Covid-19: Pathogenesis, Genetic Polymorphism, Clinical Features And Laboratory Findings, Recep Öztürk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

COVID-19 caused by a novel agent SARS-CoV-2 progressed to a pandemic condition and resulted in a major public health concern worldwide, leading to social and economic issues at the same time. The pathogenesis of COVID-19 starts with the bonding of the virus to ACE2 receptors expressed in many tissues, and the triggered excessive immune response plays a critical role in the course of the disease. The cytokine storm that occurs upon excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines is considered responsible for the severe progression of the disease and the organ damage. However, the accurate pathophysiological mechanism of the disease, which progresses …

Sheep Welfare During Transport And Slaughter In Bulgaria - Impact Of Welfare On Slaughter Carcass And Meat Quality: A Review, Nikolay Todorov Ivanov

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present work aimed to review the state of sheep welfare in Bulgaria during transportation and slaughter and to evaluate its relationship with slaughter carcass and meat quality. Over the last few years, animal welfare has become increasingly important. Normative documents related to welfare during rearing, transport, and slaughter of animals have been developed and promulgated. A major percentage of these animals are reared for meat production, but attempts to minimize stress and pain during transport and slaughter should be made. Stress reduction and pain control improve animal welfare and also impact carcass and meat quality. This overview demonstrates that …

Antioxidative Effects Of Uridine In A Neonatal Rat Model Of Hyperoxic Brain Injury, Nevi̇n Al, Ayşen Çakir, Cansu Sevi̇nç, Mehmet Cansev, Tüli̇n Alkan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Premature birth is a major problem that results in an increased risk of mortality and morbidity. The management of such infants consists of supraphysiological oxygen therapy, which affects brain development due, in part, to the deterioration caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). We showed previously that exogenously administered uridine provides neuroprotection in a neonatal rat model of hyperoxic brain injury. Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of uridine on ROS in the same setting. Materials and methods: Hyperoxic brain injury was induced by subjecting a total of 53 six-day-old rat pups to 80% …

Embryonic Mortality In Sheep: A Review, Pavitra Chundekkad, Barbara Blaszczyk, Tomasz Stankiewicz

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Despite extensive research on the reproductive health of domestic animals, embryonic mortality continues to be a problem that brings about significant losses for both commercial breeding and scientific research. This review paper discusses the genetic and environmental factors that affect embryo mortality rates in sheep along with the different techniques developed to overcome this issue. Additionally, one of the objectives of this study is to emphasize the importance of the use of time-lapse cinematography and color Doppler ultrasonography as quick and reliable methods for early detection of pregnancy and embryonic death.

Evaluation Of Larval Culture And Conventional Pcr Methods For The Detection Ofstrongylus Vulgaris In Equines Of Iran, Alireza Alborzi, Sara Larki, Abbas Zeinali Jan 2020

Evaluation Of Larval Culture And Conventional Pcr Methods For The Detection Ofstrongylus Vulgaris In Equines Of Iran, Alireza Alborzi, Sara Larki, Abbas Zeinali

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Strongylus vulgaris (S. vulgaris) is known as the equin's most pathogenic nematode due to the extraintestinal migration in mesenteric arterial vessels. Since a few kinds of S. vulgaris can threat the animals' health and working efficiency, high precision and early detection of strongylid nematodes is essential. Traditionally, the larval coproculture method was used frequently for identification of strongylid species. The technique of larval culture is costly, time consuming, and does not have sufficient accuracy and reliability. Here, we critically evaluated the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with larval culture methods for the detection of S. vulgaris eggs in fecal samples. To …

Influence Of Social Rank On Certain Stress Response Variables And Behavioralcharacteristics Of Adult Rams, Eli̇f Ergül Eki̇z, Hülya Yalçintan, Alper Yilmaz, İbrahi̇m Akyazi, Evren Eraslan, Bülent Eki̇z

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Dominance rank within a group can affect the stress level of an animal. However, there is no consensus on whether the dominant or subordinate animals are physiologically more stressed. It was aimed herein to determine the effect of social rank on the stress level and expression of some behaviors of adult Hemsin, Chios, and Karakul rams. According to their dominance index (DI) values, the rams were classified as low-ranked (DI < 0.33; n = 13), medium-ranked (DI: 0.33-0.66; n = 13), and high-ranked (DI > 0.66; n = 13) individuals. The low-ranked rams had lower body weight, body length, chest depth, chest circumference, cannon bone circumference, and tail width than the medium- and high-ranked rams. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the study was to test the possibility of using carcass measurements and joint tissue composition to predict the half-carcass tissue composition of lambs more accurately. With this purpose in mind, 6 different carcass joints (neck, flank, shoulder, ribs, hind limb, and tail) from 42 Kıvırcık male lambs were dissected. In addition, various carcass characteristics were recorded. When carcass characteristics and measurements were used alone in the prediction equations, accuracy (between 37%-68%) was similar to the equations that included only joint dissections (36%-75%). However, when joint dissection and various carcass traits were combined, half-carcass tissue composition was predicted …

Background/aim: CAIPIRINHA is a new technique in abdominal imaging. Pancreatic steatosis (PS) is a subject of increasing scientific interest. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of the isotropic 3D-VIBE- CAIPIRINHA -DIXON technique on a new generation 3-tesla MR unit in the evaluation of PS.Materials and methods: In this retrospective study, the imaging findings of 49 patients with PS and 41 control subjects were examined. The pancreas-to-spleen ratio (PSR), pancreas-to-muscle ratio (PMR), and pancreatic signal intensity index (PSII) were defined as 3 new parameters and these indexes were calculated from the in-phase/out of phase 3D-VIBE- CAIPIRINHA-DIXON images. …
