The mean nitrotyrosine and 8-isoprostane levels for oxidative stress markers in EBC before and after treatment were 4.5 …

Evidence-Based Homoeopathy: A Case Of Acute Paraphimosis With Balanitis, Chinta Raveendar, Kishan Banoth Sep 2013

Evidence-Based Homoeopathy: A Case Of Acute Paraphimosis With Balanitis, Chinta Raveendar, Kishan Banoth

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Paraphimosis occurs when the foreskin of the uncircumcised or partially circumcised male is retracted behind the glans penis, develops venous and lymphatic congestion and cannot be returned to its normal position. This urological emergency impedes blood flow to the glans penis with potential for permanent damage and gangrene. In infants and young children, paraphimosis usually results from self-manipulation by the child or inappropriate retraction of the foreskin by the caretaker in misguided attempts at cleaning. In the sexually active adolescent or adult male, intercourse is a potential precipitant. Iatrogenic paraphimosis follows cystoscopy or bladder catheterisation if the foreskin is not …

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation, Oxidative Stress, And Inflammation, Mehmet Özaydin Jan 2011

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation, Oxidative Stress, And Inflammation, Mehmet Özaydin

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most common complication of cardiac surgery. It is associated with increased complication rates. Recent trials have suggested that inflammation and oxidative stress have key roles in the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation. Current evidence evaluating the use of antiinflammatory and antioxidant agents, including statins, corticosteroids, N-acetylcysteine, vitamin C, and fish oil, to prevent postoperative atrial fibrillation is promising. However, larger randomized, controlled trials comparing different dose regimens are needed.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 3-benzoyl-1-methyl-4-phenyl-4-piperidinol-hydrochloride (C1), which is a structural and also non-classical isomer of bis Mannich base, bis (3-aryl-3-oxo-propyl) methylamine hydrochlorides (B1), on cyclooxygenase (COX) activities in 48 rats with inflammation by using carrageenan-induced paw edema, and to compare its effect with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Materials and methods: Experimental animals were supplied by the Center of Experimental Research and Practice in Ataturk University. The animals were housed and fed in the laboratory (normal room temparature, food and water) under standard conditions. Rats were randomly assigned to eight groups (n = …

Comparison Of Gliclazide Treatment With Diet Therapy On Acute Phase Protein Levels In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Ramazan Memi̇şoğullari, Fati̇h Akçay, Abdurrahman Coşkun, Uğur Korkmaz Jan 2009

Comparison Of Gliclazide Treatment With Diet Therapy On Acute Phase Protein Levels In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Ramazan Memi̇şoğullari, Fati̇h Akçay, Abdurrahman Coşkun, Uğur Korkmaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aims: It is known that there is a relationship between diabetic complications and chronic inflammation characterized by alterations in circulating acute phase proteins. It has been emphasized that inflammation contributes to diabetic complications and that gliclazide -an antidiabetic sulfonylurea - decreases the development of such complications. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether gliclazide or diet treatment has an effect on serum levels of acute phase reactants, markers of inflammation. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes and 30 clinically healthy subjects were evaluated prospectively. Twenty-six patients were treated with proper diet and daily gliclazide …

The Role Of Cytokines In Bovine Mastitis, Kittisak Ajariyakhajorn Dec 1998

The Role Of Cytokines In Bovine Mastitis, Kittisak Ajariyakhajorn

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Cytokines are protein mediators produced by the immune and nonimmune cells that are involved in the regulation of inflammation and immune responses. The availability of several recombinant bovine cytokines have led to the investigation of the potential of cytokines as prophylactic or therapeutic strategies in the control of bovine mastitis, the most expensive disease affecting the dairy industry. The main goals of cytokine therapy are to enhance the immune response in the mammary gland against pathogenic bacteria, to increase the efficacy of antibiotic treatment, and to enhance the specific immunity of mastitis vaccines. Important cytokines used in mastitis studies are …

Histamine And A Possible Unity Of Autonomous Microcirculatory Dilator Responses: Histamine And Autonomous Dilation, Richard W. Schayer Jan 1968

Histamine And A Possible Unity Of Autonomous Microcirculatory Dilator Responses: Histamine And Autonomous Dilation, Richard W. Schayer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In this paper I will try to show how the proposed intrinsic dilator mechanism may, with due allowance for a variety of modifying factors, underlie the dilator phases of reactive hyperemia, post-exercise hyperemia, hyperemia due to local warmth, autoregulation, vasomotion, inflammation, and shock. These ideas are based on histamine studies (Schayer, 1962, 1963, 1966). However since there is much misunderstanding about histamine, and since the theory can be largely developed without need to identify the dilator, this paper will be presented in two parts. First, interpretation of the above phenomena in terms of intrinsic dilator mechanism will be attempted. Second, …
