It is common practice in design work to use bolts as a means of attaching load carrying members. In many instances it is not possible to locate the bolt so the line of action of the external load will pass through the bolt axis. As a result, there are secondary loads, resulting from the eccentricity of the load paths, which the bolt must resist in addition to the primary loads.

Existing specifications used in vibration testing are based on envelopes of many points of fixed frequency and vibration amplitude measured at specific points in aircraft. In addition these specifications are to some extent written to be compatible with the two common types of vibration test machines, the reaction or constant-displacement type and the electromagnetic or constant-acceleration type. It was considered by the writer that characteristics of oscilloscope wave forms representing the varying pressures taking place in the CFR engine cylinder might provide an index to octane ratings of gasoline. Obtaining pressure wave forms on the oscilloscope required some medium for providing an electrical signal in response to engine cylinder pressures. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the application of airplane type controls to the hydrofoil boat would produce a stable craft that would be safe to operate. The secondary purpose of this study was to determine if a human operator could respond to changes in the boat's attitude brought on by wave action or other factors in time to keep the craft running in a desirable operating condition. Finally, the commercial possibilities were to be determined by the performance of the prototype.

For the past several years, the use of pumice as a light weight aggregate building material has been increasing. At first, it was used only in the construction of building blocks. Recently, however, monolithic pumice concrete homes has been constructed in several New Mexico housing projects. One of the larger of these has been completed at Sandia Base in Albuquerque while still another is contemplated for Los Alamos, New Mexico.
