Wavelet Factorization Via A Homogenization Analogy For Solutions Of Linear Systems, Andrea Van Sickle
Wavelet Factorization Via A Homogenization Analogy For Solutions Of Linear Systems, Andrea Van Sickle
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A system of linear equations can be solved using a factorization method that produces a wavelet structure and is akin to a homogenization process used in determining the solution of differential equations. The method is dependant on the particular structure of Hadamard matrices and their implementation in a similarity transform. This paper details the development of such a method for systems of size 2n x 2n, including establishing the theoretical underpinnings necessary to define an orthogonal transform. Also, we present the development of an algorithm to implement the method for a simple 2 x 2 system, which will then be …
Simulation Study Of Estimation And Inference In Factor Analysis: Normal And Non-Normal Noise Distributions, Ping Zhang
Simulation Study Of Estimation And Inference In Factor Analysis: Normal And Non-Normal Noise Distributions, Ping Zhang
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Objective: To study the estimation and inference m factor analyses when the data have normal or non-normal noise distributions.
Methods: Population data were created in package R with a specified number of factors, factor structure and observable variables with known loadings. Then, repeated simple random samples (SRS's) were taken from the population, independently. The maximum likelihood method with varimax rotation was used to perform factor analysis and inference on each sampled dataset. Factor loadings were estimated to determine if the estimation of the loadings was (approximately) unbiased and/or efficient for each specified population and chi-square x2-statistics were obtained to test …
Special Classification Models For Lichens In The Pacific Northwest, Janeen Ardito
Special Classification Models For Lichens In The Pacific Northwest, Janeen Ardito
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
A common problem in ecological studies is that of determining where to look for rare species. This paper shows how statistical models, such as classification trees, may be used to assist in the design of probability-based surveys for rare species using information on more abundant species that are associated with the rare species. This model assisted approach to survey design involves first building models for the more abundant species. The models are then used to determine stratifications for the rare species that are associated with the more abundant species. The goal of this approach is to increase the number of …
Wavelet Analysis Of Magnetometer Data, Inga Maslova
Wavelet Analysis Of Magnetometer Data, Inga Maslova
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The wavelet analysis of the ground-based magnetograms' records is performed in this project. We explore the records from low, medium and high latitude stations during a calm period and a stormy one. Different methods for detecting and estimating the tail index of heavy-tailed distributions are compared. A detailed analysis of the properties of the distributions of the discrete wavelet transform coefficients of magnetometer data is presented. Conclusions on the tail index estimation techniques and the distribution of the discrete wavelet transform coefficients are made.

Determining The Effects Of Psychosocial Interventions On Quality Of Life For Cancer Patients: Analysis Of Pilot Data And Recommendations For Full Experimental Design And Statistical Analysis, Sarah Julia Thomas
Honors Capstone Projects - All
The Hematology and Oncology Specialists Foundation plans to carry out a scientific study to assess the effects of several of its psychosocial interventions, or “wellness programs,” on the quality of life (QoL) experienced by cancer patients. Pilot data showed that participation in a meditation program significantly reduced the symptoms of stress experienced by the patients (t = 2.70, p = 0.011), and that participation in psychological counseling significantly reduced the anxiety and depression levels of the patients (t = 5.33, p = 0.002; t = 8.70, p < 0.001, respectively).
The full scale study has a 6×2 factorial design with six treatments (non-participation, …

Since the cost of petroleum fluctuates widely, it is advisable to optimize extraction of oil and other hydrocarbon products form existing oil reserves. Because of the costs involved in recovering oil from a reservoir, predicting reservoir performance can be a useful tool for determining whether continued extraction might be profitable. This can be done using computer simulations of the physical processes involved such as pressure/head, fluid velocities, and so forth. Fluid flow within a reservoir occurs at a very small scale relative to the size of the reservoir. This size difference makes performing simulations at the physically appropriate scale unfeasible. …
Estimation, Testing, And Monitoring Of Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroskedastic Time Series, Aonan Zhang
Estimation, Testing, And Monitoring Of Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroskedastic Time Series, Aonan Zhang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
We study in this dissertation Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroskedastic (GARCH) time series. The research focuses on squared GARCH sequences. Our main results are as follows:
1. We compare three methods of constructing confidence intervals for sample autocorrelations of squared returns modeled by models from the GARCH family. We compare the residual bootstrap, block bootstrap and subsampling methods. The residual bootstrap based on the standard GARCH(l,1) model is seen to perform best. Confidence intervals for cross-correlations of a bivariate GARCH model are also studied.
2. We study a test to discriminate between long memory and volatility changes in financial returns data. …

The purpose of this study was to analyze the 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress data to identify the relationship between calculator use and student performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress Mathematics Assessment. This general purpose includes several sub issues. In addition to being interested in the overall relationship between use and National Assessment of Educational Progress achievement (including the effort to control for spurious factors), this study examined the contextual factors that moderate the impact of calculator use. Similarly, it analyzed the relationship between calculator use and student performance on calculator-allowed and calculator-restricted items, as well as …
Some Nonparametric And Semiparametric Methods For Discriminant Analysis., Anil Kumar Ghosh Dr.
Some Nonparametric And Semiparametric Methods For Discriminant Analysis., Anil Kumar Ghosh Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Discriminant analysis (see e.g., Devijver and Kittler, 1982; Duda, Hart and Stork, 2000; Hastle, Tibahirani and Friedman, 2001) deals with the separation of different groups of obaervationa and allocation of a new oboervation to one of the previously delined grouga. In a J-class discriminant analysis problem, we usually hae a training sample of the form {(xk, ck) : k = 1,2,...,N}, where xk = (Ik1,Ik2,...J) is a d-dimensional measarement vector, and ca € {1,2,...,J} is its class label. On the basis of thia training sample, one aims to form a decision rule d(x) : Rd + (1,2,...,J} for clasifying the …

Ecological Niching In An Interactive Simulation, Ryan T. Webb
Ecological Niching In An Interactive Simulation, Ryan T. Webb
Honors Theses
Our goal is to create a simulation platform for the study of ecological niching that can be extended to suit the needs of biological research. Ecological niching and the accompanying evolutionary process of speciation are difficult to observe in situ, which makes them prime candidates for study via the methods of computer simulation. To this end, we have created an interactive, real-time ecosystem simulation based on the standard predator/prey interaction model, in which interacting populations of organisms exhibit swarming behavior. We hope to provide the basic simulation components necessary to bring about niching and speciation, that may be extended for …
Obstruction Sets For Classes Of Cubic Graphs, Joshua Hughes
Obstruction Sets For Classes Of Cubic Graphs, Joshua Hughes
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation establishes two theorems which characterize the set of minimal obstructions for two classes of graphs. A minimal obstruction for a class of graphs is a graph that is not in the class but every graph that it properly contains, under some containment relation, is in the class. In Chapter 2, we provide a characterization of the class of cubic outer-planar graphs in terms of its minimal obstructions which are also called cubic obstructions in this setting. To do this, we first show that all the obstructions containing loops can be obtained from the complete set of loopless obstructions …
Developing A B -Tagging Algorithm Using Soft Muons At Level-3 For The Dø Detector At Fermilab, Mayukh Das
Developing A B -Tagging Algorithm Using Soft Muons At Level-3 For The Dø Detector At Fermilab, Mayukh Das
Doctoral Dissertations
The current data-taking phase of the DØ detector at Fermilab, called Run II, is designed to aid the search for the Higgs Boson. The neutral Higgs is postulated to have a mass of 117 GeV. One of the channels promising the presence of this hypothetical particle is through the decay of b-quark into a muon. The process of identifying a b-quark in a jet using muon as a reference is b-tagging with a muon tag.
At the current data taking and analysis rate, it will take long to reach the process of identifying valid events. The triggering mechanism of the …
The Straggling Green's Function Method For Ion Transport, Steven Andrew Walker
The Straggling Green's Function Method For Ion Transport, Steven Andrew Walker
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
For many years work has been conducted on developing a concise theory and method for HZE ion transport capable of being validated in the laboratory. Previous attempts have ignored dispersion and energy downshift associated with nuclear fragmentation and energy and range straggling. Here we present a Green's function approach to ion transport that incorporates these missing elements. This work forms the basis for a new version of GRNTRN, a Green's function transport code. Comparisons of GRNTRN predictions and laboratory results for an 56Fe ion beam with average energy at the target of one GeV/amu or more are presented for …
Structure Preserving Algorithms For Computing The Symplectic Singular Value Decom Position, Archara Chaiyakarn
Structure Preserving Algorithms For Computing The Symplectic Singular Value Decom Position, Archara Chaiyakarn
Dissertations
In this thesis we develop two types of structure preserving Jacobi algorithms for com puting the symplectic singular value decomposition of real symplectic matrices and complex symplectic matrices. Unlike general purpose algorithms, these algorithms produce symplectic structure in all factors of the singular value decomposition.
Our first algorithm uses the relation between the singular value decomposition and the polar decomposition to reduce the problem of finding the symplectic singular value decomposition to th a t of calculating the structured spectral decomposition of a doubly structured m atrix. A Jacobi-like m ethod is developed to compute this doubly structured spectral decomposition. …

Stratification And Domination In Graphs And Digraphs, Ralucca M. Gera
Dissertations
In this thesis we combine the idea of stratification with the one of domination in graphs and digraphs, respectively.
A graph is 2-stratified if its vertex set is partitioned into two classes, where the vertices in one class are colored red and those in the other class are colored blue. Let F be a 2-stratified graph rooted at some blue vertex v . An F -coloring of a graph G is a red-blue coloring of the vertices of G in which every blue vertexu belongs to a copy of F rooted at u . The F -domination number γ …
A Numerical Method For Obtaining An Optimal Temperature Distribution In A 3d Triple-Layered Cylindrical Skin Structure, Le Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
In recent years, it has been interesting to research hyperthermia combined with radiation and cytotoxic drugs to enhance the killing of tumors. The crucial problem is that when heating the tumor tissues, one needs to keep the surrounding normal tissue below a temperature that will produce harm. Thus, it is important to obtain the temperature field of the entire treatment region. The objective of this dissertation is to develop a numerical model for obtaining an optimal temperature distribution in a 3D triple-layered cylindrical skin structure. To this end, we pre-specify the temperatures to be obtained at the center and perimeter …
Global Optimality Conditions In Mathematical Programming And Optimal Control, Pariwat Pacheenburawaa
Global Optimality Conditions In Mathematical Programming And Optimal Control, Pariwat Pacheenburawaa
Dissertations
We derive new first-order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions characterizing global minimizers in mathematical programming and optimal controlproblems. These conditions are based on level sets of an objective functional and they do not assume special structure of a problem (convexity, linearity, etc.). For a mathematical programming problem of minimization of a smooth functional on some compact convex set with equality nonlinear constraints, we derive first-order optimality conditions in the form of a generalized Lagrange multiplier rule. This rule should hold for any point from the level set of the objective functional corresponding to a global minimizer. We demonstrate that these …
Statistical Analysis Of Longitudinal And Multivariate Discrete Data, Deepak Mav
Statistical Analysis Of Longitudinal And Multivariate Discrete Data, Deepak Mav
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Correlated multivariate Poisson and binary variables occur naturally in medical, biological and epidemiological longitudinal studies. Modeling and simulating such variables is difficult because the correlations are restricted by the marginal means via Fréchet bounds in a complicated way. In this dissertation we will first discuss partially specified models and methods for estimating the regression and correlation parameters. We derive the asymptotic distributions of these parameter estimates. Using simulations based on extensions of the algorithm due to Sim (1993, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, 47, pp. 1–10), we study the performance of these estimates using infeasibility, coverage probabilities of the …

An image is a recorded replication of natural scene or objects using suitable sensor and recording media. The visual quality of the recorded image may be enhanced using various types of low-level processing namely noise smoothing, contrast enhancement. The images of the same scene recorded by several sensors reveal more inforination but in their own respective ways. This advantage of multi-sensor imaging system is real- ized through the fusion of the multimodal images. One more important higher-level processing is segmentation where the image is decomposed into a set of meaningful regions ( e.g. objects and background). An image, in general, …

This thesis is composed of chapters 1 to 5. In Chapter 1, we formally define SDLCP and give some examples of SDLCP and show that SDLCP is a special case of variational inequality problem. Also we show that LCP is indeed a special case of SDLCP. Later section of this chapter deals with definitions and notations. In Chapter 2, we are concerned with the results which have been obtained in an effort to generalize the P-matrix condition of LCP to SDLCP. It is known that a matrix M is a P-matrix if and only if M does not re verse the …
Scattering Matrix Analysis Of Photonic Crystals, Valeriy Lukyanov
Scattering Matrix Analysis Of Photonic Crystals, Valeriy Lukyanov
Dissertations
Using a scattering matrix approach we analyze and study the scattering and transmission of waves through a two-dimensional photonic crystal which consists of a periodic array of parallel rods with circular cross sections. Without making any assumptions about normal incidence, single mode propagation, and sufficient inter-scatter separation in the direction of propagation, we show how to compute the transmission and reflection coefficients of these periodic structures. The method is based on the computation of a generalized scattering matrix for one column of the periodic structure.
We also develop an analytical method to analyze and to study the scattering and transmission …

On Some Generalized Transforms For Signal Decomposition And Reconstruction., Yumnam Singh Dr.
Doctoral Theses
In this thesis, we propose two new subband transforms entitled ISITRA and YKSK transforms and their possible applications in image compression and encryption. Both these transforms are developed based on a common model of multiplication known as Bino’s model of multiplication. ISITRA is a convolution based transforms i.e., that both forward and inverse transform of ISITRA is based on convolution as in DWT or 2-channel filter bank. However, it is much more general than the existing DWT or 2-channel filter bank scheme in the sense that it we can get different kinds of filters in addition to the filters specified …

Essays On Dynamic Disequilibrium Models., Arpita Dhar Dr.
Doctoral Theses
The present dissertation is devoted to the analysis of some problems of economic growth in the framework of what has been called Disequilibrium model.Studies on economic growth have been mostly confined, with few exceptions, to the analysis of equilibrium models. But in reality there are cases where the concept of equilibrium may not be relevant and hence a disequilibrium approach is needed. The present thesis is concerned with analysing some theoretical and empirical aspects of the problem of economic growth in a disequilibrium framework. At the theoretical level, the objective has been to re-examine the conclusions of some existing equilibrium …

The Hellmann-Feynman theorem is presented together with certain allied theorems. The origin of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem in quantum physical chemistry is described. The theorem is stated with proof and with discussion of applicability and reliability. Some adaptations of the theorem to the study of the variation of zeros of special functions and orthogonal polynomials are surveyed. Possible extensions are discussed.
The Scintillation Index In Moderate To Strong Turbulence For The Gaussian Beam Wave Along A Slant Path, Fredrick Eugene Thomas
The Scintillation Index In Moderate To Strong Turbulence For The Gaussian Beam Wave Along A Slant Path, Fredrick Eugene Thomas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Scintillation is one of the most common statistics in the literature of mathematical modeling of laser propagation through random media. One approach to estimating scintillation is through the Rytov approximation, which is limited to weak atmospheric turbulence. Recently, an improvement of the Rytov approximation was developed employing a linear filter function technique. This modifies the Rytov approximation and extends the validity into the moderate to strong regime. In this work, an expression governing scintillation of a Gaussian beam along an uplink slant path valid in all regimes of turbulence is presented, as well as results for the limiting cases of …
Decision Theory Classification Of High-Dimensional Vectors Based On Small Samples, David Bradshaw
Decision Theory Classification Of High-Dimensional Vectors Based On Small Samples, David Bradshaw
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, we review existing classification techniques and suggest an entirely new procedure for the classification of high-dimensional vectors on the basis of a few training samples. The proposed method is based on the Bayesian paradigm and provides posterior probabilities that a new vector belongs to each of the classes, therefore it adapts naturally to any number of classes. Our classification technique is based on a small vector which is related to the projection of the observation onto the space spanned by the training samples. This is achieved by employing matrix-variate distributions in classification, which is an entirely new …
