Assessment Of Dobhoff Tube Malposition On Radiographs Using Deep Learning, Kevin George, Paras Lakhani, Md

Phase 1

Introduction: Dobhoff tubes (DHT) are narrow-bore flexible devices that deliver enteral nutrition for critically ill patients. Tracheobronchial insertion of DHTs presents a significant risk for pulmonary complications. Thus, DHT insertion requires radiologist confirmation of correct placement with chest x-ray (CXR), increasing clinical delays. To address this, we demonstrate the novel application of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNNs) to automatically and accurately identify DHTs in CXRs in real time.

Methods: 141 de-identified HIPAA compliant frontal view chest radiographs containing DHTs in various positions were obtained. The DHTs were first manually segmented and verified by a board certified radiologist. Images were split …

Introduction: The use of medicinal cannabis for symptom management in cancer patients is a growing area of clinical interest. Past studies have demonstrated cannabis’s potential as an antiemetic and analgesic, but there is still much research to be done on its clinical efficacy. Our study hypothesizes that cancer patients using medicinal cannabis experience subjective improvements in pain, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), and quality of life (QOL) that justify related out-of-pocket costs.

Background: In the United States, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most common performed orthopedic surgery, with over 700,000 cases per year. Overall, 21-25% underwent revision due to instability. Incorrect soft tissue balancing during the procedure can lead to improper alignment, flexion, and extension. Visualization of osteophytes in a 3D manner prior to removal is difficult and poses significant risks for improper balancing on TKA. Purpose: This project aims to create an Electroencephalography (EEG) curriculum that synthesizes the teachings of current publications and faculty expertise within a single digital platform. The goal is to remedy the unmet need for a centralized resource for learners to use when learning EEG interpretation.

Methods: The target learner population is epilepsy and neurophysiology fellows. The platform will be accessible from any computer, tablet, or phone, allowing for mobile, self-paced learning to take place. Purpose: Mobile devices are ubiquitous and serve as an important resource for on-the-spot research about patient questions and conditions. However, even when a device is used to address patient needs, patients and members of the medical team may assume the student is using their phone for non-clinical activities and perceive the student as uninterested and disengaged. Medical students are aware of this potential for misperception, and as such, we designed a study to investigate the attitudes of third and fourth year medical students towards cell phone use on internal medicine rounds.
