Effect Of L-Carnitine On Diabetic Neuropathy And Ventricular Dispersion In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Hizir Ulvi̇, Recep Aygül, Recep Demi̇r Jan 2010

Effect Of L-Carnitine On Diabetic Neuropathy And Ventricular Dispersion In Patients With Diabetes Mellitus, Hizir Ulvi̇, Recep Aygül, Recep Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Diabetes is a common cause of polyneuropathy. Cardiac arrhythmias and markedly increased mortality rate have been demonstrated in patients with diabetic neuropathy and also demonstrated that abnormally prolonged QT dispersion interval (QTd) is associated with a higher risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. We investigated the efficacy and tolerability of L-carnitine (LC) in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and ventricular dispersion, mainly by evaluating the effects of treatment on electrophysiological parameters. Materials and methods: We recruited 30 patients with type I or type II diabetes (mean age: 60 ± 9 years, range: 36-75; 18 males, 12 females) meeting clinical …

Prolidase plays an important role in collagen metabolism, matrix remodeling and cell growth. The aim of the study was to comparatively assess the serum prolidase activity in rheumatic and degenerative heart valve diseases. Materials and methods: The study included 26 patients who had undergone valve replacement due to rheumatic etiology (Group …

Preliminary Findings Of Behavioral Patterns In Captive Alpine Musk Deer (Moschus Sifanicus) And Prospects For Future Conservation, Xiuxiang Meng, Hong Yang, Qisen Yang, Zuojian Feng, Xu Peng, Genevieve C. Perkins

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Captive farming of alpine musk deer (Moschus sifanicus) in China has been used for conservation and harvesting of musk since the mid 1950s. Despite this long history, management practices and captive breeding have been primarily based on trial and error due to lack of behavioral and ecological information about this vulnerable species. Understanding behavioral patterns plays a vital part in determining appropriate management systems; hence the aim of this study was to determine the effect of captivity on behavioral patterns of alpine musk deer by comparing wild-caught and the captive-born alpine musk deer. From August 2002 to January 2003, the …

Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 1 January and 28 February 2007. A questionnaire, the Home-Screen Scale (HSS), and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were administered to the elderly subjects. Results: Of all participants, 20.6% had experienced some kind of home injury. Seven participants living alone and 14 living with their families had suffered home injuries, suggesting a statistically significant difference between these 2 groups (P < 0.05). Eleven (14.7%) subjects living in secure housing and 10 (37.0%) living in unsecure housing had suffered home injuries, the difference again being statistically significant (P < 0.05). The aim of this study was to evaluate influences of hormonal changes during rat estrous cycle on airway responsiveness to bronchoconstrictor and bronchodilator agents. Materials and methods: The study was performed in 5 groups of rat tracheal smooth muscle obtained during proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and diestrus phases of the estrous cycle, as well as the ovariectomized group (n:8/group). Cumulative acetylcholine contractions ranging from 10^{-8} to 10^{-3} M bath doses and the cumulative isoproterenol relaxations ranging from 10^{-8} to 10^{-3} M precontracted with 10^{-5} M of acetylcholine were recorded on isolated tracheas placed in a computerized tissue bath system. Results: Acetylcholine-induced …
