Evaluating Quaternary Glacial Till Sheet Volume And Duration Of Grounding Events Using Sediment Flux Calculations In The Eastern Basin Paleotroughs, Ross Sea, Anarctica, Logan Gregory Kirst Jan 2013

Evaluating Quaternary Glacial Till Sheet Volume And Duration Of Grounding Events Using Sediment Flux Calculations In The Eastern Basin Paleotroughs, Ross Sea, Anarctica, Logan Gregory Kirst

LSU Master's Theses

A sequence of three seismically-resolvable, back-stepping grounding zone wedges (GZWs) within the Glomar-Challenger Basin paleo-ice-stream trough is conventionally interpreted to have been deposited by the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) since the end of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). For this to be true, there would have to have been voluminous GZW deposition via fast moving ice streams with high sediment flux during the short timeframe since the WAIS retreat began at 11 Ka 14C BP and when the WAIS moved south of Roosevelt Island at 3.2 Ka BP. In contrast to this interpretation of how the near-surface stratigraphy relates …

A Clay Mineral Provenance Study Of The Northern Pandora Trough Continental Margin, Gulf Of Papua, Ashley Len Howell Jan 2013

A Clay Mineral Provenance Study Of The Northern Pandora Trough Continental Margin, Gulf Of Papua, Ashley Len Howell

LSU Master's Theses

X-ray diffraction mineralogy of western-, central-, and eastern-derived fluvial sediments within the Gulf of Papua exhibits distinct and mixed clay mineral assemblages. These mineral assemblages allow for a better understanding of how a thick muddy continental margin shelf-edge depocenter in the eastern Gulf of Papua of latest Pleistocene/early Holocene age formed, as well as connections between terrestrial sediment delivery and evolution of deep-sea deposits in this region. Modern clay mineralogy reveals a high to low gradation of illite/smectite values from the western to eastern Gulf of Papua (Slingerland et al., 2008a), which is applied to the recent past for provenance …

Predicting Potential Unconventional Production In The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale Play Using Thermal Modeling And Log Overlay Analysis, Hunter Berch Jan 2013

Predicting Potential Unconventional Production In The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale Play Using Thermal Modeling And Log Overlay Analysis, Hunter Berch

LSU Master's Theses

The Tuscaloosa Marine Shale formation (TMS) of Central Louisiana and South Mississippi was suggested as a potential hydrocarbon play with up to seven billion barrels of reserves in a 1997 study by Louisiana State University’s Basin Research Institute. The TMS is considered an unconventional resource because it is a source, reservoir, and seal. Since 1997, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have enabled exploration and documentation of oil reserves in this play. Prior to this study, high resistivity log curves were used to predict areas of economic interest. While areas of high resistivity within the TMS are often indicative of high …

Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) time of flight mass spectrometry was used to identify shrimp at the species level using commercial mass spectral fingerprint matching software (Bruker Biotyper). In the first step, a mass spectrum reference database was constructed from the analysis of six shrimp species that are commercially important in the United States: L. setiferus, F. azticus, S. brevirostris, P. robustus, P. dispar and P. platyceros. In the second step, the reference database was tested using 74 unknown shrimp samples from these six species. Correct identification was achieved for 72 of the 74 samples (97 percent): 72 samples were …

An Analysis Of The Influences On Household-Level Adaptations To Environmental Hazards, Tiia Maria Carraway Jan 2013

An Analysis Of The Influences On Household-Level Adaptations To Environmental Hazards, Tiia Maria Carraway

LSU Master's Theses

Utilizing a randomized phone survey of coastal Louisiana residents, this study will focus on identifying which influences from a resident’s exposure, socio-economic vulnerability and adaptive capacity are the best indicators of an individual’s resilience. Two binary logistic regression models were developed to test the associations of resident response to: 1) acute hazards via household emergency plan adoption and 2) chronic hazards represented by behavior modification in response to daily air quality reporting where adoption of these two risk-reducing behaviors are viewed as increased individual resilience. Bivariate correlation analysis found that a north – south grouping of coastal Louisiana was significantly …

Some Effects Of Nutrient And Flooding Stress Manipulation On Coastal Louisiana Wetland Vegetation, James Stephen Ialeggio Jan 2013

Some Effects Of Nutrient And Flooding Stress Manipulation On Coastal Louisiana Wetland Vegetation, James Stephen Ialeggio

LSU Master's Theses

Freshwater diversions are a relatively recently utilized tool in wetland loss mitigation that stimulate an organic accretion response in marsh vegetation, which is based in root production and thus belowground biomass. The effectiveness of freshwater diversions in slowing marsh loss probably varies across a gradient of the factors they supply: decreased salinity, increased nutrient concentrations, and increased inundation. Flooding stress is commonly thought to be the overriding factor limiting wetland vegetation growth, however its influence may vary across salinity and nutrients. Therefore, plugs of Spartina patens were planted in four “marsh organs” consisting each of 36 sediment-filled PVC pipes of …

Simple And Fast Reconstruction Of 6 Mv Radiotherapy Doses To The Whole Body, Lydia Joyce Wilson Jan 2013

Simple And Fast Reconstruction Of 6 Mv Radiotherapy Doses To The Whole Body, Lydia Joyce Wilson

LSU Master's Theses

Background: State-of-the-art radiotherapy medical records include reliable estimates of the therapeutic radiation but are known to underestimate the stray radiation exposures by 40% away from the treatment field. Most commonly, stray radiation exposures are reconstructed using empirical formulas and/or lookup tables containing machine-specific dose measurements. The purpose of this study was to develop a physics-based model to calculate exposures to the whole body of patients who receive external beam photon radiotherapy. Methods: We developed a physics-based analytic algorithm to predict absorbed dose from therapeutic, scatter, and leakage radiation. The model includes separate terms to characterize photon production, attenuation, and scattering …

Bachman's Sparrow (Peucaea Aestivalis) Population Structure Across The Southeastern Usa, Blain Annette Cerame

LSU Master's Theses

Understanding gene flow and population structure in wildlife populations helps managers to protect distinct genetic lineages and genetic variation in small, isolated populations at high risk of extinction. I assessed genetic diversity in Bachman’s Sparrows (Peucaea aestivalis) to evaluate the role of natural barriers in shaping evolutionarily significant units as well as the effect of anthropogenically-caused habitat loss and fragmentation on population differentiation and diversity. Genetic diversity was assessed across the geographic range of Bachman’s Sparrow by genotyping 226 individuals at 18 microsatellite loci and sequencing 48 individuals at nuclear and mitochondrial DNA genes. Multiple analyses consistently demonstrated high levels …

Detection Of Interesting Traffic Accident Patterns By Association Rule Mining, Harisha Donepudi Jan 2013

Detection Of Interesting Traffic Accident Patterns By Association Rule Mining, Harisha Donepudi

LSU Master's Theses

In recent years, the accident rate related to traffic is high. Analyzing the crash data and extracting useful information from it can help in taking respective measures to decrease this rate or prevent the crash from happening. Related research has been done in the past which involved proposing various measures and algorithms to obtain interesting crash patterns from the crash records. The main problem is that large numbers of patterns were produced and vast number of these patterns would be obvious or not interesting. A deeper analysis of the data is required in order to get the interesting patterns. In …

Renewable Energy Across The 50 United States And Related Factors, Cynthia Brit Christenson Jan 2013

Renewable Energy Across The 50 United States And Related Factors, Cynthia Brit Christenson

LSU Master's Theses

Renewable energy production replaces diminishing non-renewable energy sources including fossil fuels. Major sources of renewable energy include biofuels, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar thermal and photovoltaic, wind, wood, and biomass. Greater use of renewable energy sources can fill gaps in energy as non-renewable sources are depleted, provide more energy independence at a state and national level, and help address climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from combustion of fossil fuels. The research objectives of this thesis are two-fold. First, which U.S. states are leaders in renewable energy production? Second, what factors may account for variation among U.S. states in levels of …

Effects Of Predator Reduction On Nest Success Of Upland Nesting Ducks In Low-Grassland Density Landscapes In Eastern North Dakota, Michael Buxton Jan 2013

Effects Of Predator Reduction On Nest Success Of Upland Nesting Ducks In Low-Grassland Density Landscapes In Eastern North Dakota, Michael Buxton

LSU Master's Theses

Nest success of upland nesting ducks is the primary driver of duck population growth in the Prairie Pothole Region. Nest success is greatly influenced by nest predation and the amount of available nesting cover on the landscape. The decline in acres enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in this region has negatively impacted the amount of available nesting cover, making nesting cover sparse and confined to small patches where predation rates are potentially elevated. I evaluated the efficacy of seasonal predator reduction on increasing nest success on low-grassland density (>10% grassland cover), 93 km2 landscapes in two different …

Inductivley Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy Analysis Of Heavy Metal Concentrations In Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia Patronus) Populations In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico From 2011 To 2012, Hannah Paula Rockett Jan 2013

Inductivley Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy Analysis Of Heavy Metal Concentrations In Gulf Menhaden (Brevoortia Patronus) Populations In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico From 2011 To 2012, Hannah Paula Rockett

LSU Master's Theses

In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill, released 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, creating the largest marine oil spill in the history of the U.S. petroleum industry. Trace metals, including those from crude oil, were dispersed in the water column and bound to suspended particulates. As obligate filter-feeding omnivores and a predominate fishery in the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf menhaden (Brevoortia patronus) are susceptible to trace metal accumulation. Samples of menhaden were collected at two locations in coastal Louisiana, Grand Isle (GI) and Vermillion Bay (VB), with VB serving as the non-impacted DWH oil …

Acoustic Biomass Of Fish Associated With An Oil And Gas Platform Before, During, And After "Reefing" It In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Grace Elizabeth Harwell Jan 2013

Acoustic Biomass Of Fish Associated With An Oil And Gas Platform Before, During, And After "Reefing" It In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Grace Elizabeth Harwell

LSU Master's Theses

With over ~2600 oil and gas platforms (platforms) remaining in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf), the Gulf States have access to one of the most unique fisheries in the world. Because of high abundances of game fishes around platform legs and the popular belief that platforms enhance fish stocks, both Louisiana and Texas have created artificial reef programs based upon the decommissioning of platforms. As oil and gas fields continue to be retired, oil and gas companies may find that “reefing” or toppling a platform may be a more economically viable alternative to complete removal of material. Questions remain …

Approximate Sequence Alignment, Xuanting Cai Jan 2013

Approximate Sequence Alignment, Xuanting Cai

LSU Master's Theses

Given a collection of strings and a query string, the goal of the approximate string matching is to efficiently find the strings in the collection, which are similar to the query string. In this paper, we focus on edit distance as a measure to quantify the similarity between two strings. Existing q-gram based methods use inverted lists to index the q-grams of the given string collection. These methods begin with generating the q-grams of the query string, disjoint or overlapping, and then merge the inverted lists of these q-grams. Several filtering techniques have been proposed to segment inverted lists in …

The Feasibility Of Using Vanadium And Nickel To Track Oil Spills In Coastal Environments, Sean Patrick Kenny Jan 2013

The Feasibility Of Using Vanadium And Nickel To Track Oil Spills In Coastal Environments, Sean Patrick Kenny

LSU Master's Theses

Crude oil has been increasing in world demand over the past century. It is known that oil is resistant to weathering processes and if spilled, can cause serious environmental damage to an area, on land or sea. A complementary approach to current methods of tracking oil and identifying spill-impacted sediments may be to measure trace metals associated with crude oil. Trace metals, such a vanadium (V) and nickel (Ni) are known to be elevated in concentration in some oil sources, but little work has been done on this topic. This research explored less expensive and time-consuming methods to track or …

Parallel Suffix Tree Construction For Genome Sequence Using Hadoop, Umesh Chandra Satish Jan 2013

Parallel Suffix Tree Construction For Genome Sequence Using Hadoop, Umesh Chandra Satish

LSU Master's Theses

Indexing the genome is the basis for many of the bioinformatics applications. Read mapping (sequence alignment) is one such application to align millions of short reads against reference genome. Several tools like BLAST, SOAP, BOWTIE, Cloudburst, and Rapid Parallel Genome Indexing with MapReduce use indexing technique for aligning short reads. Many of the contemporary alignment techniques are time consuming, memory intensive and cannot be easily scaled to larger genomes. Suffix tree is a popular data structure which can be used to overcome the demerits of other alignment techniques. However, constructing the suffix tree is highly memory intensive and time consuming. …

The Development Of An Ac Magneto- Optic Kerr Effect System For The Characterization Of Pulsed Laser Deposited Co₂Mnsi-Xal1-X Heusler Alloy Thin Films, Matthew Stephen Champagne

LSU Master's Theses

The Kerr rotation and Kerr ellipticity of thin films can be measured using an AC magneto-optic Kerr effect (AC-MOKE) system. The longitudinal MOKE measurements were taken for a series of Co2MnSixAl1-x thin films with values of x= 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.00. The films were fabricated using ultra high vacuum, pulsed laser deposition (PLD) techniques. The PLD targets were made using conventional arc-melting techniques. Using a Jones matrix analysis, it was shown that the Kerr rotation and Kerr ellipticity can be measured separately using two optical setups by taking advantage of a photoelastic modulator and lock-in techniques. Co2MnAl and Co2MnSi …

Predicting Mechanical Properties Of Southern Pine Lumber With Nondestructive Measurements, Jacob Romer Jan 2013

Predicting Mechanical Properties Of Southern Pine Lumber With Nondestructive Measurements, Jacob Romer

LSU Master's Theses

Predictive models were developed for stiffness and bending strength of southern pine 2x6, eight ft. lumber using nondestructive measurements of stresswave velocity, density and visual characteristics such as knots, slope of grain and rate of growth. To account for local areas of weakened material due to knots and slope of grain, a grid system was developed to quantify general knot size and location. Multiple regression models were created using these physical and visual measurements. Two sets of models were developed: one that removed influential samples with abnormal wavespeeds (greater than 18,000 ft./s) indicative of poor wood quality; and, models that …
