Status Of Feral Pigs In Kansas And Nebraska, Philip S. Gipson, Charles D. Lee, Sam Wilson, James R. Thiele, Deke Hobbick
Status Of Feral Pigs In Kansas And Nebraska, Philip S. Gipson, Charles D. Lee, Sam Wilson, James R. Thiele, Deke Hobbick
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Wild pigs have expanded their range markedly during the last 30 years. In Kansas feral pigs from domestic stock were first reported in 1994 on Fort Riley Army Base. During 2005, 2006, and 2007 the occurrence of reproducing wild pigs was confirmed on 18 sites throughout Kansas and 4 sites in Nebraska. One Nebraska population is in a county neighboring Kansas. Estimated numbers of pigs ranged from 8-10 individuals at each of 2 sites in Kansas to more than 30 on each of 3 other sites. The wild pig population in Kansas appears to be changing from 1 predominantly of …
Simulation Of Solute Movement Through Wellbores To Characterize Public Supply Well Contaminant Vulnerability In The High Plains Aquifer, York, Nebraska, Brian R. Clark, Matthew K. Landon, Leon J. Kauffman, George Z. Hornberger
Simulation Of Solute Movement Through Wellbores To Characterize Public Supply Well Contaminant Vulnerability In The High Plains Aquifer, York, Nebraska, Brian R. Clark, Matthew K. Landon, Leon J. Kauffman, George Z. Hornberger
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A ground-water flow and transport model simulating contaminant movement to public supply wells in the High Plains aquifer near York, Nebraska was developed as part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program. Water-quality samples were collected from wells screened in unconfined and confined units. Samples collected from a public supply well and selected monitoring wells completed in the confined aquifer have chemistry and age-tracer concentrations consistent with a mix of young water from unconfined recharge areas combined with relatively older confined aquifer water. These results imply that there are preferential flow paths that permit shallow recharge water and …
A Survey Of Security Issues In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yong Wang, Garhan Attebury, Byrav Ramamurthy
A Survey Of Security Issues In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yong Wang, Garhan Attebury, Byrav Ramamurthy
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are used in many applications in military, ecological, and health-related areas. These applications often include the monitoring of sensitive information such as enemy movement on the battlefield or the location of personnel in a building. Security is therefore important in WSNs. However, WSNs suffer from many constraints, including low computation capability, small memory, limited energy resources, susceptibility to physical capture, and the use of insecure wireless communication channels. These constraints make security in WSNs a challenge. In this article we present a survey of security issues in WSNs. First we outline the constraints, security requirements, and …
Spatial Correlation-Based Collaborative Medium Access Control In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mehmet C. Vuran, Ian F. Akyildiz
Spatial Correlation-Based Collaborative Medium Access Control In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mehmet C. Vuran, Ian F. Akyildiz
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are mainly characterized by dense deployment of sensor nodes which collectively transmit information about sensed events to the sink. Due to the spatial correlation between sensor nodes subject to observed events, it may not be necessary for every sensor node to transmit its data. This paper shows how the spatial correlation can be exploited on the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort which exploits spatial correlation in WSN on the MAC layer. A theoretical framework is developed for transmission regulation of sensor nodes under a distortion …

Exploiting Redundancy To Boost Performance In A Raid-10 Style Cluster-Based File System, Yifeng Zhu, Hong Jiang, Xiao Qin, Dan Feng, David Swanson
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
While aggregating the throughput of existing disks on cluster nodes is a cost-effective approach to alleviate the I/O bottleneck in cluster computing, this approach suffers from potential performance degradations due to contentions for shared resources on the same node between storage data processing and user task computation. This paper proposes to judiciously utilize the storage redundancy in the form of mirroring existed in a RAID-10 style file system to alleviate this performance degradation. More specifically, a heuristic scheduling algorithm is developed, motivated from the observations of a simple cluster configuration, to spatially schedule write operations on the nodes with less …

Use Of Sediment Rating Curves And Optical Backscatter Data To Characterize Sediment Transport In The Upper Yuba River Watershed, California, 2001–03, Jennifer A. Curtis, Lorraine E. Flint, Charles N. Alpers, Scott A. Wright, Noah P. Snyder
Publications of the US Geological Survey
Sediment transport in the upper Yuba River watershed, California, was evaluated from October 2001 through September 2003. This report presents results of a three-year study by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the California Ecosystem Restoration Program of the California Bay–Delta Authority and the California Resources Agency. Streamflow and suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) samples were collected at four gaging stations; however, this report focuses on sediment transport at the Middle Yuba River (11410000) and the South Yuba River (11417500) gaging stations. Seasonal suspended-sediment rating curves were developed using a group-average method and non-linear least-squares regression. Bed-load transport relations were used …

Publications of the US Geological Survey
This report presents geochemical data from two 2002 sampling campaigns conducted in Englebright Lake on the Yuba River in northern California. A deep coring campaign was done in May–June 2002 and a shallow sampling campaign was completed in October 2002. This work assessed the chemical composition of material deposited in the reservoir between 1940, the year Englebright Dam was completed, and 2002 as part of the Upper Yuba River Studies Program, an effort designed to evaluate the feasibility of introducing anadromous fish, including steelhead and spring-run Chinook salmon, upstream from Englebright Dam. Results of analyses of total mercury (HgT) in …
