Timing And Extent Of Late Quaternary Paleolakes In The Trans-Pecos Closed Basin, West Texas And South-Central New Mexico, David Wilkins, Donald Currey
David E. Wilkins
The Trans-Pecos Closed Basin is a hydrographically closed region covering 20,000 km centered on Salt Basin, 160 km east of El Paso, Texas. Geomorphic and limnetic evidence have been used to identify four major highstands for Lake King during the last glacial maximum (LGM). Additional geomorphic features from a second, recently identified, paleolake, Lake Sacramento, have been found in the Beargrass subbasin, a nested subbasin approximately 75 km northwest of Salt Basin. Radiocarbon ages of the organic material in Lake King sediments date four abrupt climate changes and rapid lacustrine transgressions during the LGM with a quasi-periodicity of 2000 yr. …

Ac-Mode Atomic Force Microscope Imaging In Air And Solutions With A Thermally Driven Bimetallic Cantilever Probe, Andrew C. Hillier, Allen J. Bard
Andrew C. Hillier
An ac imaging mode for atomic force microscopy ~AFM! has been developed that employs a thermally driven bimetallic cantilever to sense surface topography. Oscillations are induced in a composite cantilever, comprising a Si3N4 layer and Au overcoat, by local heating with a resistive wire heater placed in close proximity to the cantilever. Cantilever bending occurs upon heating due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the Si3N4 and Au layers. The magnitude of this bending is a function of the heat input, the cantilever geometry, the frequency of the excitation, and the thermal properties of the surrounding medium. A …

Correlated And Coherent States Of The Two-Dimensional Quantum Oscillator With A Nonstationary Mode Coupling, Mikhail E. Veisman, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Serge Youri Kalmykov
We investigate the squeezing and correlation phenomena of quantum fluctuations in correlated coherent states of a system of two oscillatory modes with a parametric coupling of the coordinates. In the regime of strong coupling between the modes, we discover an excitation and a strong correlation of the quantum fluctuations. The matrix of dispersions and covariances of the coordinates and momenta is found explicitly with the help of the method of the linear quantum integrals of motion.

A small number of bifunctional monomers are mixed with a nematic liquid crystal (LC) and cured with a distributed electric field, which is produced by a circular-hole-patterned electrode structure. A gradient type of lens, that is, a LC microlens, is investigated for various polymer concentrations. Addition of 3% polymer is enough to freeze the gradient-index properties of the structure in the form of a convex lens, and a polymer-stabilized LC microlens is demonstrated. Although a lower concentration of polymer cannot hold the distribution properties in a curing process, it can maintain the variable focus as a nematic material can. The …

Two-Photon Optogalvanic Spectra Of Argon: Odd Parity Rydberg States, Naveed Piracha, M. Baig, S. Khan, B. Suleman
Naveed K. Piracha
Extensive new data on the odd-parity, single-colour, two-photon optogalvanic spectra of argon in the visible region is reported using an excimer-pumped dye laser in conjunction with an argon discharge cell. The experimental technique enables us to record a pure two-photon spectrum in a region which is dominated by one-photon transitions. A large number of two-photon transitions, originating from the two metastable states [...] and [...] to the excited states of configurations [...] (J=0, 2) and [...] (J = 0 - 4) of argon, has been recorded and arranged into 10 Rydberg series. The interchannel interactions among the [...] and the …
Backward Stimulated Raman Scattering Of A Modulated Laser Pulse In Plasmas, Nikolai E. Andreev, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Backward Stimulated Raman Scattering Of A Modulated Laser Pulse In Plasmas, Nikolai E. Andreev, Serguei Y. Kalmykov
Serge Youri Kalmykov
The specific features of backward stimulated Raman scattering (BSRS) of a short modulated (multi-frequency) laser pulse in underdense plasmas are studied. The effect of resonant suppression of the BSRS of higher frequency pulse components is explored. For an arbitrary pair of pulse components, in the conditions of weak coupling, it is demonstrated that the backscattering of a higher frequency laser pulse component is a five-wave resonant process at a frequency difference between the components close to the double plasma frequency. In the conditions of strong coupling the backscattering of neither pulse component is suppressed and the spectrum of the instability …

Small Scale Electronic Transport In Diamond Microcrystals., M. Jaeger, S. Hyun, Anthony Day, M. Thorpe, B. Golding
Anthony Roy Day
The interpretation of electronic transport in polycrystalline diamond has proven difficult as a result of the disorder arising from physical and chemical inhomogeneities. We describe experimental methods, based on electron beam lithography, for studying transport in single crystallites grown by CVD on Si substrates. The electrical contacting process utilizes the flexibility of the scanning electron microscope to write metallic contacts to individual crystallites with lateral dimensions of a few μm. A detailed analysis of the current distribution in the crystals allows us to extract the electronic conductivity from arbitrarily shaped, faceted crystals.

Stiffness Of Measurement System And Significant Figures Of Displacement Which Are Required To Interpret Adhesional Force Curves, Nancy Burnham, Kunio Takahashi, Hubert Pollock, Tadao Onzawa
Nancy A. Burnham
Force curves obtained from an elastic contact theory are shown and compared with experimental results. In the elastic contact theory, a pin-on-disk contact is assumed and the following interaction are taken into consideration; (i) elastic deformation, (ii) the specific energy of adhesion in the area of the contact, which is expressed as the difference between the surface energies and the interface energy, (iii) the long-range interaction outside the area of contact, assuming the additivity of the Lennard-Jones type potential, and (iv) another elastic term for the measurement system such as the cantilever stiffness of an atomic force microscope (AFM). We show how to use recursive function theory to prove Turing universality of finite analog recurrent neural nets, with a piecewise linear sigmoid function as activation function. We emphasize the modular construction of nets within nets, a relevant issue from the software engineering point of view.

Many endohedral metallofullerenes have a C82 cage surrounding the metals, even though the normal arc-vaporization method of fullerene preparation does not generate C82 in significant abundance.1-10Manolopous et al.11-13attribute the low abundance of empty-cage C82 to the unfavorable electron configuration of this species. Consequently, the prevalence of C82 in metallofullerenes may be the result of an electron transfer from the encapsulated metal atoms to the fullerene cage.10-13 The extent of this charge transfer also contributes to the properties (e.g. catalytic, superconductive, nonlinear optical, and ferromagnetic) that are attributed to the endohedral metallofullerenes.14,15Because of the importance of the charge transfer reaction, characterization …

Thick films of polycrystalline GaN were grown at low pressures by direct reaction of atomic nitrogen with liquid Ga without the presence of a substrate. The crystals were confirmed to be wurtzitic GaN by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Photoluminescence spectra showed near band edge peaks and broad yellow band emission at both 298 and 10 K. The results show that atomic nitrogen is an attractive alternative to high pressure N2 for the saturation of liquid gallium with nitrogen for the synthesis of bulk GaN.

Reaction of Nb(OEt)5 with 2-mercapto-4-methylphenol (mmpH2) in the presence of triethylamine gave the mononuclear tris complex (Et3NH)[Nb(mmp)3] which was structurally characterized. The coordination geometry around the niobium is between octahedral and trigonal prismatic, with a twist angle of 41.5°. The mercaptophenolate ligands are arranged around the metal in a “propeller” fashion. (Et3NH)[Nb(mmp)3] was characterized by IR, 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and cyclic voltammetry. A reversible reduction wave found at −1.03 V is for reduction to the NbIV complex.

The North-Eastern region of India is significant for biodiversity conservation because of its floristic richness and high levels of endemism. Deforestation levels are high in the region due to anthropogenic pressures. We accessed various literature sources to create a database for Meghalaya state containing information on plant species, habit, altitudinal distribution, endemism, and endangered status. Information on the existing protected area network (type, extent, and altitudinal representation) was added to the database. The database was used to assess the effectiveness of the existing protected area network in conserving the floristic biodiversity of the state. Of a total of 3331 plant …

Bulk, polycrytalline gallium nitride was crystallized from gallium saturated with nitrogen obtained from a microwave electron cyclotron resonance source. The polycrystalline samples are wurtzitic and n-type. Well-faceted crystals give near-band-edge and yellow band photo-luminescence at both 10K and 300K. The results show that atomic nitrogen is an attractive alternative to high pressure molecular nitrogen for saturation of gallium with nitrogen for synthesis of bulk gallium nitride.

The voltammetry for a series of related endohedral metallofullerenes is reported. It is found that as additional metal atoms are inserted into the fullerene cage, the first reduction of the metallofullerenes shifts to more negative potentials. This is consistent with more charge being transferred to the fullerene cage from the additional metal atom; however, the magnitude of the shift is much smaller than expected.

Bulk polycrystalline gallium nitride and indium nitride were crystallized at sub-atmospheric pressures by saturating the pure metals with nitrogen from a microwave electron cyclotron resonance source. Saturation of Ga/In melts with nitrogen led only to the crystallization of gallium nitride. The polycrystralline samples were wurtzitic. The gallium nitride was well faceted, with narrow Raman lineshapes, and showed near-band-edge and yellow band photo-luminescence at both 4K and 300K. The indium nitirde was formed in smaller amounts, was less well faceted, and showed no photoluminescence.

Uniformly Adaptive Estimation For Models With Arma Errors, Douglas Steigerwald
Uniformly Adaptive Estimation For Models With Arma Errors, Douglas Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
A semiparametric estimator based on an unknown density is uniformly adaptive if the expected loss of the estimator converges to the asymptotic expected loss of the maximum likelihood estimator based on the true density (MLE), and if convergence does not depend on either the parameter values or the form of the unknown density. Without uniform adaptivity, the asymptotic expected loss of the MLE need not approximate the expected loss of a semiparamteric estimator for any finite sample. I show that a two-step semiparametric estimator is uniformly adaptive for the parameters of nonlinear regression models with autoregressive moving average errors.
