photon-photon and pomeron-pomeron fusion in peripheral heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. The impact parameter dependence for total and elastic cross sections is presented, and compared with results for proton-proton collisions.

We demonstrate a scheme to pattern vacuum-deposited, small molecular weight organic light emitting diodes 􏰉OLEDs􏰀. Both the organic thin films and the metallic electrodes are patterned by shifting the position of a single shadow mask which accompanies the substrate throughout the deposition process. A full color, stacked OLED 􏰉SOLED􏰀 has been fabricated using this technique. The substrate movement relative to the mask was manually controlled to a root mean square accuracy of 􏰑8 􏰇m using a mask translating fixture. The performance of the patterned SOLED is comparable with that of devices fabricated by conventional, low tolerance methods. The limits to …

Dissipative flows model a large variety of physical systems. In this Letter the evolution of such systems is interpreted as a process of computation; the attractor of the dynamics represents the output. A framework for an algorithmic analysis of dissipative flows is presented, enabling the comparison of the performance of discrete and continuous time analog computation models. A simple algorithm for finding the maximum of n numbers is analyzed, and shown to be highly efficient. The notion of tractable (polynomial) computation in the Turing model is conjectured to correspond to computation with tractable (analytically solvable) dynamical systems having polynomial complexity.

Using published luminosity and molecular gas profiles of the late-stage mergers NGC 3921, NGC 7252, and Arp 220, we examine the expected luminosity profiles of the evolved merger remnants, especially in light of the massive CO complexes that are observed in their nuclei. For NGC 3921 and NGC 7252, we predict that the resulting luminosity profiles will be characterized by an r1/4 law. In view of previous optical work on these systems, it seems likely that they will evolve into normal elliptical galaxies as regards their optical properties. We have detected redshifted CO (2-1) emission at 43 GHz and radio continuum emission at 1.47 and 4.86 GHz from the z = 4.4 QSO BRI 1335-0417 using the Very Large Array. The CO data imply optically thick emission from warm (>30 K) molecular gas with a total mass, M(H2), of (1.5 ± 0.3) × 1011 Msun, using the standard Galactic gas mass-to-CO luminosity conversion factor. We set an upper limit to the CO source size of 1farcs1 and a lower limit of 0farcs23(Tex/50 K)-1/2, where Tex is the gas excitation temperature. We derive an upper limit to the …

The uptake and use of GIS in the public sector in the United Kingdom was critically reviewed in a recent paper by Worrall & Bond (1996). Their main conclusion was that the high hopes about the use of GIS that had been prevalent during the late 1980s had failed to materialise. This they argued was due mainly to organisational and implementation issues but also highlighted the lack of effective spatial analysis techniques available to practitioners who have made the heavy investment needed in GIS. Thermospheric winds have been systematically determined at Arequipa, Peru, and Arecibo, Puerto Rico, from Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements of Doppler shifts in the nightglow 630 nm line. The wind databases (1983 – 1990 at Arequipa and 1980 – 1990 at Arecibo) have been edited to eliminate measurements during geomagnetically disturbed conditions, then sorted by season and solar flux level. Following this, they were averaged to obtain the climatological behavior of the nighttime wind variations at the two locations. A new averaging technique, multivariate regression analysis, has been applied to the data, and the results compared to our prior binning averages. The …

We have developed a simple oxidation experiment that presents the student with a puzzle and is a good exercise in 1H NMR spectroscopy. The experiment, which illustrates the important concept of selectivity in organic synthesis, involves selective oxidation of a mixture of 1-heptanol and 2-heptanol using commercial swimming pool chlorine. 1H NMR analysis of the product mixture allows the student to determine the selectivity exhibited by the reagent.

The O and early B star winds show empirical correlations between X-ray (L_x) and Bolometric (L_Bol) luminosity as well as wind properties such as wind momentum and wind kinetic energy. Wolf-Rayet stars do not. We discuss scaling relations to qualitatively explain this lack of correlation among the WR winds and to quantitatively reproduce the observed ratio of X-ray luminosities between the N-rich WN types and C-rich WC types. A magnetic field diagnostic of stellar winds that uses the Hanle effect is discussed. This diagnostic pertains to the modification of resonance-line-scattering polarization in the presence of magnetic fields. The case for resolved polarized profiles of optically thin emission lines is considered, and some analytic results for an expanding equatorial disk are derived. Numerical results for a dipole magnetic field embedded in a spherical outflow are also presented. Although the considerations are somewhat simplified, the primary conclusion is that the modification or creation of line profile polarization by the Hanle effect can be used to discriminate between different magnetic field …

Expressions are developed for the flux and polarization of radiation scattered by a spherically symmetric envelope for a central point stellar light source that radiates anisotropically. These are obtained in terms of the components of the spherical harmonics of the flux anisotropy from the source. Such anisotropy can arise from stellar spots, or from distortion of the star through rotation, pulsation, or magnetic effects. Explicit expressions for the Stokes parameters are obtained in the case of an ellipsoidal star of uniform surface brightness. It is thus shown that even when the scattering envelope is spherical, observationally significant polarization can arise …

This paper presents a novel niching algorithm, probabilistic crowding. Like its predecessor deterministic crowding, probabilistic crowding is fast, simple, and requires no parameters beyond that of the classical GA. In probabilistic crowding, subpopulations are maintained reliably, and we analyze and predict how this maintenance takes place.

This paper also identifies probabilistic crowding as a member of a family of algorithms, which we call integrated tournament algorithms. Integrated tournament algorithms also include deterministic crowding, restricted tournament selection, elitist recombination, parallel recombinative simulated annealing, the Metropolis algorithm, and simulated annealing.

The paper presents the pyrolysis and gasification processes of organic matter and the main directions of their use for the thermal disposal of hazardous waste. Used for this purpose the basic technical solutions are discussed with regard to existing and new technologies. Given the fact that the pyrolytic methods in Poland were primarily used for the incineration of medical waste, most attention was paid to a facility designated for such waste disposal. The problem of air pollutant emissions from this type of installation and some operating guidelines was also presented on the basis of the literature analyses and own research. …

The objective of this study was the research of novel and inexpensive sources of polysaccharides degrading enzymes such as amylases and glucanases from local plants in order to justify their biotechnological applications. The isolation of two l3-amylases and an endo-1,3-ß-D-glucanase was reached using common protein purification methods such as buffer extraction, ammonium sulfate fractionation, ionexchange and gel filtration chromatographies. The methods used were simple and easily reproducible, suggesting the possibilfty of large-scale production. ln the crude extract of Curculigo pilosa tuber, only ß-amylase was detected as starch degrading enzyme and its activity was approximately 282 Uig of fresh material. Studies of interventions that are intended to improve patients' health are often evaluated with survival as the primary outcome, even when a measure adjusted for quality of survival, such as years of healthy life (YHL), would seem more appropriate. The purpose of this article is to determine whether studies based on survival are more or less powerful than studies based on YHL in clinical trials where either measure might be appropriate. Recently we described the Common REactivity PAttern (COREPA) technique to screen data sets of diverse structures for their ability to serve as ligands for steroid hormone receptors [1]. The approach identi®es and quanti®es similar global and local stereoelectronic characteristics associated with active ligands through a comparison of energeticallyreasonable conformer distributions for selected descriptors. For each stereoelectronic descriptor selected, discrete conformer distributions from a training set of ligands are evaluated and parameter ranges common for conformers from all the chemicals in the training set are identi®ed. A new, facile, general one-phase synthesis for thiol-functionalized gold, palladium, and iridium nanoparticles, using tetrahydrofuran (THF) as the solvent and lithium triethylborohydride (Superhydride) as the reducing agent, is presented. For octadecanethiol-functionalized gold (Au/ODT) nanoparticles, HRTEM of drop-cast particle-films revealed the formation of spherical particles of d = 4 ± 0.3 nm average size. Electron diffraction shows fcc packing arrangement, similar to that of bulk gold. The crystalline gold cores are surrounded with closely packed n-alkyl chains mainly in an all-trans conformation, adopting orthorhombic packing as confirmed by FTIR spectroscopy. A group 14 atom bonded to three mesityl groups (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) and to one allyl group serves as a novel precursor to tricoordinate group 14 cations, the analogues of the carbocation. The double bond of the allyl group provides an accessible reaction site that is located beyond the ortho methyl groups. Reaction of various electrophiles with the double bond releases the allyl group and leads to formation of the group 14 cations. The mesityl groups then are of sufficient steric bulk to protect the tricoordinate metal center from attack by nucleophiles. This approach is used herein with silicon, germanium, and tin …
