Clinical And Financial Evaluation Of Patients Within A Diagnosis Related Group, Osama M. Ibrahim Jan 1984

Clinical And Financial Evaluation Of Patients Within A Diagnosis Related Group, Osama M. Ibrahim

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate financial and clinical data of patients within a selected DRG. The data obtained from such analysis will be used to design a system whereby clinical pharmacists may improve the hospital's reimbursement potential.

Based upon Upton's proposed plan, this study is designed to evaluate all DRGs in a community hospital in an attempt to focus on those DRGs which represent the greatest financial pressure to the pharmacy department and, therefore, to the institution.

Clinical and financial data of patients within the expensive DRG, will be collected from their medical and financial records for …

Release Of Cortisol From Lanolin Alcohol-Providone Films, Mahmud Sighayer Treki Jan 1984

Release Of Cortisol From Lanolin Alcohol-Providone Films, Mahmud Sighayer Treki

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In this study, lanolin alcohol as well as lanolin alcohol-povidone films (1:1 . 5) were investigated as a potential drug delivery system. The in vitro drug release from these films was studied in terms of the effect of agitation, film thickness and drug concentration. The rate of release of Cortisol from lanolin alcohol films was not affected by the intensity of agitation. Moreover, the film matrix was found to remain essentially intact throughout the release process. Further analysis of the data revealed that Higuchi's diffusion-controlled granular matrix model explained the mechanism of Cortisol release from such films. The results of …

Normative Data For The Tennessee Test Of Rhythm And Intonation Patterns (T-Trip), Ray Drommond Jan 1984

Normative Data For The Tennessee Test Of Rhythm And Intonation Patterns (T-Trip), Ray Drommond

Dissertations and Theses

Prosody is the flow of speech created by controlling elements such as pitch, rate, loudness, and stress (Tiffany and Carrell, 1977). Prosody is vital to intelligibility of speech and also communicates meaning. Despite the importance of prosody, however, few tests for the adequacy of prosodic ability in young children have been published (Koike and Asp, 1981a). To remedy this paucity of tools, Koike and Asp published the Tennessee Test of Rhythm and Intonation Patterns (T-TRIP). The clinical usefulness of the T-TRIP has been limited by a lack of normative data against which to compare individual children's performance.

The purpose of …

Angiographic Patterns Of Arteriosclerosis Obliterans In The Legs Of Diabetics And Nondiabetics : Review Of The Literature And The Recent Experience At Yale-New Haven Hospital, Aron Wahrman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The literature regarding angiographic patterns of arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) in the legs of diabetics and nondiabetics is reviewed. The medical records of 28 adult-onset diabetics and 35 nondiabetics with chronic ASO of the lower extremities who underwent angiography for the first time were analyzed for age, presenting symptoms, smoking history, history of hypertension and therapeutic fate of the affected limbs. The arteriograms were analyzed for basic disease patterns and degree of disease at specific segments of the arterial tree, based on the radiologist's findings. Diabetics have more popliteal and trifurcation disease than nondiabetics, but less than has been found in …

The Synthesis Of Various Substituted 3-Amino-7-Hydroxy-2,2-Dimethyltetralins And Their Opioid-Related Activities, David Alan Lippman Jan 1984

The Synthesis Of Various Substituted 3-Amino-7-Hydroxy-2,2-Dimethyltetralins And Their Opioid-Related Activities, David Alan Lippman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A series of aminotetralones and aminotetralins were synthesized from the common intermediate F, 3-amino-2,2-dimethyl-7-methoxy- 1-tetralone. The final compounds derived from F were simple substituted and/or reduced analogues. The products would allow a progressive structure activity relationship to be drawn based on pharmacological testing.

The common intermediate F was synthesized utilizing a six step procedure starting with p-methoxyphenylacetic acid. The overall yield from the precursor to the F:HC1 was 25%. Compound F was either O-demethylated to form 3-amino-2,2-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-l-tetralone (I) or was dimethylated on the amine and subsequently O-demethylated to yield the 3-dimethylamino-7-hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-l-tetralone (J). The last major modification was the reduction of …

Mechanisms Of Energy Balance In Obesity, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1984

Mechanisms Of Energy Balance In Obesity, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The proper understanding of obesity requires a multifaceted approach. Behavioral considerations of eating and activity patterns do not account for the large between- and within-subjects variance associated with the energy-balance equation. Sources of adaptive and dispositional variance in metabolic rates are reviewed and suggested to be a likely source of importance for the proper conceptualization and intervention of obesity. Five proposed mechanisms of metabolic variation are reviewed with consideration of the supporting evidence for each mechanism. The generalizability of some of the proposed mechanisms is limited because of the scope of past research. However, the roles of lipoprotein lipase in …

A Validation Study Of The Screening Test For Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Deborah L. Thorsen Jan 1984

A Validation Study Of The Screening Test For Developmental Apraxia Of Speech, Deborah L. Thorsen

Dissertations and Theses

The term "developmental apraxia of speech" (DAS) has been a confusing one since Morley, Court and Miller (1954) first applied it to articulatory patterns of a specific group of children. Until recently, the differentiation of diagnostic features of DAS in children as compared to other articulatory disorders has been difficult. One evaluation tool, developed by Blakeley (1980), to assist in differential diagnosis of DAS is the Screening Test for Developmental Apraxia of Speech (STDAS). This study examined the validity of this tool by comparing its results with the evaluations by three Speech-Language Pathologists knowledgeable in the area of developmental and/or …

Evaluation Of Peptide Assimilation In Ehrlich Ascites Tumor Cells, John M. Castellano Jan 1984

Evaluation Of Peptide Assimilation In Ehrlich Ascites Tumor Cells, John M. Castellano

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The dipeptides glycyl-L-(3H)-leucine and L-phenylalanyl-L-(3H)-leucine were synthesized in radioactive form and utilized in the analysis of peptide transport and hydrolysis by Ehrlich ascites tumor cells. The tumor cells were cultured in the abdominal cavity of CF-1 albino mice and harvested into sterile isotonic buffer for all experimental analyses.

The results of this study reveal that the tumor cells rapidly accumulate radiolabel when incubated with the above mentioned peptides, but that the peptide is most probably hydrolyzed extracellularly and free L-(3)-leucine transported. This hypothesis is based on the observations of reduction in accumulation of radiolabel …

Quality Of Life, Sanctity Of Creation: Palliative Or Apotheosis?, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1984

Quality Of Life, Sanctity Of Creation: Palliative Or Apotheosis?, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

This Article will suggest an approach to facilitate decision-making where the concepts of quality of life and sanctity of life appear to clash. It is hoped that a reconciliation of these two ideas will provide an alternative to the increasing federal intervention in the process of family decision-making vis-a-vis handicapped infants.

The construct will combine deontological standards with situational, or consequential, ethics. This unique synthesis will then be placed within a sphere of expanded family advisers-medical, social, spiritual, legal, etc.-who are called into being with the birth of a genetically defective newborn. The force of the construct arises from the …

The Plight Of The Genetically Handicapped Newborn: A Comparative Analysis, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1984

The Plight Of The Genetically Handicapped Newborn: A Comparative Analysis, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Confusion and controversy surround efforts to re-evaluate and, thus, redefine the extent to which governmental intrusion should be allowed in the doctor-patient relationship vis-a-vis the treatment or non treatment of genetically handicapped, at risk infants. The purpose of this article is to present a succinct comparative analysis of the medical-legal posture in Britain and the United States and from this analysis to develop a construct to aid the physician and the family in making decisions concerning the administration or the withholding of treatment for genetically defective newborns.

Sexuality, Privacy And The New Biology, George P. Smith Ii, Roberto Iraola Jan 1984

Sexuality, Privacy And The New Biology, George P. Smith Ii, Roberto Iraola

Scholarly Articles

This Article investigates two alternative methods of human conception: Specifically, the artificial insemination of unmarried women for either their own personal purposes of pregnancy without the benefit of marriage or as surrogates for infertile women. Surrogation is evaluated, then, as an analytic complement to the sexual privacy of women who are expressing their sexual freedom through unconventional means to become pregnant.

The conclusion drawn is that an unmarried woman’s fundamental right to privacy or procreation does not encompass a right to either artificial insemination or surrogation. To allow unfettered access to these two methods of conception would - quite simply …

Survey Of Language Acquisition Techniques Provided By Parents Of Talented And Gifted Children, Sharon Engen Jan 1984

Survey Of Language Acquisition Techniques Provided By Parents Of Talented And Gifted Children, Sharon Engen

Dissertations and Theses

Most of the studies on language acquisition techniques provided by parents have been addressed to the training of parents for prevention of language disabilities and disorders (Latzke, 1975). Few investigations have involved language acquisition of the superior functioning child (Patterson, 1981). Hence, the purpose of this study was to survey language acquisition techniques provided by parents of talented and gifted children (TAG) who were enrolled in the Beaverton School District Number 48 TAG program. The first question dealt with what materials and/or equipment did the parents use in aiding their child's language development. The second question dealt with which particular …

Monoclonal Antibodies: A Powerful Tool For Selecting And Analyzing Mutations In Antigens And Antibodies, Roberta Pollock, Jean-Luc Teillaud, Matthew Scharff

Roberta Pollock

Antibodies have played an important role in microbiology. In addition to their uses in classifying microorganisms and studying evolutionary relationships, antibodies are useful for detecting the microheterogeneity of proteins that arises from recombination and somatic mutation. However, the usefulness of im munological assays has been complicated by the difficulty of repeatedly gener ating large amounts of antibodies with restricted reactivity, and the heter ogeneity of all antisera obtained by conventional methods. These problems reflect the fact that antisera contain antibodies secreted by many antibody producing B cell clones; hence such antibodies are termed polyclonal anti bodies. Even if the same …
