The Social And Religious Designs Of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, Michael Marissen Jan 1995

The Social And Religious Designs Of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, Michael Marissen

Music Faculty Works

This new investigation of the Brandenburg Concertos explores musical, social, and religious implications of Bach's treatment of eighteenth-century musical hierarchies. By reference to contemporary music theory, to alternate notions of the meaning of "concerto," and to various eighteenth-century conventions of form and instrumentation, the book argues that the Brandenburg Concertos are better understood not as an arbitrary collection of unrelated examples of "pure" instrumental music but rather as a carefully compiled and meaningfully organized set. It shows how Bach's concertos challenge (as opposed to reflect) existing musical and social hierarchies. Careful consideration of Lutheran theology and Bach's documented understanding of …

Signature-Systems And Tonal Types In The Fourteenth-Century French Chanson, Peter M. Lefferts Jan 1995

Signature-Systems And Tonal Types In The Fourteenth-Century French Chanson, Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Beyond the standard and familiar theoretical instruction materials on notation and mensuration, on mode and hexachord, and on the rules of two-part counterpoint, information and insight about the techniques of musical composition in the later Middle Ages are hard to come by. From a modern vantage point, medieval music theory leaves many of the questions most interesting to us unanswered. And for our part, too, analysts of chansons and motets have yet to agree on many basic notions about how this music works, and therefore what is most necessary to talk about. It is symptomatic of this state of affairs …

I Légong Mantra (Bali) II Odalisque (Persia) III Sarang Ga (Korea) After living in Bali for several years the Canadian-born composer Colin McPhee once wrote “...what a marvelous thing would be a concert made up of new works by composers whose names were not included in the program.” This somewhat enigmatic statement reflected the crisis in his creative life caused by his encounter with Balinese music and concurrently his dissatisfaction with the uniquely Western European, ego-driven emphasis on “free” composition and innovation. Most of McPhee’s later music was either influenced by or transcriptions of Balinese Gamelan music. In a similar, …

Frederic Rzewski And Spontaneous Political Music, Christian T. Asplund Jan 1995

Frederic Rzewski And Spontaneous Political Music, Christian T. Asplund

Faculty Publications

I am intrigued by Frederic Rzewski's ability, in his pieces from the 1960s and 70s, to model socio-political phenomena and to teach specific lessons about these phenomena on both intuitive and intellectual levels to both performers and listeners. Performers in particular will literally experience these socio-political phenomena in the course of performing these pieces. Rzewski seems to have achieved Brecht's ideal of a gestic music without dryness or lack of credibility.

Recognition Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Melodies In Normal Aging And Alzheimers-Disease, James C. Bartlett, Andrea R. Halpern, W. Jay Dowling Jan 1995

Recognition Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Melodies In Normal Aging And Alzheimers-Disease, James C. Bartlett, Andrea R. Halpern, W. Jay Dowling

Faculty Journal Articles

We tested normal young and elderly adults and elderly Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients on recognition memory for tunes. In Experiment 1, AD patients and age-matched controls received a study list and an old/new recognition test of highly familiar, traditional tunes, followed by a study list and test of novel tunes. The controls performed better than did the AD patients. The controls showed the ''mirror effect'' of increased hits and reduced false alarms for traditional versus novel tunes, whereas the patients false-alarmed as often to traditional tunes as to novel tunes. Experiment 2 compared young adults and healthy elderly persons using …

The Tristan Chord In Historical Context: A Response To John Rothgeb, William Rothstein Jan 1995

The Tristan Chord In Historical Context: A Response To John Rothgeb, William Rothstein

Publications and Research

John Rothgeb’s analysis of the “Tristan chord” engages a large intertextual network, stretching back to the Baroque and centering on recitative. Examples of a specific figure of recitative, usually associated with the asking of a question, are presented and analyzed. Examples include passages in Wagner's operas before Tristan.

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1995

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on popular music written and produced by Singaporeans to illustrate the nature of social relationships based on ideological hegemony and resistance. Analysis is based on two groups of music: 'national' songs supported by the government in the 'Sing Singapore' programme; and songs brought together in Not the Singapore song book. Interviews with local lyricists and analysis of video productions provide supplementary information. Music is used by the ruling elite to perpetuate certain ideologies aimed at political socialization and to inculcate a civil religion that directs favour and fervour towards the nation. Music is also a form of …
