Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Alkali Metal Borides As Redox Active Anion Frameworks, Michael R. Shabetai Dec 2022

Synthesis And Electrochemical Characterization Of Alkali Metal Borides As Redox Active Anion Frameworks, Michael R. Shabetai

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Redox activity in intercalation cathodes is commonly attributed to changes in oxidation states of transition metal ions. Recently, a growing body of evidence revealed that the redox activity of oxygen contributes to the capacity of some known cathodes. We focused on designing an oxygen free intercalation cathode with redox-active anions. In order to overcome the entropic driving force for the decomposition of a charged redox active anion cathode, we looked for chemistries with solid (no gases) possible decomposition products. Additionally, the involvement of anions in a network of covalent bonds with shared electrons was considered as a possible way for …

Constraining The 30p(P,Γ)31s Reaction Using 30p(D,Pγ)31p With Goddess, Rajesh Ghimire Dec 2022

Constraining The 30p(P,Γ)31s Reaction Using 30p(D,Pγ)31p With Goddess, Rajesh Ghimire

Doctoral Dissertations

The 30P(p,γ)31S reaction acts as a bottleneck for classical nova nucleosynthesis beyond A=30 in ONe novae, due in part to the long lifetime of 30P (∼2.5 minutes) with respect to the timescale of a nova outburst. Also, the 30P(p,γ)31S reaction rate directly affects the isotopic ratio of 30Si/28Si, which is an important nova identifier in the analysis of pre-solar grains. O/S, S/Al, O/P, and P/Al elemental abundance ratios can be used as nuclear thermometers for classical novae by constraining the 30P(p,γ)31S reaction rate.

However, direct measurement of …

Development Of Raman Spectroscopic Methods For Detection Of Molecules Indicating Life In Extraterrestrial Environments, Grace Sarabia

Doctoral Dissertations

Mineral analysis is of great importance to the understanding of the world around us and worlds beyond. Geology, chemistry, and environmental studies all benefit from characterization of the structure and properties of minerals. While various techniques have been applied towards the study of minerals, we propose that Raman spectroscopy is specifically suited for the detection and study of minerals under various conditions, including for terrestrial and space applications.

In our terrestrial studies, we explored the polymorphs of calcium carbonate within freshwater mollusk shell matrices with Raman spectroscopy. We found that aragonite was the main calcium carbonate polymorph present in the …

Fitness Of Interspecific Hybrids In The Genus Cyprinella: An Evaluation Of Swimming Performance In North American Stream Fishes, Jessica Wilks

Biology Theses

Due to anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are being rapidly destroyed worldwide. Accordingly, human impacts have also resulted in the loss of native aquatic biodiversity. In particular, the introduction of non-native species to aquatic habitats is of great concern. Historically, the introductions of many non-native freshwater fishes are the result of commercial baitfish aquaculture, food industries, and private aquarium release. The red shiner (Cyprinella lutrensis) is a small stream fish that is endemic to the Central U.S., and its natural range is restricted to East of the Mississippi River. Since the 1950’s, red shiner have been commercially raised and transported …

Turning Ligands On Their Side: Computational Investigation Into The Binding Of N2o And N2 In Transition Metal Complexes, Cole Donald Dec 2022

Turning Ligands On Their Side: Computational Investigation Into The Binding Of N2o And N2 In Transition Metal Complexes, Cole Donald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Common greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) is a thermodynamically potent and environmentally benign oxidant, making it a desirable target for metal center activation. Unfortunately, N2O is a poor ligand for transition metals due to its weak sigma-donating and pi-accepting properties; as a result, few transition metal complexes capable of interacting with N2O have been found. As the primary source of all nitrogen in organisms, abundant gas dinitrogen (N2) is a crucially important tiny molecule and an essential part of daily existence. However, due to its inertness, it has limited practical uses in …

Bifurcations And Hysteresis In The Dynamics Of Small Populations Of Spherical Magnets, Peter T. Haugen Dec 2022

Bifurcations And Hysteresis In The Dynamics Of Small Populations Of Spherical Magnets, Peter T. Haugen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

If you heat up some kinds of metals and then cool them down next to a magnet, they will be a magnet when they cool, but if they cool down away from a magnet, they will just be a lump of metal. This is an example of hysteresis and it’s very important for lots of technology. Another example of hysteresis might be a water tower pump that turns on when the tower is nearly empty and keeps going until the tower is nearly full. Whether or not the pump is on when the tower is half full depends on what …

Serendipity Shape Function For Hybrid Fluid/Kinetic-Pic Simulations, Trevor V. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Sun in our solar system and stars are capable of generating enormous amounts of energy. The process by which these gaseous, celestial bodies are able to produce such large amounts of energy is called thermonuclear fusion. Fusion happens when particles collide with one another at energy levels high enough to overcome the Coulomb force and then release vast amounts of energy. Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is the natural state of stars. Plasma is an ionized gas that consists of negatively and positively charged particles. Stars, which have immense mass, can confine the plasma through their gravity to …

Quantifying The Magnitude Of Total Dose Deviation Caused By Various Sources Of Error Among Iroc Phantom Irradiation Results, Sharbacha S. Edward

Dissertations & Theses (Open Access)

The Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC) phantoms are used as an end-to-end test of an institution’s radiotherapy processes, and for clinical trial credentialing. Phantoms are treated like patients, and evaluation of the doses received by the thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) inside the phantom, reflects the accuracy with which an institution can image, plan and irradiate a phantom or patient. Recent phantom results show that among the hundreds of various IROC phantoms irradiated annually, 8-17% of institutions fail this test. The purpose of this work was to investigate the various types of errors that may occur during the treatment process and …

Time Series Classification With Multistage Modeling Using Deep Learning, James Arthur Dec 2022

Time Series Classification With Multistage Modeling Using Deep Learning, James Arthur

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Time series classification (TSC) can be efficiently implemented with several techniques. Many techniques are based on analyzing 1-D signals in the time series data. In this work, we make an intrinsic analytical implementation of a new time series classification that involves a two-stage process. Firstly, by using Recurrence Plots (RP), we transform the time series into 2D images. The second stage consists in taking advantage of deep learn- ing models to perform our classification. The image illustration of time series introduces different feature types that are not available for all 1D signals, and therefore our classifi- cation problem is treated …

Online/Incremental Learning To Mitigate Concept Drift In Network Traffic Classification, Alberto R. De La Rosa

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Communication networks play a large role in our everyday lives. COVID19 pandemic in 2020 highlighted their importance as most jobs had to be moved to remote work environments. It is possible that the spread of the virus, the death toll, and the economic consequences would have been much worse without communication networks. To remove sole dependence on one equipment vendor, networks are heterogeneous by design. Due to this, as well as their increasing size, network management has become overwhelming for network managers. For this reason, automating network management will have a significant positive impact. Machine learning and software defined networking …

Evaluation Of Effect Of Preprocessing Algorithms On Resting State Fmri Data, Hortencia Josefina Hernandez Dec 2022

Evaluation Of Effect Of Preprocessing Algorithms On Resting State Fmri Data, Hortencia Josefina Hernandez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Graph theory modeling is a common modeling approach in neurobiology research studies. These models are useful since they describe patterns of connection for regions of interest in the brain using resting state fMRI images. The standard rule of thumb is to threshold the observed activation levels prior to model building. It is reasonable to assume that the use of this threshold affects the statistical distribution of commonly reported centrality metrics from the graph theory model, such as degree, betweenness, and closeness. In this study we examine the differential effect of using the standard approaches versus alternative direct thresholds and incorporation …

Application Of Flo-Sic To F-Electron Systems: Sixth Row Elements And Ligated Molecules, Alexander Irun Johnson Dec 2022

Application Of Flo-Sic To F-Electron Systems: Sixth Row Elements And Ligated Molecules, Alexander Irun Johnson

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Density functional theory - the most widely used theoretical method to study atoms, molecules, and solids - suffers from the well-known self-interaction error. A solution to the problem was suggested by Perdew and Zunger [1], who showed the self-interaction error can be removed with self-interaction correction. In 2014, Pederson showed a unitary transformation can be performed on the Kohn-Sham orbitals to generate Fermi-Löwdin orbitals which improve atomization energies, and avoid the computational costs of solving the localization equations.[2] This method is known as the Fermi-Löwdin Orbital Self-Interaction Correction (FLO-SIC). Until now, the FLO-SIC methodology has been used for atoms not containing …

Modulation Of Non-Diffracting Hermite Gaussian Beams And Nonlinear Optical Microscopy For Nanoscale Sulfur Imaging, Gilberto Navarro

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Hermite Gaussian beams are the solutions of the scalar paraxial wave equation in Cartesian coordinates. A method was developed to modulate the intensity profile of non-diffracting Hermite Gaussian (HG) beams. The original HG beamâ??s intensity profile consists of high intense corner lobes and low intense central lobes which is not ideal for structured illumination in light-field microscopy. The modulated HG beams were generated by multiplying the original HGâ??s beam envelope by a super-Gaussian envelope to modify the intensity profile to attain equal intensity lobes. The propagation of the original HG beam and modulated HG beam were compared to determine that …

Analyzing And Quantifying The Impact Of Software Diversification On Return-Oriented Programming (Rop) Based Exploits, David Reyes

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

With the implementation of modern software mitigation techniques such: as Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR), stack canaries, and the No-Execute bit (N.X.), attackers can no longer achieve arbitrary code execution simply by injecting shellcode into a vulnerable buffer and redirecting execution to this vulnerable buffer. Instead, attackers have pivoted to Return Oriented Programming (ROP) to achieve the same arbitrary code execution. Using this attack method, attackers string together ROP gadgets, assembly code snippets found in the target binary, to form what are known as ROP Chains. Using these ROP Chains, attackers can achieve the same malicious behavior as previous code …

It is crucial to employ security measures within ICS that do not add to the network complexity as this effects …

A Study Of Electron Plasma Oscillations Using The Nimrod Code, Mckay Murphy Dec 2022

A Study Of Electron Plasma Oscillations Using The Nimrod Code, Mckay Murphy

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

A plasma, whether ”hot” or ”cold,” magnetized or unmagnetized, electrostatic or electromagnetic, exhibits normal modes of oscillation. Critical to understanding the stability of a plasma is the study of these normal modes. Waves originate from the long-range electric interactions between charged particles. This work will consider a class of waves known as Langmuir waves. These waves occur when a group of electrons are displaced with respect to the ions, with the electric Coulomb force playing the role of the restoring force of the oscillation [1]. Since the mass of ions is much greater than that of electrons, we can approximate …

Decision Making Under Uncertainty With A Special Emphasis On Geosciences And Education, Laxman Bokati

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In many practical situations, we need to make a decision. In engineering, we need to decideon the best design of a system, and, for existing systems - on the best control strategy. In financial applications, we need to decide what is the best way to invest money. In geosciences, we need to decide whether we should explore a possible mineral deposit - or whether we should perform more experiments and measurements (and what exactly). In some cases, we can compute the exact consequences of each decision - e.g., if we are controlling a satellite. However, in many other cases, we …
