The Use Of Convocation For Exploring Multiculturalism, Ida Slusher, C. Newell-Withrow

Ida Slusher

The development of creative persons in the field of nursing has been identified as a major task for nurse leaders (1). A critical component in the development of creative nurses is the development of persons who are culturally sensitive, who recognize and respect cultural diversity (2).

Nurses need a broad understanding of the impact of society, politics, and culture on the practice of professional nursing (3). We have been challenged to discover ways to explore diverse aspects of humanity that are not culturally bound (4). Jeanne E. Jenkins

The sample consisted of 2,229 high school students who were administered a self-report instrument containing items measuring drug use and psychosocial variables. Dependent variables included frequency of use of five gateway drugs [cigarettes, marijuana, beer, wine coolers, and liquor], degree of affiliation with drug- using peers, and perceptions of peer acceptance of drugs. Comparison groups included single-parent [both mother- and father-headed], step-parent, and intact families. Analysis conducted separately by grade level revealed significant differences between groups on drug use variables in grades 8 and 10, with adolescents from intact families reporting less frequent drug use, fewer drug-using friends, and perceptions …

Themes That Thread Through Society: Racism And Athletic Manifestation In The African-American Community, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this article is to examine and critically analyze the impact of sport in the African-American community. This critique of the social and behavioral outcomes of sport in the African-American community will include philosophical, historical, and sociological inquiry most affecting the plight of the African-American male in academics and athletics. When And How Perfectionism Impedes The Brief Treatment Of Depression: Further Analyses Of The Nimh Tdcrp, Sidney J. Blatt, David C. Zuroff, Colin M. Bondi, Charles A. Sanislow, Paul A. Pilkonis

Charles A. Sanislow, Ph.D.

Perfectionism has previously been identified as having a significant negative impact on therapeutic outcome at termination in the brief (16-week) treatment of depression (S. J. Blatt, D. M. Quinlan, P. A. Pilkonis, & T. Shea, 1995) as measured by the 5 primary outcome measures used in the National Institute of Mental Health Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program (TDCRP). The present analyses of other data from the TDCRP indicated that this impact of perfectionism on therapeutic outcome was also found in ratings by therapists, independent clinical evaluators, and the patients and that this effect persisted 18 months after termination. Gap Detection Threshold In Ears With And Without Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions, Jacek Smurzynski, Rudolf Probst Dec 1997

Gap Detection Threshold In Ears With And Without Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions, Jacek Smurzynski, Rudolf Probst

Jacek Smurzynski

Gap detection was measured for two groups of normally hearing young adults using broad-band noise stimuli. Group I consisted of subjects who exhibitcd both strong spontaneous and click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs and CEOAEs). Group II included individuals with no SOms in either ear and weak CEOAEs. An adaptive 2FC gap detection task was performed for the stimuli presented at either 10, 20, 30, or 50 dB SL. At 10 dB SL stimulus level, the ears in Group 1 exhibited greater intersubject variability and higher mean gap detection thresholds than those in Group ll. At higher SLs, there were no differences …
