Prolonged Environmental Enrichment Promotes Developmental Myelination., Evan Z Goldstein, Vera Pertsovskaya, Thomas A Forbes, Jeffrey L Dupree, Vittorio Gallo

Postnatal neurodevelopment is profoundly influenced by environmental experiences. Environmental enrichment is a commonly used experimental paradigm that has uncovered numerous examples of experience-dependent plasticity in health and disease. However, the role of environmental enrichment in normal development, especially glial development, is largely unexplored. Oligodendrocytes, the myelin-forming glia in the central nervous system, provide metabolic support to axons and establish efficient saltatory conduction by producing myelin. Indeed, alterations in myelin are strongly correlated with sensory, cognitive, and motor function. The timing of developmental myelination is uniquely positioned to be influenced by environmental stimuli, as peak myelination occurs postnatally and continues into …
Early Enteral Feeding In Preterm Infants: A Narrative Review Of The Nutritional, Metabolic, And Developmental Benefits, Melissa K. Thoene, Ann Anderson-Berry
Early Enteral Feeding In Preterm Infants: A Narrative Review Of The Nutritional, Metabolic, And Developmental Benefits, Melissa K. Thoene, Ann Anderson-Berry
Journal Articles: Pediatrics
Enteral feeding is the preferred method of nutrient provision for preterm infants. Though parenteral nutrition remains an alternative to provide critical nutrition after preterm delivery, the literature suggests that enteral feeding still confers significant nutritional and non-nutritional benefits. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review is to summarize health and clinical benefits of early enteral feeding within the first month of life in preterm infants. Likewise, this review also proposes methods to improve enteral delivery in clinical care, including a proposal for decision-making of initiation and advancement of enteral feeding. An extensive literature review assessed enteral studies in preterm infants …
Summary Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd) Among Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander People, Australian Indigenous Healthinfonet
Summary Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd) Among Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander People, Australian Indigenous Healthinfonet
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a condition caused by alcohol exposure before birth. During pregnancy, alcohol freely crosses the placenta [1]. The baby cannot process the alcohol and this may result in damage to the baby’s brain and body. Not all babies exposed to alcohol during pregnancy will develop FASD, but there is no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy [2, 3]. FASD is a lifelong condition that results in cognitive, physical and behavioural disabilities [2]. FASD occurs everywhere in Australia where people drink alcohol. Many women drink during pregnancy before they know they are …
The Effects Of Postpartum Depression On Children's Social Development, Delaney Besse, Margaret Williams, Danielle Spencer, Brooke Walters
The Effects Of Postpartum Depression On Children's Social Development, Delaney Besse, Margaret Williams, Danielle Spencer, Brooke Walters
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The increased incidence of postpartum depression has had significant effects on children’s social development. The purpose of this systematic review is to bring attention to the growing problem in such a vulnerable population. In addition, it was designed to shed light on the lack of research in this area of healthcare. The methods used to conduct the study include various peer reviewed, scholarly and evidenced based articles from databases such as Academic Search Complete, PsycNet, and Pubmed. Each article has been critically evaluated based on the following guidelines: a population group of children under the age of four, specifically maternal …
Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Screening Tool For Children For Detection Of Developmental, Behavioral And Family Issues, Lyndsay Goss
Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Screening Tool For Children For Detection Of Developmental, Behavioral And Family Issues, Lyndsay Goss
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Children are a vulnerable population who are at risk for a variety of developmental, behavioral and family concerns. Early intervention leads to improved outcomes. By implementing the comprehensive evidence-based screening tool the Survey of Well-being for Young Children (SWYC), within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), outcomes for these children may be improved through early intervention.
Methods: The SWYC survey was provided to parents and guardians of children ages zero to five years at one pilot site at a FQHC in New England during well child visits (WCV) over a 6-week period. Implementation success was measured through review …
Tgfβ Provides The Backbone Of Embryogenesis: Elucidating The Role Of Tgfβ Signaling And Its Downstream Effectors On Spinal Column Development, Sade Williams Clayton
Tgfβ Provides The Backbone Of Embryogenesis: Elucidating The Role Of Tgfβ Signaling And Its Downstream Effectors On Spinal Column Development, Sade Williams Clayton
All ETDs from UAB
The spinal column is composed of two components, the vertebra (VB) that provide support and the intervertebral disc (IVD) that provide weight distribution. The structural integrity of IVDs is maintained by a fibrocartilaginous tissue called the annulus fibrosus (AF) which can degenerate with age or trauma and contribute to chronic back pain. There are currently no diseases modifying treatments that curb IVD degeneration. Regenerative therapies to treat IVD degeneration can be developed from identifying the signaling factors required for AF differentiation, but these factors are unknown. Previously, we showed that TGFβ signaling is required for AF formation in mice and …
