Intuitive Concepts In Elementary Topology, Gary Rothwell
Intuitive Concepts In Elementary Topology, Gary Rothwell
Honors Theses
My hour special study in intuitive topology originated in a curiosity of what exactly topology was and how it might be related to physics, my field of interest. The book I used was, Intuitive Concepts in Elementary Topology, by B.H. Arnold. This book is designed as a sophomore-junior level three hour course. Needless to say, I didn't quite cover the whole book in an hour a week. I mainly stuck to the intuitive concepts. Intuitive topology is dealing with more physical objects where the point set topology involves set theory; their unions, intersections and subsets.
The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper
The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper
Theses and Dissertations
Irrigation has played an important part in the development of the Western States. Its beginnings have often been associated with the Mormon settlement in Utah. However, irrigation had its inception in the West long before the Mormons came to the Great Basin in 1847. The spatial extent of irrigation before this date included limited acreage in nearly every Western State.
Before their arrival in the Great Basin the Mormons had become acquainted with irrigation methods. Knowledge of irrigation had diffused to them primarily from the Spanish in the Southwest. Thus, they were well prepared to begin their irrigation enterprises in …

Heat Transfer Across Carbon-Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos
Heat Transfer Across Carbon-Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos
Dissertations and Theses
The subject to be discussed in this thesis is an experimental problem in heat transfer across a carbon-liquid helium I interface. The interest in this particular problem arose from experimental work first presented by Luce (1) concerning a similar heat transfer problem from a heated bismuth surface immersed in liquid helium. This study produced some interesting results which it was hoped could be duplicated with carbon. The choice of carbon as an alternative material was based on reasons which will be discussed later. Before beginning a detailed discussion of the problem a history of its development and the results which …
Three Papers In Mathematical Logic, Henry P. Miranda '74
Three Papers In Mathematical Logic, Henry P. Miranda '74
Fenwick Scholar Program
Three papers were written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Fenwick Scholar Program 1973-1974:
An Algebraic Proof of the Completeness of Sentential Logic proves the completeness of sentential logic using concepts of Boolean structures.
Godel's Proof of the Incompleteness of Axiomatic Number Theory discusses Godel's Incompleteness Theorem as a landmark in the Foundations of Mathematics which has meaning for mathematicians, logicians, and philosophers alike.
The Independence of the Continuum Hypothesis discusses the nature of independence proofs and briefly describes the boolean valued logic used to obtain the independence results.

The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding
The Water Quality And Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna Of Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, Paul Barding
Masters Theses
The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna and 15 water quality parameters for five sites on Lake Charleston, Coles County, Illinois were examined for 26 weeks from March 14 through September 5, 1974. None of the water quality parameters studied showed sufficient deviations at any particular area on the lake to merit demarcated water quality zonation. The lake, with its continuous mixing and shallow depth, represented a fairly stable and continuous environment. The benthic macroinvertebrate fauna was determined as fairly diverse and some indication of seasonal variation was apparent. No significant compositional variation over different areas of the lake was found, also indicating …
Rate Of Growth As A Method Of Assessing Water Quality, George L. Johnston
Rate Of Growth As A Method Of Assessing Water Quality, George L. Johnston
Masters Theses
A study of the Embarras River basin was conducted to determine if rate of growth could be used as an indicator of water quality. Six species of sucker were collected from five locations using hand seines and electrofishing gear from December 1970 to December 1971. Tests of eighteen water quality parameters were conducted from November 1970 to November 1971.
The fish were measured and scale samples taken. The rate of growth of the fish taken at the five stations was analyzed and compared using the single classification analysis of variance. Condition factors were also compared.
Although there was some difference …
Conodonts Of The Mecca Quarry Shale, Timothy Charles O'Neill
Conodonts Of The Mecca Quarry Shale, Timothy Charles O'Neill
Masters Theses
Conodonts were found to be abundant in the Middle Pennsylvanian, Mecca Quarry Shale, Parke County, Indiana. Nine forms were identified in this black fissile shale from a locality along Montgomery Creek near the town of Mecca. These elements are: Hindeodella parva, Idiognathodus delacatus, Gondolella sp. a, Ozarkodina delacatula, Lonchodina clarki, Ligonodina typa, Lonchodus simplex, Metalonchodina bidentata, and Neoprioniodus conjunctus.
Ratios of elements to each other were determined and used to arrive at an idea of what conodont assemblages were present. At least three asemblages are presented; Scottognathus, Duboisella, and Illinella …
Metal Promoted Reactions Of Enamino Ketones, Suhas Satchidanand Joshi
Metal Promoted Reactions Of Enamino Ketones, Suhas Satchidanand Joshi
Masters Theses
The reaction of 4-amino-3-allyl-3-penten-2-one (7) with mercuric acetate in acetic acid was found to produce 4-amino-1-pentene (12) in 70% yield. The scope of this unusual cleavage reaction was investigated by systematic variation of substituents on the enamino ketone framework, the metal salt and the solvent. The presence of the allyl group was necessary for the reaction to produce compound 12.
Under a variety of conditions there was no evidence for cyclization of 7 to give heterocyclic compounds. Neither was there evidence for cyclization in reactions of 4-amino-3-penten-2-one with vinyl acetate in the presence of mercury (II) or thallium (III) salts …
Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp
Pesticide Effects In A Simulated Soil Ecosystem, Raymond J. Samp
Masters Theses
The screening of pesticides to determine which were most inhibitory to bacteria was accomplished by testing the effects of 10 pesticides on 9 different organisms using the disk assay method. Results showed that Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive to all pesticides tested than were the Gram negative bacteria. In addition, the hormone herbicides were found to be the most inhibitory to these bacteria and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a hormone herbicide, was chosen for subsequent in vivo studies.
A soil perfusion apparatus was used to determine the effects of 2,4-D in a typical soil ecosystem. Bacterial plate counts and nutrient …
The Physical And Petrographic Characteristics Of Formcoke Produced Experimentally From Lignite And Subbituminous Coal, Bruce L. Ramsey
The Physical And Petrographic Characteristics Of Formcoke Produced Experimentally From Lignite And Subbituminous Coal, Bruce L. Ramsey
Theses and Dissertations
Formcoke was produced experimentally from a North Dakota lignite and a Wyoming subbituminous coal. The effect of initial charring tem perature (600°C or 900°C), of char grain size (less than 18 mesh, less than 35 mesh, or less than 60 mesh), of briquetting pressure (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000, 9000 or 10,000 psi) of binder percentage (5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 per cent), and of final carbonization heating rate (18°C/:min, 12°C/min or 6°C/min) on formcoke briquet com pressive strength was studied.
A final carbonization heating rate of 6°C/min produced uniform shape briquets. Rates of 12°C/min and …

A Mechanical Well Log Study Of The Popular Interval Of The Mississippian Madison Formation In North Dakota, C. W. Cook
A Mechanical Well Log Study Of The Popular Interval Of The Mississippian Madison Formation In North Dakota, C. W. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
The Poplar interval of interbedded evaporites and carbonates forms the uppermost part of the Mississippian Madison Forr.1ation in western North Dakota. A detailed mechanical well log study of the Poplar interval in North Dakota was conducted to interpret the Poplar's regional geology and to attempt to locate areas with potential for petroleum production. Limestone, dolomite, anhydrite and salt were differentiated using mechanical well logs.
The complex facies of the Madison are subdivided into para-time rock units (the Poplar interval is one) on the basis of extensive thin anhydrite beds which are considered time-parallel.
The base of the Poplar interval is …
The Foraminiferids Of The Cannonball Formation (Paleocene, Danian) And Their Paleoenvironmental Significance : Grant, Morton And Oliver Counties, North Dakota, William E. Fenner
The Foraminiferids Of The Cannonball Formation (Paleocene, Danian) And Their Paleoenvironmental Significance : Grant, Morton And Oliver Counties, North Dakota, William E. Fenner
Theses and Dissertations
Two hundred-forty samples (of which fifty-five contained micro fossils) were collected from six measured sections in the Cannonball Formation (Paleocene, Danian) in Grant, Morton and Oliver Counties, North Dakota. Twenty-six species of benthonic foraminiferids were identified from these samples: 6 textulariines, 2 miliolines and 18 rotaliines. No planktonic foraminiferids were found. The fauna is characterized by a predominance of individuals of textulariines, especially the lituolids. Although the Cannonball Formation is characterized by an alternating sequence of sandstones and mudstones> the foraminiferid fauna was restricted to the mudstone facies in the upper and upper-middle part of the formation. Two characteristic assemblages …

Paleontology Of Brackish-Water Faunas In Two Tongues Of The Cannonball Formation (Paleocene, Danian), Slope And Golden Valley Counties, Southwestern North Dakota, James B. Van Alstine
Theses and Dissertations
In June and July, 1972, four stratigraphic sections were mea sured and described in Slope and Golden Valley Counties, southwestern North Dakota. Within the sections, the Cannonball and Ludlow Formations are recognized. The Cannonball consists of two tongues in the upper part of the Ludlow (perhaps equivalent to the Lebo Member), separated stratigraphically by about 30 roof Ludlow. The U tongue (upper tongue in the study area) is up to 11. 7 m thick. The L tongue (lower tongue. in the study area) is up to 3.8 m thick. The Cannonball is composed mostly of mudstones and the Ludlow consists …
