Verification Of The Vertical Bubble Flow Experiments, Reginald Jones Ii
Verification Of The Vertical Bubble Flow Experiments, Reginald Jones Ii
Theses and Dissertations
Detailed experimental design to support basic pedagogy of flow regimes – single phase liquid, bubbly, slug, annular, dispersed droplet, and single phase vapor – occurring in flow channels of nuclear reactors has been developed for EGMN 203 - Nuclear Engineering Practicum offering at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. The laboratory instruction will be used to help students forming ideas and understanding flow regimes occurring in nuclear engineering applications. We designed and constructed four water columns to act as surrogates for water channels in a nuclear reactor. Each column was used for a different experiment: salted versus …
Regional Drivers Of Organic Carbon Age In Lotic Systems Of The Conterminous United States, Kaycee Faunce
Regional Drivers Of Organic Carbon Age In Lotic Systems Of The Conterminous United States, Kaycee Faunce
Theses and Dissertations
Rivers play a critical role in global carbon (C) budgets despite their comparatively small surface area. A significant portion of the terrestrial C that they receive is transformed, re-mineralized, or stored during transit to the ocean. Radiocarbon (∆14C) data show that a fraction of riverine organic C (OC) has been pre-aged in the terrestrial environment. Lateral export of carbon from these aged pools may contribute to atmospheric carbon dioxide emissions through microbial and photochemical oxidation. However, little is known about the regional climatic, anthropogenic, and landscape factors that promote the mobilization of aged OC to rivers. This study …
Leveraging Peer-To-Peer Energy Sharing For Resource Optimization In Mobile Social Networks, Aashish Dhungana
Leveraging Peer-To-Peer Energy Sharing For Resource Optimization In Mobile Social Networks, Aashish Dhungana
Theses and Dissertations
Mobile Opportunistic Networks (MSNs) enable the interaction of mobile users in the vicinity through various short-range wireless communication technologies (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi) and let them discover and exchange information directly or in ad hoc manner. Despite their promise to enable many exciting applications, limited battery capacity of mobile devices has become the biggest impediment to these appli- cations. The recent breakthroughs in the areas of wireless power transfer (WPT) and rechargeable lithium batteries promise the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy sharing (i.e., the transfer of energy from the battery of one member of the mobile network to the battery of …
Applications Of Dynamic Linear Models To Random Allocation Models, Albert H. Lee Iii
Applications Of Dynamic Linear Models To Random Allocation Models, Albert H. Lee Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Although advances in modern computational algorithms have provided researchers the ability to work problems which were once too computationally complex to solve, problems with high computation or large parameter spaces still remain. Problems such as those involving Time Series can be such problems. Chapter 1 looks at the the use of Exponentially Weighted Moving Averages developed by \citep{holt2004forecasting, winters1960forecasting} which were thought to provide sufficient solutions to these Time Series. A discussion is provided which illustrates the shortcomings of the EWMA and how its infinite number of possible starting values provides the modeler with an endless number of possible solutions …
Mechanistic Study Of C-H Activation By Iridium Complexes, Rozalie S G Corea
Mechanistic Study Of C-H Activation By Iridium Complexes, Rozalie S G Corea
Theses and Dissertations
C-H activation is considered the “holy grail” of chemistry. Remote, selective C-H activation has many applications such as modifying precursors, adding complexity to molecules, and modifying pre- existing structures in a reduced number of steps. Previous work by Swift and Gronert identified an iridium(III) phenanthroline complex that can activate C-H bonds of cyclohexane. The objective of this dissertation is to study the mechanism and regioselectivity of this complex in common precursors, namely 1-butanol, 1-methoxybutane and butyl acetate.
The studies were carried out in the gas phase on a modified mass spectrometer. Selectively deuterated alcohol, ether and ester were used to …
Phenotype Extraction: Estimation And Biometrical Genetic Analysis Of Individual Dynamics, Kevin L. Mckee
Phenotype Extraction: Estimation And Biometrical Genetic Analysis Of Individual Dynamics, Kevin L. Mckee
Theses and Dissertations
Within-person data can exhibit a virtually limitless variety of statistical patterns, but it can be difficult to distinguish meaningful features from statistical artifacts. Studies of complex traits have previously used genetic signals like twin-based heritability to distinguish between the two. This dissertation is a collection of studies applying state-space modeling to conceptualize and estimate novel phenotypic constructs for use in psychiatric research and further biometrical genetic analysis. The aims are to: (1) relate control theoretic concepts to health-related phenotypes; (2) design statistical models that formally define those phenotypes; (3) estimate individual phenotypic values from time series data; (4) consider hierarchical …
The Design Of A New Vaginal Applicator For Direction Modulated Brachytherapy (Dmbt) Using Geant4 Monte Carlo Simulation Code, Moeen Meftahi
The Design Of A New Vaginal Applicator For Direction Modulated Brachytherapy (Dmbt) Using Geant4 Monte Carlo Simulation Code, Moeen Meftahi
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: Anisotropy of the 192Ir source causes a lack of dose coverage at the apex in HDR vaginal cylinder brachytherapy (VC BT). In this study, we took advantage of the GEANT4 Monte Carlo (MC) simulation code to design a new DMBT vaginal applicator so that it maintains the dose coverage of the current vaginal cylinder at periphery everywhere while improving the apex coverage. In addition, since current treatment planning systems (TPS) considers the whole environment as water according to TG43 formalism, based on the capability of the MC in the calculation of dose in the material, the effect of inhomogeneity …
Synthesis Of Supported Metal Nanoparticles On High Surface Area Supports For Application In Energy Conversion And Heterogeneous Catalysis, Nazgol Norouzi
Synthesis Of Supported Metal Nanoparticles On High Surface Area Supports For Application In Energy Conversion And Heterogeneous Catalysis, Nazgol Norouzi
Theses and Dissertations
Precise control of metal nanoparticles’ size, composition, and dispersity over high surface area supports are highly desirable to address current challenges in energy storage and conversion as well as catalytic processes involving precious metals. Therefore, developing viable synthetic routes that enable new catalytic systems derived from inexpensive transition metals or limited use of precious metals is vital for clean energy applications such as fuel cells and rechargeable batteries or affordable drugs in the pharmaceuticals arena. In addition to metal components of heterogeneous catalysts, the catalyst support is an integral part of catalyst design as it can impart both physical stability …
Metal-Oxide Nanostructures Fabricated From Reactive Laser Ablation In Liquid, Mallory G. John
Metal-Oxide Nanostructures Fabricated From Reactive Laser Ablation In Liquid, Mallory G. John
Theses and Dissertations
The development of metal-oxide nanostructures is a growing area due to their applications in diverse fields spanning energy conversion and storage, chemical manufacturing, and en- vironmental technology. This interest in catalytically active nanomaterials has prompted the synthesis and investigation of highly functionalized nanoparticles (NPs), including core- shell, silicate-stabilized, and bi- and multi-metallic nanocomposites. While wet-chemical synthesis methods of metal-oxide nanostructures have led to several morphologies, compositions, and shapes, these syntheses often require high temperatures, toxic solvents or reducing agents, and long reaction times.
Laser synthesis and processing of colloids (LSPC) encompasses both ‘top down’ and ‘bottom up’ approaches to synthesize …
Comparing Coastal Storm Impact To Decadal Change In Barrier Island Ecosystems, Philip A. Tuley
Comparing Coastal Storm Impact To Decadal Change In Barrier Island Ecosystems, Philip A. Tuley
Theses and Dissertations
Highly dynamic coastal systems respond to disturbance events with a combination of topographic and vegetative changes. Sea level rise impacts on barrier islands have been quantified, but storm effects on vegetation are limited. Here we quantified barrier island vegetation change in response to an isolated storm event and compared to long-term periods. We hypothesized that disturbance-resisting areas with high woody vegetation cover and/or high foredune elevation would experience minimal transitions after a storm event, whereas disturbance-reinforcing areas with low vegetation cover and low foredune elevation would experience greater transitions between ecosystem states after a storm event. Patterns of dissonance were …

Probing Vibrational Wave Packets In Organophoshorous Molecules Using Femtosecond Time-Resolved Mass Spectrometry (Ftrms), Derrick Ampadu Boateng
Theses and Dissertations
The study of organophosphorus and nitroaromatic compounds is essential due to their suitability as models for understanding the dynamics of radiation induce damage to DNA sugar-phosphate backbone, and the detection of chemical warfare agents as well as nitroaromatic explosives (such as TNT). The ultrafast dynamics of these polyatomic radicals were studied using femtosecond time-resolved mass spectrometry (FTRMS), a versatile method that is capable of monitoring the ultrafast dynamics of rapid dissociation in the gas phase after the removal of an electron. The method uses a technique called pump-probe, which makes use of two time-delayed laser pulses. In this work, the …
Interaction, Collaboration And Content Creation In Informal Online Learning Environments: Multidimensional Analyses Of Longitudinal Data From The Scratch Coding Community, Seung B. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
Despite rising levels of participation by children and adolescents in large, informal online learning communities, there has been limited research examining the role that social dynamics play on the online behavior of young users. In this context, this mixed-methods longitudinal study aimed to investigate the relationship between interaction, collaboration and content creation through the analysis of user-generated comments and log-data from the Scratch platform. The research focused on more than 45,000 comments associated with the online activity of 200 randomly selected participants over a period of three months in early 2012. A combination of methodological techniques was applied in the …
