Overactive Bladder Syndrome And Detrusor Overactivity: Is There A Strong Relation Between The Symptoms And Urodynamic Findings?, Orhan Ünal Zorba, Taner Koçak, Kadi̇r Önem
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Overactive bladder (OAB) and detrusor overactivity (DO) may interfere because one may cause the other. Not all patients with OAB have DO, neither do all patients with DO have OAB. In our study the correlation between OAB symptoms and DO was investigated. Materials and Methods: In the present study, 190 patients with OAB and/or DO were investigated. Patients were divided into 3 groups: OAB with DO group (group 1, n = 63), DO without OAB group (group 2, n = 34), and OAB without DO group (group 3, n = 93). The symptoms and urodynamic findings of the patients …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: In this study, we aimed to compare the nutritional habits and obesity status of employed and not-employed (i.e. homemakers) women from an urban population in Ankara between April 2 and 17, 2007. Materials and methods: Employed females (107) were amongst Keçiören (a district of Ankara) municipal employees, and homemakers were selected among the residents of the catchment area of a primary health care unit (PHCU) within the same district. The 2 groups (employed and homemakers) were high school and university graduates and were similar to each other in terms of education and age. The World Health Organization defines "overweight" …

Aim: Endoscopic polypectomy has an important place in the treatment of polyps—the preliminary lesions of colorectal cancers. This study aimed to discuss the outcomes of endoscopic polypectomy in 467 patients for 692 polyps over the course of 20 years. Materials and methods: The records of 692 endoscopic polypectomies performed in 467 patients between July 1988 and July 2008 were retrospectively evaluated. Results: Patient age ranged from 3 to 85 years (mean: 50.6 years), and 302 of the 467 (64.7%) patients were male. Polypectomy was performed for 692 polyps (mean: 1.5; range: 1-12). The most common polyp location was the rectum …

Progression Of Binocular Vision Following Cataract Surgery*, İlknur Akyol Salman, Murat Arslankurt, Osman Dursun, Ahmet Yazici, Orhan Baykal
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: To investigate the progression of binocular vision of patients after cataract surgery in the early postoperative period. Materials and methods: Eighty four cataract patients were evaluated at postoperative 1 and 3 months after phacoemulsification and posterior chamber monofocal lens implantation. For the evaluation of the grades of binocular vision, synoptophore was used. Stereoscopic acuity was measured with the Titmus Stereotest. Results: Evaluation at postoperative 3 months was associated with a significantly higher proportion of patients with stereopsis (P = 0.004), better levels of stereoacuities (P < 0.001) than the evaluation at postoperative 1 month. Significantly higher visual acuities (P = 0.001) and lower interocular difference in refraction values (P = 0.023) were also noted at postoperative 3 months. The level of stereoscopic acuity was not significantly correlated with the level of visual acuity, interocular visual acuity difference, interocular difference in refraction, and the age of patients (P > 0.05). In patients without fusion, suppression was found in the operated eyes with favorable …

Aim: Studies have shown that maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with low birth weight, height and head circumference in newborns. In the present study, along with these anthropometric measures we aimed to determine fetal malnutrition (FM), which is a less known outcome of antenatal tobacco exposure. Materials and methods: Two hundred and sixty-six term singletons without anomalies were evaluated for their birth weight, height, and head circumference and for FM using the Clinical Assessment of Nutritional Status (CANS) scoring. A CANS score equal to or less than 24 is accepted as FM. Results: Smokers' (n = 84) and passive …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: Differentiated thyroid carcinoma has a favorable prognosis, even in the presence of distant metastases, if the tumor cells are able to concentrate radioiodine. Nonetheless, up to 30% of thyroid cancer patients with elevated serum thyroglobulin (Tg) and negative radioiodine whole-body scan findings represent a diagnostic dilemma. In this study we assessed the diagnostic contribution of anatomical and functional imaging procedures, including US of the thyroid bed and neck, CT scanning of the chest and mediastinum, and FDG PET whole-body scanning, in iodine-negative/Tg-positive thyroid cancer patients. Materials and methods: The study included 28 patients (20 female, 8 male; age range: …

Aim: Homocysteine is known to inhibit endothelial cell proliferation, which is a key event in angiogenesis. Factors responsible for the presence or absence of coronary collateral circulation are poorly understood. Therefore, in this study we investigated the effect of plasma homocysteine level on the early formation of angiographically visible collaterals after acute myocardial infarction. Materials and Methods: The study included 60 patients that had ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). All the patients underwent coronary angiography 1-4 days after admission (mean: 2.3 ± 1.2 days). Patients were graded according to Rentrop classification. Patients with grade 0 or 1 collateral vessels were …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Secretory breast carcinoma is a rare form of invasive breast carcinoma constituting less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. Since insufficient data have been compiled about this rare tumor, it is important to report every case of secretory breast carcinoma in an effort to better understand the histopathological and clinical characteristics of this tumor and to contemplate the most appropriate therapeutic approach. In this report, two adult female patients over 50 years of age and a 14-year-old girl were reviewed with a detailed immunohistochemical work-up to define the clinical and molecular characteristics of secretory breast carcinoma.
