Psychostimulant methamphetamine (METH) is neurotoxic to the brain and, therefore, its misuse leads to neurological and psychiatric disorders. The gene regulatory network (GRN) response to neurotoxic METH binge remains unclear in most brain regions. Here we examined the effects of binge METH on the GRN in the nucleus accumbens, dentate gyrus, Ammon's horn, and subventricular zone in male rats. At 24 h after METH, ~16% of genes displayed altered expression and over a quarter of previously open chromatin regions - parts of the genome where genes are typically active - showed shifts in their accessibility. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study, analysing data from the Swiss national SSI surveillance database with a study period from 2014 to 2018. OBJECTIVE: To compare intravenous (IV) amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (A/CA) to IV cefuroxime plus metronidazole (C + M) for preventing surgical site infections (SSI) in colorectal surgery.

BACKGROUND: Given their spectra that include most Enterobacterales and anaerobes, C + M is commonly recommended as prophylaxis of SSI in colorectal surgery. A/CA offers good coverage of Enterobacterales and anaerobes as well, but, in contrast to C + M, it also includes Enterococcus faecalis which is also isolated from patients with SSI and could trigger anastomotic leakage.

Clinical Characteristics And Outcome Correlates Of Chinese Patients With Takotsubo Syndrome: Results From The First Chinese Takotsubo Syndrome Registry, Tou Kun Chong, Kan Liu, Et Al.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate clinical features and outcomes of Chinese patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS).

METHODS: We established the first Chinese Registry of Takotsubo Syndrome (ChiTTS Registry) and analyzed demographic, clinical, therapeutical, and outcome data to characterize clinical and outcome features of Chinese TTS patients.

RESULTS: In 112 enrolled patients in the ChiTTS registry from 02/01/2016 to 12/28/2021, the mean age was 59.4 ± 18.7 years old, and 27.7% were men. A total of 41.1% patients experienced respiratory and circulatory complications during hospitalization, and 17.3% patients developed cardiogenic shock. Physical triggers, dyspnea, tachycardia, and younger age (< 70 years old) predicted in-hospital complications. The MACCE rate during follow up was 13.9% per patient per year and the rate of all-cause death was 12.8% per patient per year. TTS patients with in-hospital complications developed more long-term MACCE (24.6% vs. 6.6% per patient-year, P < 0.001) and higher all-cause mortality (21.9% vs. 6.6% per patient-year, P = 0.001) than those without. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that more MACCE occurred in TTS patients with tachycardia during 3-year follow-up (HR 4.18; 95% CI 1.80-9.74; log-rank test P < 0.001). Among all medications at discharge, only beta-blocker was associated with reduced long-term MACCE (HR: 0.35; 95% CI: 0.12-0.996; P = 0.049).

This report highlights survival and the patient’s perspective after prolonged venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for COVID-19–related respiratory failure.

A 36-year-old man with COVID-19 presented with fever, anosmia, and hypoxia. After respiratory deterioration necessitating intubation and lung-protective ventilation, he was referred for ECMO. After 3 days of conventional venovenous ECMO, he required multiple creative cannulation configurations. Adequate sedation and recurrent bradycardia were persistent challenges. After 149 consecutive days of ECMO, he recovered native lung function and was weaned from mechanical ventilation.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes distress (DD) describes the unrelenting emotional and behavioral challenges of living with, and caring for someone living with, type 1 diabetes (T1D). We investigated associations between parent-reported and child-reported DD, T1D device use, and child glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in 157 families of school-age children.

Medical advances have made it increasingly possible for spinal cord injury (SCI) survivors to survive decades after the insult. But how SCI affects aging changes and aging impacts the injury process have received limited attention. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are recognized as critical mediators of neuroinflammation after CNS injury, including at a distance from the lesion site. We have previously shown that SCI in young male mice leads to robust changes in plasma EV count and microRNA (miR) content. Inferring gene regulatory networks (GRNs) from single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) data is an important computational question to find regulatory mechanisms involved in fundamental cellular processes. Although many computational methods have been designed to predict GRNs from scRNA-seq data, they usually have high false positive rates and none infer GRNs by directly using the paired datasets of case-versus-control experiments. INTRODUCTION: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) persistence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in real world clinical settings for HIV prevention is suboptimal. New longer-acting formulations of PrEP are becoming available, including injectables, subdermal implants, and other oral medications. These longer-acting formulations have the potential to improve retention among those who have challenges remaining adherent to daily oral PrEP.

METHODS: We interviewed 49 MSM who had initiated but discontinued oral PrEP at three diverse clinics across the United States. We examined participants' perspectives about long-acting PrEP formulations and how long-acting options could affect PrEP use using thematic analysis.

Alzheimer's disease, the most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by tau aggregation and associated with disrupted circadian rhythms and dampened clock gene expression. REV-ERBα is a core circadian clock protein which also serves as a nuclear receptor and transcriptional repressor involved in lipid metabolism and macrophage function. Global REV-ERBα deletion has been shown to promote microglial activation and mitigate amyloid plaque formation. This study aims to determine the association of non-essential trace elements present in follicular fluid, plasma, and urine with reproductive outcomes of women undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidies (PGT-A) and single frozen euploid embryo transfer (SET/FET). This single-center, prospective cohort study included sixty women undergoing ICSI with PGT-A and SET/FET between 2018 and 2019. Oncogenic Yes-associated protein (YAP) 1 fusions have been recently identified in several cases of meningioma mostly involving pediatric patients. The meningiomas harboring YAP1-MAML2, which is the most frequent fusion subtype, exhibit activated YAP1 signaling and share similarities with NF2 (neurofibromatosis type 2 gene) mutant meningiomas. We reported a rare case of atypical intraparenchymal meningioma with YAP1-MAML2 fusion in a 20-year-old male. The patient presented with an episode of seizure without a medical history. MRI revealed a lesion in the right temporal lobe without extra-axial involvement.
