Materials and methods: A total of 114 obese patients and 110 healthy controls were included. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI I-II), and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) were administered to assess anxiety, depression, and social anxiety levels. Scale scores were analyzed statistically. Results: The rate of SAD in obese female patients was found to be 8.8%. Anxiety, depression, and social …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The aim was to assess the differences between physical activity and physical fitness in obese, overweight, and normal-weight children. Materials and methods: The cross-sectional study was accomplished using cluster sampling method at 3 Lithuanian schools. An analysis of anthropometric data for 532 Lithuanian children was performed. Height, weight, waist and hip circumferences, and skinfold thickness were measured. Body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, and body fat percentage were calculated. The Youth Physical Activity Questionnaire and a 6-min walk test (6MWT) were administered to evaluate physical activity and physical fitness. Maximal oxygen consumption was calculated to assess the children's aerobic capacity. …

Correlation Between Body Mass Index And Semen Quality In Male Infertility Patients, Tang Wen-Hao, Zhuang Xin-Jie, Ma Lu-Lin, Qiao Jie, Hong Kai, Zhao Lian-Ming, Liu De-Feng, Mao Jia-Ming, Zhang Hong-Liang, Zhou Shan-Jie, Jiang Hui

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The question of whether body mass index (BMI) affects semen quality and male fertility is controversial. The purpose of this research was to determine whether there is a correlation between BMI and semen analysis parameters. Materials and methods: A total of 617 male infertility patients were recruited and separated into 3 groups according to BMI values as follows: normal weight group (n = 334), overweight group (n = 220), and obese group (n = 63). Height and weight were measured and a routine semen analysis was performed for all patients. Results: Significant differences existed in BMI, age, and sperm …

Obesity In Children And Adolescents And Its Relationship With Hypertension, Dr Vijayanath Itagi, Ramesh Patil Jan 2011

Obesity In Children And Adolescents And Its Relationship With Hypertension, Dr Vijayanath Itagi, Ramesh Patil

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It is difficult to project the prevalence of obesity and overweight among children in India since there is no nationally representative data from India. We determined the time trends in childhood obesity in a representative sample of schoolchildren from Raichur District, Karnataka and investigated the relationship of obesity with blood pressure. Materials and methods: We used a stratified random cluster sampling method to select the children. Anthropometric data were collected from 23,842 students, 5-16 years of age, during 2005-06. Blood pressure and anthropometric data were collected from 19,263 students during 2007-08. Overweight and obesity were defined by body mass index …

Anthropometric Measurements And Body Composition Analysis Of Obese Adolescents With And Without Metabolic Syndrome, Deni̇z Nazi̇re Çağdaş Ayvaz, Fatma Ni̇şanci Kilinç, Feyza Ayşenur Paç, Erman Çakal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Obesity and risk of metabolic syndrome (MS) are rapidly increasing in children. Therefore, criteria for MS were aimed to be evaluated in obese children (OC). Materials and methods: Anthropometric indices and body composition (bioimpedance) analysis (BIA) were compared in 32 obese and 32 normal-weight children. Biochemical parameters were evaluated in OC. Results of OC with/without MS were compared. Results: Subscapular skinfold thickness (SST) was more sensitive and specific than triceps skinfold thickness in the diagnosis of obesity. According to BIA basal metabolism rate, fat mass (FM), FM%, and FM index were higher, while impedance, FFM%, fat-free-mass (FFM) index, and total-body-water% …

Subclinical Hypothyroidism In Obese Turkish Adolescents: The Relationship With Anthropometry And Fatty Liver, Şami̇l Hizli, Nur Arslan, Ayhan Abaci, Benal Büyükgebi̇z

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To evaluate whether subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is associated with anthropometry and fatty infiltration of liver in obese adolescents. Materials and methods: The adolescents attended with the complaint of obesity aged 11 to 15 years included in the study. Patients were diagnosed as obese adolescents with fatty liver. Age-, gender-, and body weight-matched obese adolescents without fatty liver seen during the same period served as controls. Clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, and frequency of subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) of both groups were compared. Results: The study population included 218 adolescents with obesity. Of 218, 30 (13.7%) had fatty liver at ultrasonography (group 1) …

To determine the role of hepatic artery resistive index (HARI) measurement in the prediction of insulin resistance (IR) in obese children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Materials and methods: A total of 64 obese subjects with NAFLD (13.5 ± 1.36 years of age, 34 male) and 32 age- and gender-matched control subjects (13.8 ± 1.24 years of age, 16 male) were enrolled in the study. All subjects underwent a physical examination, laboratory tests, and ultrasonographic and Doppler examinations of the liver. The homeostasis model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR) was used for the IR diagnosis. Results: Obese subjects with NAFLD …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Determining the difference regarding obesity in German and Turkish adults. Materials and Methods: This study examined a cross-section of adults aged 30-79 years old. Age-adjustment was uniformly provided for comparisons. Results: Among 3055 Germans and 2925 Turks, Turkish women had significantly higher markers of (abdominal) obesity than German women, while waist circumference (WC) was similar among males. Blood pressure (BP), concentrations of total, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein B were significantly higher among Germans, whereas Turks had markedly higher fasting triglycerides and lower HDL-cholesterol. Unlike Germans, the current trend of smoking among Turks correlates with lower WC and lower systolic BP …
