Protection Of Pasteurella Multocida Dermonecrotic Toxin-Challenged Rats By Toxoid-Induced Antibody, R. K. Pettit, R. B. Rimler, Mark R. Ackermann
Protection Of Pasteurella Multocida Dermonecrotic Toxin-Challenged Rats By Toxoid-Induced Antibody, R. K. Pettit, R. B. Rimler, Mark R. Ackermann
Mark R. Ackermann
Two different doses of glutaraldehyde-treated Pasteurella multocida dermonecrotic toxin (PMDT) were used to immunize rats. Rats developed serum IgG antibodies specific for native PMDT, and IgG titers increased with dose and number of toxoid immunizations. Survival rates in both active immunization and passive serum neutralization experiments were dependent on dose of toxoid vaccination and serum levels of anti-PMDT IgG. Vaccination with toxoid prevented weight loss but not leukocytosis and increased complement titers in toxin-challenged rats. Toxoid, itself, induced minimal leukocytosis but no alterations in complement titers or weight gain.

Heterophil Chemotaxis In Chickens With Natural Staphylococcal Infections, James R. Andreasen Jr., Claire B. Andreasen, Mohammad Anwer, Anita E. Sonn
Heterophil Chemotaxis In Chickens With Natural Staphylococcal Infections, James R. Andreasen Jr., Claire B. Andreasen, Mohammad Anwer, Anita E. Sonn
Claire B. Andreasen
Heterophil chemotaxis using heterophils isolated from the peripheral blood of five commercial broiler chickens naturally infected with staphylococcal bacteria was compared by the modified Boyden-chamber technique with chemotaxis of heterophils from two chickens from the same flock not infected with Staphylococcus (field controls) and from four healthy laboratory control broiler chickens. The infected chickens had gross and histologic lesions of staphylococcal tenosynovitis and osteomyelitis. Staphylococci were isolated from the lesions. Hematologic parameters and histologic lesions of infected chickens also were examined. Compared with field and laboratory controls, Staphylococcus-infected chickens had heterophilic leukocytosis. The heterophils of Staphylococcus-infected chickens had significantly lower …
Chicken Heterophil Chemotaxis Using Staphylococcus-Generated Chemoattractants, James R. Andreasen Jr., Claire B. Andreasen, Mohammad Anwer, Anita E. Sonn
Chicken Heterophil Chemotaxis Using Staphylococcus-Generated Chemoattractants, James R. Andreasen Jr., Claire B. Andreasen, Mohammad Anwer, Anita E. Sonn
Claire B. Andreasen
Heterophil chemotaxis, in response to chemotactic factors generated by three different strains of staphylococcal bacteria, was measured using the modified Boyden-chamber technique. Heterophils were obtained from healthy 6-to-8-week-old broiler chickens. Each bacterial strain generated factors that were chemotactic for chicken heterophils. Factors generated by two pathogenic isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, however, induced significantly greater chemotaxis in chicken heterophils than those generated by a nonpathogenic Staphylococcus isolate.
The Early Months Of Stuttering: A Developmental Study, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi, Nicoline Grinager Ambrose
The Early Months Of Stuttering: A Developmental Study, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi, Nicoline Grinager Ambrose
Rebecca Throneburg
Objective data on the development of stuttering during its first several months are sparse. Such a deficit is due to parents' tendency to postpone professional consultation regarding early stuttering until later in the course of the disorder and to a lack of longitudinal studies beginning close to onset. This report presents information on a rare group of 16 preschool subjects who were evaluated within several weeks after stuttering onset and followed for 6 months using multiple measures. The findings show that often early stuttering takes on a moderate-to-severe form. Substantial changes occurred, however, during the 6 months of the study, …

Lexical Development In Bilingual Infants And Toddlers: Comparison To Monolingual Norms, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Sylvia C. Fernandez, D.Kimbrough Oller
Lexical Development In Bilingual Infants And Toddlers: Comparison To Monolingual Norms, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Sylvia C. Fernandez, D.Kimbrough Oller
Barbara Zurer Pearson
This study compares lexical development in a sample of 25 simultaneous bilingual and 35 monolingual children for whom semilongitudinal data were collected between the ages of 8 and 30 months. A standardized parent report form, the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (1989), was used to assess the children's receptive and productive vocabulary in English and/or Spanish. A methodology was devised to assess the degree of overlap between the bilingual children's lexical knowledge in one language and their knowledge in the other. Using the measures presented here, there was no statistical basis for concluding that the bilingual children were slower to develop …
Modulation Of Mhc Expression On Human Endothelial-Cells By Sera From Patients With Systemic Lupus-Erythematosus, Mary Anne Tan Jin Ai
Modulation Of Mhc Expression On Human Endothelial-Cells By Sera From Patients With Systemic Lupus-Erythematosus, Mary Anne Tan Jin Ai
Mary Anne Tan Jin Ai
Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigen expression on cells is a prerequisite for immune interaction with activated T-cells. This study examined the ability of sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to modulate MHC expression on vascular endothelial cells. SLE sera were able to selectively upregulate MHC class I antigen expression on cultured human umbilical venous endothelial (HUVE) cells, without concomitant induction of MHC class II antigen. The stimulation index (SI) for MHC class I expression produced by SLE sera (1.21 ± 0.23) was significantly higher than those for normal controls (1.01 ± 0.10) (P < 0.0001) and non-SLE patients (1.12 ± 0.14) (P < 0.05). Additionally, active SLE patients had higher mean SI than inactive patients (P < 0.001). Preincubation of SLE sera with Protein A-Sepharose beads conjugated with antibodies against tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-α was able to significantly reduce their ability to upregulate class I MHC expression by HUVE cells, indicating that these cytokines were responsible for the modulatory effect. This could be an important mechanism for the immune-mediated vascular injury seen in SLE.

Harpoon Extraction Of A Common Bile Duct Stone Impacted At The Ampulla Of Vater With Needle-Knife Sphincterotome., Vivian C. Mcalister, Andre Roy, Ron Passi
Vivian C. McAlister
The urgency of dealing with impacted ampullary stones is underlined in the first case reported by Opie6 at the autopsy of a young woman. Impacted ampullary stones that prevent papillary cannulation and standard sphincterotomy make up less than 5% of common bile duct stones seen at ERCP.3 Several series suggest the safe use of needle-knife sphincterotomy to create a choledochoduodenal fistula or to allow subsequent standard sphincterotomy in this situation. These series have also reported failure to extract the stone so that surgical removal was required.3,4Successful sphincterotomy may facilitate the early diagnosis of tumors that cause the ampulla to bulge. …
