Flowers Or Flora?: Understanding The Effects Of Probiotics On Depression, Nicole Collopy

Senior Theses

The human gut is populated with hundreds of types of bacteria and fungi. In North America, both intestinal and mood disorders are prevalent, presenting health problems that challenge health care professionals and patients alike. A scholarly literature review was conducted to explore this important relationship.

The investigation of the literature revealed that there is an association between gut health disorders and mood disorders, mainly anxiety and depression. This is due to bi-directionality between the brain-gut pathways, meaning that gastrointestinal health may have an effect on mental health and vice versa.

This connection between gut and mood can have substantial implications …

Now, with the availability of 3-D ultrasound data, a lot of research efforts are being devoted to developing 3-D ultrasound strain elastography (USE) systems. Because 3-D motion tracking, a core component in any 3-D USE system, is computationally intensive, a lot of efforts are under way to accelerate 3-D motion tracking. In the literature, the concept of Sum-Table has been used in a serial computing environment to reduce the burden of computing signal correlation, which is the single most computationally intensive component in 3-D motion tracking. In this study, parallel programming using graphics processing units (GPU) is used in conjunction …

Introduction:Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a relatively new strategy for replacing the aortic valve. We elected to review our early experience to see if we could identify clinical characteristics at baseline or immediately following the procedure that would predict death within one year.

Methods:Charts for all patients assigned to receive TAVR procedure at St Mary’s medical center, Huntington, West Virginia between April, 2013 till November, 2016 were identified and reviewed. A total of seventy-two (72) cases were included.

Results: All cause mortality rate at index hospitalization, 30 days, and 12 months was 5.6%(N=4), 6.9%(N=5), 19.4%(N=14) respectively. Stroke …
