Time Dependence Of Self-Assembly Process For The Formation Of Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Nanolayers, Alexandre Dhôtel Aug 2010

Time Dependence Of Self-Assembly Process For The Formation Of Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Nanolayers, Alexandre Dhôtel

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

There is increasing interest in self-assembled materials for energy storage, flexible electronics and hydrophobic barriers. Inorganic/organic hybrid thin films and especially organosilane-based coatings already have demonstrated their ability to achieve those goals. However, some fundamental points of their formation process by molecular self-assembly remain unexplained. Although the literature widely reports the effect of temperature on the final nanostructure, until now, no one has taken into account the importance of time during their synthesis.

The main objective of this study was to improve and complete the understanding of mechanisms responsible for the self-organization of organic/inorganic molecules into a highly ordered, layered …

Uniaxially-Driven Controlled Biaxial Testing Fixture, Fadi K. Abu-Farha, Marwan K. Khraisheh May 2010

Uniaxially-Driven Controlled Biaxial Testing Fixture, Fadi K. Abu-Farha, Marwan K. Khraisheh

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Patents

A uniaxially-driven controlled biaxial testing fixture includes a base, a first coupler mounted to the base, and a load input drive rack mounted for linear movement with respect to the base. A second coupler and a first specimen grip are both mounted to the load input drive rack. Second, third and fourth specimen grips are also mounted for linear movement with respect to the base. First, second and third drive mechanisms connect the load input drive rack to the second, third and fourth specimen grips. Together the four specimen grips are oriented to provide biaxial application of force to a …

Robust Observers And Controllers For Marine Surface Vessels Undergoing Maneuvering And Course-Keeping Tasks, Nassim Khaled Jan 2010

Robust Observers And Controllers For Marine Surface Vessels Undergoing Maneuvering And Course-Keeping Tasks, Nassim Khaled

Wayne State University Dissertations

The dynamic behavior of marine surface vessels is highly nonlinear. Moreover, it is significantly influenced by environmental disturbances induced by winds, random sea waves and currents. To yield a desired response of the ship, the guidance and control system of the ship should be robust to both modeling imprecision and significant environmental disturbances.

The focus of the current work is threefold. First, a six degree-of-freedom nonlinear model for a marine surface vessel is developed. It accounts for the coriolis and centripetal acceleration terms, added mass and wave damping terms, wave excitation forces, so-called "memory" effect terms, nonlinear restoring forces, wind …

A Comparative Study On Fault Detection And Self-Reconfiguration, Ning Ge Jan 2010

A Comparative Study On Fault Detection And Self-Reconfiguration, Ning Ge

ETD Archive

Extended State Observer (ESO) and the Alpha-Beta-Gamma Tracker are introduced and compared. In comparison, the ESO is found to be more noise resistant. The extended state used for the estimation of the general system dynamics in real time makes it suitable for fault detection. Four control schemes are proposed for self-reconfiguration upon fault detection. These schemes are Active Disturbance Rejection Control, Tracker-based Feedback Control, Fuzzy Logic Control and Tracker-based PID Control. To compare their control performance, these schemes are applied to three different applications namely Active Engine Vibration Isolation System, Three-Tank Dynamic System and MEMS Gyroscope System. The advantages and …
