A Diagnostic Autoantibody Signature For Primary Cutaneous Melanoma, Pauline Zaenker, Johnny Lo, Robert L. Pearce, Phillip Cantwell, Lester Cowell, Mark Lee, Christopher Quirk, Henry Law, Elin S. Gray, Mel R. Ziman Dr
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Melanoma is an aggressive form of skin cancer that is curable by surgical excision in the majority of cases, if detected at an early stage. To improve early stage melanoma detection, the development of a highly sensitive diagnostic test is of utmost importance. Here we aimed to identify antibodies to a panel of tumour associated antigens that can differentiate primary melanoma patients and healthy individuals. A total of 245 sera from primary melanoma patients and healthy volunteers were screened against a high-throughput microarray platform containing 1627 functional proteins. Following rigorous statistical analysis, we identified a combination of 10 autoantibody biomarkers …
Early Diagnosis And Nutritional Treatment Stabilizes Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Ian James Martins
Early Diagnosis And Nutritional Treatment Stabilizes Neuropsychiatric Disorders, Ian James Martins
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The reliable diagnostic identification of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disease, and depression has been associated with some biological markers (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) but to date, these markers do not have the sensitivity/specificity of a diagnostic test. Biomarker tests that are relevant to global chronic disease are now applicable to neuropsychiatric diseases to prevent autoimmune disease, endoplasmic reticulum stress associated mitophagy with relevance to neuron apoptosis. Metabolic abnormalities has been linked to neuropsychiatric disorder with the careful nutritional assessment of patients reported in many published studies. Early interventions with genomic medicine now assist in the prevention of autoimmune disease …

A Case Report Of Apatemon Gracilis (Szidat, 1928) Infectionin Domestic Geese In Mainland China, Dandan Liu, Zhennan Zhuo, Jianping Tao, Jinjun Xu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This is the first report of the diagnosis and treatment of Apatemon gracilis infection in domestic geese in mainland China confirmed at the molecular level. The mortality of geese reached 10% (150/1500). Necropsy examinations confirmed hemorrhagic inflammation of the small intestine and blood and catarrhal mucus in the enteric cavity. A large number of flukes were found in the first third of the small intestine, with one end buried in the intestinal mucosa, forming lesions at the absorption sites. The ITS-1 sequence of the parasites was amplified by polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis confirmed that the isolated worms were …
The Effectiveness Of Screening For Comorbid Depression Among Outpatients With Chronic Diseases In Maryland, Linda Hasssan Allibalogun
The Effectiveness Of Screening For Comorbid Depression Among Outpatients With Chronic Diseases In Maryland, Linda Hasssan Allibalogun
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a pervasive mental health disorder worldwide. Although being diagnosed with chronic illness exacerbates susceptibility to depression, detection and subsequent treatment of comorbid depression in primary care settings remain suboptimal because patients with chronic medical disorders are not commonly screened for depression. There is a need to initiate proactive measures by implementing routine screening in primary care settings. The plan-do-study-act (PDSA) model guided an intervention to establish a depression screening practice. This study aimed to determine if the implementation of evidence-based screening for depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) tool could increase diagnosis of comorbid depression among patients …
Microbiological And Clinical Data Analysis Of 32 Patients With Nocardia Infections In Yantai, Hong-Xia Yu, Ming Liu, Zeng-Hui Pu, Yan Liu, Mao-Mao Zhao
Microbiological And Clinical Data Analysis Of 32 Patients With Nocardia Infections In Yantai, Hong-Xia Yu, Ming Liu, Zeng-Hui Pu, Yan Liu, Mao-Mao Zhao
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Nocardia is an opportunistic pathogen that mostly a ects hosts with immune de ciencies. Recently, the widespread use of immunosuppressive agents and antitumor drugs has led to an increasing number of Nocardia infections being reported. However, it is di cult to con rm this diagnosis owing to the slow growth of the bacterium and its complex resultant clinical manifestations, potentially delaying treatment and increasing mortality. us, further knowledge on the clinical characteristics of Nocardia infection is required. Hence, this study aimed to review the demographics, comorbidities, clinical presentation, microbiology, treatment, and outcomes of Nocardia infections in Yantai. Materials and …
Mental Disorder And Criminal Justice, Stephen J. Morse
Mental Disorder And Criminal Justice, Stephen J. Morse
All Faculty Scholarship
This paper is a chapter that will appear in REFORMING CRIMINAL JUSTICE: A REPORT OF THE ACADEMY FOR JUSTICE BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN SCHOLARSHIP AND REFORM (Erik Luna ed., Academy for Justice 2018). The criminal law treats some people with severe mental disorders doctrinally and practically differently at virtually every stage of the criminal justice process, beginning with potential incompetence to stand trial and ending with the question of competence to be executed, and such people have special needs when they are in the system. This chapter begins by exploring the fundamental mental health information necessary to make informed judgements …
Takayasu Arteritis: An Update, Gökhan Keser, Kenan Aksu, Rafi̇ Haner Di̇reskeneli̇
Takayasu Arteritis: An Update, Gökhan Keser, Kenan Aksu, Rafi̇ Haner Di̇reskeneli̇
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a challenging chronic, granulomatous, large-vessel systemic vasculitis, mostly due to difficulties in early diagnosis and assessing actual disease activity. Since there are no specific diagnostic laboratory tests, biomarkers, or autoantibodies, many patients experience considerable delay in diagnosis. Remembering the possibility of TAK together with the use of acute phase responses and appropriate imaging studies may be helpful for early diagnosis. Since there may be discrepancies between systemic and vascular wall inflammation, using only acute phase responses is not reliable in assessing current disease activity. Therefore, physical examination and new imaging findings should also be used to …

Polycythemia Vera: Diagnosis, Clinical Course, And Current Management, Yahya Büyükaşik, Ridvan Ali̇, Muhli̇s Cem Ar, Mehmet Turgut, Aki̇f Seli̇m Yavuz, Güray Saydam
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Very important developments related to polycythemia vera (PV) have occurred during the last two decades. The discovery of Janus kinase (JAK) 2 mutations has changed both the diagnosis and clinical management of PV. Currently JAK2 molecular testing is essential in the diagnostic work-up and JAK2 mutation positivity is a major diagnostic criterion. The discovery of JAK2 mutations suggested that abnormal JAK-STAT signaling was a pivotal feature in the pathogenesis of Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms. This idea led to the development of JAK inhibitors. Currently ruxolitinib, a JAK1/JAK2 inhibitor, is also approved for PV patients with hydroxyurea resistance or intolerance. International collaborations …
“Just Because A Doctor Says Something, Doesn’T Mean That [It] Will Happen”: Self-Perception As Having A Fertility Problem Among Infertility Patients, Ophra Leyser-Whalen, Arthur L. Greil, Julia Mcquillan, Katherine M. Johnson
Johnson
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Only some individuals who have the medically defined condition ‘infertility’ adopt a self-definition as having a fertility problem, which has implications for social and behavioral responses, yet there is no clear consensus on why some people and not others adopt a medical label. We use interview data from 28 women and men who sought medical infertility treatment to understand variations in self-identification. Results highlight the importance of identity disruption for understanding the dialectical relationship between medical contact and self-identification, as well as how diagnosis acts both as a category and a process. Simultaneously integrating new medical knowledge from testing and …
Comparative Analysis Of Low Molecular Weight Fraction Of Conditioned Media Derived From Starvation-Dormant And Anaerobically-Dormant Mycobacterium Avium Subsp. Paratuberculosis, Marina Buciuc
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Johne's disease (JD) caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is a contagious chronic enteritis affecting all ruminants and causing economic loss of at least $250 million annually in the US dairy industry. One of the major limitations in the diagnosis of JD is the low sensitivity of fecal culture in animals with no clinical signs of the disease, but who are actively shedding MAP. Persistence of MAP in the host with no apparent signs of infection is attributed to its ability to enter a dormant state wherein the bacterium is viable, but is not able to replicate until conditions …

Diagnosing Pulmonary Hypertension Due To Left Heart Disease Using Diastolic Echo Markers: The National Echo Database Of Australia (Neda) Ph-Lhd Predictive Formula, Kevin Chung
Theses
Aims: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is commonly due to left heart disease caused by ischaemic heart disease, hypertension and valvular heart disease. It is under diagnosed and associated with a high mortality. PH diagnosed using echo requires a measurable tricuspid regurgitation velocity (TRV) to estimate the pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PH = PASP >40mmHg). However, up to 40% of studies have insufficient TRV to calculate a PASP. This can lead to significant delays in the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension, increased morbidity and delays in the initiation of treatment.
This thesis seeks to determine the prevalence of PH and the diastolic echo …
