People have always been both frightened and fascinated by the unknown, and themes touching on the existence of things beyond human understanding have longevity in the literary arena as well as in popular culture. One such theme is that of the doppelgänger, or double, which has been around for centuries but was first made popular by Jean-Paul’s (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter) work Hesperus in 1795. The study of Literature was once the cornerstone of a creative writer's training, but lost significance when creative writing workshops became the pedagogical vehicle of choice. Online instruction provides technological and logistical advantages that bring the study of literature back to the forefront of creative writing instructional theory. A presentation of an upper level, literature focused, online creative writing course illustrates how creative writing and the study of great writers can be effectively integrated in an online environment.

Lola Ridge : Poet And Renegade Modernist, Anna Hueppauff

This thesis examines the poetry of Lola Ridge as a form of alternative Modernism. Poet, editor, anarchist, Lola Ridge is largely an unknown identity in Modernist discourses. Primarily recognised as a social justice poet, her work has been viewed through a traditional Modernist lens and excluded to the periphery as ‘sentimental’. This thesis argues that Ridge personally and professionally exceeds these categories. She modelled a practice of engagement in her personal life by actively participating in rallies and protests against injustice, and living in poverty in solidarity with the poor, giving her work an authenticity worth investigating. Time boundaries delimit mankind's concerns while subtly affecting the perspective men have on all ontological questions. However, Jorge Luis Borges' short fiction develops an a-temporal perspective that denies the distinctions of a past, present, and future, obscuring traditional human conceptions of time and reality. He repetitively uses cycles and labyrinths as spatial metaphors for time to emphasize man's Inability to escape the maze of existence and to define a final reality that he can order. Borges' fiction suggests that only by trying to understand what exists beyond our universe in an unknowable. Infinite time continuum can human reality be ordered …

We find that English literature, undivided in the past, at the end of the nineteenth century has four divisions: British, American, Canadian, and Australian. The British is still the most important since it has the greatest literary background. But the steadily growing American literature ranks second to it.
