Despite highly trained healthcare professionals being readily available to respond to In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (IHCA), a patient experiencing an IHCA often remains a devastating event for the patient. Each year in America, 13.5% of all deaths result from sudden cardiac arrest. Even with healthcare professionals certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), the survival rates following an IHCA are not inspiring. The median survival rate to hospital discharge of an adult experiencing IHCA is 26.4% and 49.5% for the pediatric population. Becoming a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) involves didactic and clinical course work that challenges the student’s cognitive, mental, and emotional well-being. Standardized cognitive factors, such as grade point average, are utilized for nurse anesthesia program admission, but those factors do not take into account the student’s emotional intelligence. The ability to manage one’s emotions has a positive correlation with academic success (Beauvais, Stewart, DeNisco, & Beauvais, 2014) and has been correlated with greater success in nurse anesthesia programs (Collins, 2013).

This quality improvement project was designed to increase staff adherence to an existing Pitocin titration protocol used in a labor and delivery unit at a community hospital. In the current U.S. health care climate, safe patient care is paramount and the Institute for Safe Medication Practices identified Pitocin as a high-alert medication. Evidence-based practice recommends the use of a titration protocol to guide proper use of Pitocin. Immunizations have been proven to control life-threatening diseases. Often Registered Nurses (RNs) administer vaccines but are unsure how to discuss vaccines with vaccine hesitant patients. Missouri’s adolescent vaccination rates are below its neighboring states. This initiative’s purpose was to increase adolescent vaccine administrations at a Missouri County Health Department (MCHD).

This quality improvement initiative had an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive design. Purpose: The obstetric hemorrhage rate has risen steadily in the U.S. accounting for 11.4% of maternal deaths between 2011 and 2013, and remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity. Improving the quality and safety of care could prevent much of the morbidity and potential mortality associated with obstetric hemorrhages. An interprofessional obstetric team developed, tested, and implemented obstetric hemorrhage and massive transfusion protocols. Multi-modal team training occurred before service-wide implementation of the protocols, including didactic, skills stations, on-line educational modules, and in situ simulation team training. Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) rates have steadily increased in hospitalized patients due to the change in epidemiology. Approximately 13 of every 1,000 inpatients are either infected or colonized with C. difficile (CDC, 2013). CDI rates continue to rise due to the hyper-virulent strain of C. difficile and length of therapy needed to treat CDI. The average cost for a single inpatient CDI is more than $35,000, and the estimated annual cost burden for the healthcare system exceeds $3 billion (Walsh, 2012). Patient/visitor violence against healthcare (HC) employees is a type of workplace violence (WPV) and considered a dangerous hazard within HC occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Lack of recognition of the true incidence and underreporting of WPV may contribute to a false sense of security within a HC facility (HCF). The long-term goal of this project was to develop a curriculum for a formal institutional leadership workshop for the charge nurses at the practicum site. The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice model and Lewin's change theory were used to guide the development and implementation of the workshop.
