Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and leishmaniosis among Kangal dogs on breeding farms in Sivas, Turkey. Serum samples from 50 Kangal dogs without clinical symptoms of disease were tested for anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies with the Sabin Feldman Dye Test (SFDT) and for anti-Leishmania antibodies with the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT). Forty-six out of the 50 dogs were seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii, with titers ranging from 1:16 to 1:1024. Only 1 of the 50 dogs was seropositive for leishmaniosis (titer: 1:128) and 5 had anti-Leishmania antibodies with a titer of 1:64, which was …

Cryosurgical Treatment Of Anal Sac Fistulae In Dogs, Mehmet Sağlam, Ümi̇t Kaya

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Seven dogs of different breed, age, and sex that were diagnosed with anal sac fistulae upon clinical examination constituted the study material. Sedation for the procedure was maintained by means of xylazine hydrochloride administered intramuscularly. The patients were placed in the lateral recumbency position for the insertion into the fistulae of an appropriate probe, selected according to the lesion. Rapid cooling and spontaneous thawing were performed. This procedure was performed twice consecutively. The cooling temperature was adjusted to between -30 and -50 °C. The lesion healed completely between weeks 3 and 6 following the demarcation of necrotic tissue and growth …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aims: Airway remodelling is a characteristic feature of asthma and is a dynamic process involving extracellular matrix (ECM) production and its degradation. In this regard, the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their specific inhibitors known as tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) have been shown to be important in this process. In the present study, transforming growth factor (TGF)-\beta, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels in serum samples of children with stable asthma and healthy controls were evaluated to determine whether these levels show any difference between asthmatic and healthy children and whether or not these levels change with atopic status. Materials and …

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress measured by serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and to evaluate their possible correlation with the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and pneumonia severity index (PSI). Materials and Methods: The PSI, chest X-ray (CXR) scores, and the serum TAC, MDA, and CRP levels were determined in 67 CAP patients on admission and compared to 45 healthy controls. Results: In the whole study population, the TAC level was inversely correlated with CRP levels and WBC counts (r=-0.648, P=0.0001; r=-0.626, P=0.0001, respectively). Lower …

Classification Of Sigmoid Volvulus, S. Selçuk Atamanalp, Bülent Aydinli, Gürkan Öztürk, Mahmut Başoğlu, M. İlhan Yildirgan, Durkaya Ören, Abdul Meci̇t Kantarci

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: The aim of this study was to establish a classification that will aid in the surgical treatment and prognosis of sigmoid volvulus (SV). Materials and Methods: The records of 420 patients with SV who were treated surgically during a 41.5-year period were reviewed retrospectively. The preoperative and operative criteria that were significantly correlated with mortality were determined. Results: Of 420 patients, 68 (16.2%) died. Age over 60 years (P < 0.001), associated disease (P < 0.001), presence of shock (P < 0.001), and presence of sigmoid colon gangrene (P < 0.001) were significantly correlated with mortality. A classification was made using these criteria. Conclusions: Recommended treatment options and potential mortality rates were determined for each class in the new classification based on the evaluation of the present series, our clinical experience, and literature findings. This classification may be helpful in determination of the surgical treatment and prognosis of SV.
