A Study Of The Fundamental Operations Of A Capillary Driven Heat Transfer Device In Both Normal And Low Gravity Part 1-Liquid Slug Formation In Low Gravity, Jeffrey S. Allen, Kevin P. Hallinan, Jack Lekan

Kevin Hallinan

Research has been conducted to observe the operation of a capillary pumped loop (CPL) in both normal and low gravity environments in order to ascertain the causes of device failure. The failures of capillary pumped heat transport devices in low gravity; specifically; evaporator dryout, are not understood and the available data for analyzing the failures is incomplete. To observe failure in these devices an idealized experimental CPL was configured for testing in both a normal-gravity and a low-gravity environment. The experimental test loop was constructed completely of Pyrex tubing to allow for visualization of system operations. Heat was added to …

Effects Of Noise, Reverberation And Foreign Accent On Native And Non-Native Listeners’ Performance Of English Speech Comprehension, Zhao Ellen Peng, Lily M. Wang May 2016

Effects Of Noise, Reverberation And Foreign Accent On Native And Non-Native Listeners’ Performance Of English Speech Comprehension, Zhao Ellen Peng, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

A large number of non-native English speakers may be found in American classrooms, both as listeners and talkers. Little is known about how this population comprehends speech in realistic adverse acoustical conditions. A study was conducted to investigate the effects of background noise level (BNL), reverberation time (RT), and talker foreign accent on native and non-native listeners' speech comprehension, while controlling for English language abilities. A total of 115 adult listeners completed comprehension tasks under 15 acoustic conditions: three BNLs (RC-30, RC-40, and RC-50) and five RTs (from 0.4 to 1.2 s). Fifty-six listeners were tested with speech from native …

An Entrochemical Water Heater, Sanza Kazadi, Sabrina Lin, Kelvin Ye May 2016

An Entrochemical Water Heater, Sanza Kazadi, Sabrina Lin, Kelvin Ye

Sanza Kazadi

Entrochemical systems are systems capable of generating internal thermal gradients through internal
water movements which simultaneously transfer get of vaporization between internal water reservoirs. These systems move to a chemical equilibrium state that generates and maintains a thermal gradient. Entrochemical thermal batteries (ETB) can be constructed which extend the thermal gradient of a single cell through an additive process. Such systems can deliver useful work. Additionally solutions used therein may be recharged passively using environmental heat.

We describe the design and function of a bench-scale water heater capable of heating a small water
reservoir. The system is powered by an …

Compact Single Multistage Distillation, Sanza Kazadi, Brent Usui, Ashley An, Robin B. Zhao

Sanza Kazadi

We report the design and function of a distillation apparatus which uses salt concentration gradients to
drive distillation and desalination of simulated sea water. Utilizing the entrochemical effect, the system
generates an internal thermal gradient. An internal distiller is arranged with the condenser in the cold end of the
entrochemical system and a seawater reservoir in the warm end of the entrochemical system. The heat of
vaporization is recaptured in the cold side of the entrochemical system and re-used. The spent solution in the
entrochemical system can be recharged using evaporation, making the surrounding thermal energy the source
of energy …

Assessment Of Noise-Induced Annoyance By Tones In Noise From Building Mechanical Systems, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang Apr 2016

Assessment Of Noise-Induced Annoyance By Tones In Noise From Building Mechanical Systems, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

Prominent tones in noise generated by mechanical equipment in buildings can cause complaints from occupants in buildings. The ISO 1996-2 and ANSI S1.13 standards describe methodologies and metrics to quantify tonality perception, but the influence of tones in noise on human annoyance and performance is not fully understood yet. This paper investigates annoyance responses of humans while exposed to background noise with tonal components. Twenty participants completed digit span tasks while exposed to noise signals with differing levels of tones and overall loudness. Subjects were also asked to rate their annoyance after completing tasks under each noise signal. The subjective …

The Impact Of Building Acoustics On Speech Comprehension And Student Achievement, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

The movement for improved classroom acoustics has primarily been grounded on studies that show how building acoustics (i.e. background noise levels and room reverberation) affect speech intelligibility, as determined by speech recognition tests. What about actual student learning, though? If students do not understand each spoken word in the classroom perfectly, can they still manage to achieve high scholastic success? This presentation will review two recent studies conducted at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, linking classroom acoustic conditions to student learning outcomes and speech comprehension (rather than simply recognition). In the first, acoustic measurements in two public school districts …

Determining Annoyance Thresholds Of Tones In Noise, Jennifer M. Francis, Joonhee Lee, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

Building services equipment often produces noise signatures with significant tones in them that can lead to complaints in the built environment. Previous studies have investigated prominence levels of assorted tonal frequencies, but it is still unclear what prominence of the tones across varying tonal frequencies can lead to human annoyance. This project seeks to apply two different methods towards defining annoyance thresholds of tones in noise at two tonal frequencies: 125 Hz and 500 Hz. In the first, subjects are asked to perform a task, while exposed to ten minutes of a broadband noise spectrum with a specific level of …

Effects Of Room Acoustics On Comprehension Of Foreign-Accented Speech By Native And Non-Native English-Speaking Listeners, Zhao Peng, Kristin E. Hanna, Brenna N. Boyd, Lily M. Wang Apr 2016

Effects Of Room Acoustics On Comprehension Of Foreign-Accented Speech By Native And Non-Native English-Speaking Listeners, Zhao Peng, Kristin E. Hanna, Brenna N. Boyd, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

In a previous study by the authors, reverberation time (RT) and background noise level (BNL) were both found to have negative effects on native and non-native English-speaking listeners in comprehending English speech produced by native American-English-speaking talkers. Comprehension scores were adjusted for listeners’ baseline English proficiency levels. In the present study, instead of native English-speaking talkers, two native Mandarin Chinese talkers (one male, one female) with similar English spoken proficiency were recruited to produce the same speech materials used in the previous study. A similar methodology was adopted to conduct speech comprehension tests on three groups of listeners: 1) native …

Quantification And Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Measured Room Impulsed Responses, Hyun Hong, Lily M. Wang Apr 2016

Quantification And Subjective Perception Of Varying Reflection Densities In Measured Room Impulsed Responses, Hyun Hong, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

This project focuses on quantifying and testing the subjective perception of reflection densities, or the number of reflections per second, from different room impulse responses. The widely used room acoustic metric, reverberation time, is linked to the perceived reverberation in a room. Two different rooms having the same reverberation time, though, can have different reflection densities in their room impulse responses, and this difference in reflection density may affect how listeners perceive spatial impression in rooms. To investigate how sensitive humans are to a change of reflection density, this paper first reviews assorted parameters for quantifying reflection density from measured …

Room Acoustic Effects On Speech Comprehension Of English-As-Second-Language Talkers And Listeners Versus Native-English-Speaking Talkers And Listeners, Lily M. Wang Apr 2016

Room Acoustic Effects On Speech Comprehension Of English-As-Second-Language Talkers And Listeners Versus Native-English-Speaking Talkers And Listeners, Lily M. Wang

Lily M Wang

Approximately 21% of the children in the United States school system speak a language other than English at home, but are being taught in English at school. English is additionally being used more and more often as a common language in international settings, even though participants at these international events again are not native English speakers. How do adverse room acoustic environments, including higher background noise levels and longer reverberation times, impact English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) talkers and listeners versus native English-speaking talkers and listeners? This presentation focuses on two recent studies at the University of Nebraska that investigate how assorted room …

In this study an appropriate expression to estimate the output power of solar chimney power plant systems (SCPPS) was considered. Recently several mathematical models of SCPPS were derived, studied for a variety of boundary conditions, and compared against CFD calculations. An important concern for modeling SCPPS is the accuracy of the derived pressure drop and output power equation. To elucidate the matter, axisymmetric CFD analysis was performed to model the solar chimney power plant and calculate the output power for different available solar radiation. Both analytical and numerical results were compared against the available experimental data from the historical Manzanares …

Detailed And Compact Combustion Kinetic Models For Iso-Dodecane And Gevo Alcohol-To-Jet (Atj) Alternative Fuel, Francis M. Haas, Sang Hee Won, Frederick L. Dryer Feb 2016

Detailed And Compact Combustion Kinetic Models For Iso-Dodecane And Gevo Alcohol-To-Jet (Atj) Alternative Fuel, Francis M. Haas, Sang Hee Won, Frederick L. Dryer

Francis (Mac) Haas

Over a broad range of conditions and experimental configurations, recent experimental work has shown quantitative similarities between the pre-vaporized combustion behaviors of iso-dodecane (iC12: 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane), iso-octane (iC8: 2,2,4-trimethylpentane), iso-cetane (iC16: 2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane), and a 50/50 (molar) iC8/iC16 mixture. Such similarity – typically within experimental uncertainties – suggests that these fuels share a significant subset of combustion chemistry related to fuel destruction into nearly equal fluxes of iso-C4 fragments. This proposition is used to develop a compact (43 species) kinetic model to describe iC12 combustion by using detailed chemistry models for iC16 and iC8, since at present, no detailed iC12 oxidation model …

Novel Integrated Solar-Nuclear Combined Cycle Power Plant, Nima Fathi, Patrick Mckdaniel, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Matthew Robinson, Peter Vorobieff, Salvador Rodriguez, Cassiano De Oliveira Feb 2016

Novel Integrated Solar-Nuclear Combined Cycle Power Plant, Nima Fathi, Patrick Mckdaniel, Seyed Sobhan Aleyasin, Matthew Robinson, Peter Vorobieff, Salvador Rodriguez, Cassiano De Oliveira

Nima Fathi

Rather than dumping the waste heat rejected by a nuclear power plant to a wet cooling tower, a better solution may be to connect it to a solar chimney power plant system (SCPPS). This is particularly true in arid regions. The SCPPS serves the function of a dry cooling tower but also produces additional electrical power. In a solar chimney power plant, the energy of buoyant hot air is converted to electrical energy. This solar power plant includes a collector at ground level, covered with a transparent roof that collects the solar radiation, heating the air inside and the ground …

An Immersed Boundary Geometric Preprocessor For Arbitrarily Complex Terrain And Geometry, Inanc Senocak, Micah Sandusky, Rey Deleon, Derek Wade, Kyle Felzien, Marianna Budnikova

Inanc Senocak

There is a growing interest to apply the immersed boundary method to compute wind fields over arbitrarily complex terrain. The computer implementation of an immersed boundary module into an existing flow solver can be accomplished with minor modifications to the rest of the computer program. However, a versatile preprocessor is needed at the first place to extract the essential geometric information pertinent to the immersion of an arbitrarily complex terrain inside a 3D Cartesian mesh. Errors in the geometric information can negatively impact the correct implementation of the immersed boundary method as part of the solution algorithm. Additionally, the distance …

Nonlinear 3d Finite Element Modeling For Structural Failure Analysis Of Concrete Sleepers/Bearers At An Urban Turnout Diamond, Minh Vu, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Mario Attard Jan 2016

Nonlinear 3d Finite Element Modeling For Structural Failure Analysis Of Concrete Sleepers/Bearers At An Urban Turnout Diamond, Minh Vu, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Mario Attard

Sakdirat Kaewunruen

Railway urban turnout is a special track system used to divert a train from a particular direction or a particular track onto other directions or other tracks. It is a structural grillage system that consists of steel rails, points (or called “switches”), crossings, steel plates, rubber pads, insulators, fasteners, screw spikes, beam bearers (either tim- ber, polymer, steel, or concrete), ballast and formation. There are two types of turnouts, a conventional turnout and a tangential turnout. Standard conventional turnouts are designed typically for straight main line track. The combination of switch length, heel angle, and cross rate defines the turnout …

Effect Of The Distribution Of Faults And Operating Conditions On Afdd Performance Evaluations, David Yuill, James E. Braun

David Yuill

Automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) tools are used to identify degradation faults that reduce
the performance and life of air-conditioning equipment. A recent methodology has been developed to
evaluate the performance of AFDD tools. The methodology involves feeding a library of input data to
an AFDD protocol and categorizing the results. The current paper describes a study that has been
conducted to assess the effect of using various input data sets in the evaluations. These input data sets
include different distributions of fault type, fault intensity, and operating temperatures. Case study
evaluations of three AFDD protocols in current widespread …

The Report, Biomass as Feedstock for a Bioenergy and Bioproducts Industry: The Technical Feasibility of a Billion-Ton Annual Supply (generally referred to as the Billion-Ton Study or 2005 BTS), was an estimate of “potential” biomass within the contiguous United States based on numerous assumptions about current and future inventory and production capacity, availability, and technology. In the 2005 BTS, a strategic analysis was undertaken to determine if U.S. agriculture and forest resources have the capability to potentially produce at least one billion dry tons of biomass annually, in a sustainable manner—enough to displace approximately 30% of the country’s present petroleum …

The high temperature mechanical property of separators is very important for safety of lithium-ion batteries. However, the mechanical integrity of polymeric separators in lithium-ion batteries at elevated temperatures is still not well characterized. In this paper, the temperature dependent micro-scale morphology change of PP (polypropylene)-PE (polyethylene)-PP sandwiched separators (Celgard 2325) was studied by in-situ high temperature surface imaging using an atomic force microscope (AFM) coupled with power spectral density (PSD) analysis and digital image correlation (DIC) technique. Both PSD and DIC analysis results show that the PP phase significantly closes its pores by means of dilation of the nanofibrils surrounding …

A Platinum Nanowire Network As A Highly Effective Current Collector For Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Hanping Ding, Xingjian Xue

Xingjian "Chris" Xue

We report the fabrication and evaluation of a platinum nanowire network as a highly efficient current collector for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The ink of carbon-black supported platinum nanoparticles was sprayed onto the cathode. After firing, the carbon black was oxidized and disappeared as carbon dioxide gas while the platinum nanoparticles connect with one another, forming a tree-branch-like nanowire network. The diameters of the nanowires range from 100 nm to 400 nm. Compared to a conventional platinum paste current collector, the polarization resistance of the PrBaCo2O5+δ (PBCO) cathode with a nanowire current collector was reduced …

Innovative Research Publications IRP India

Here in this paper a tilting mechanism is carried out for a normal fuel run track car to give it the flexibility of a motor cycle. This feature enables the car to tilt in to the curve while negotiating it. Our analysis shows that to increase the maximum curve at speed by more than 50%. The method we have used is a simple mechanical tilting system controlled by a simple DC stepper motor which is controlled electronically. This tilting mechanism if successful should dramatically increase the maximum speed in curves. This should also provide the advantages of increased passenger comfort …
