A Center-Unstable Manifold Theorem For Parametrically Excited Surface Waves, Larry Turyn Jan 1996

A Center-Unstable Manifold Theorem For Parametrically Excited Surface Waves, Larry Turyn

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

When fluid in a rectangular tank sits upon a platform which is oscillating with sufficient amplitude, surface waves appear in the ''Faraday resonance.'' Scientists and engineers have done bifurcation analyses which assume that there is a center manifold theory using a finite number of excited spatial modes. We establish such a center manifold theorem for Xiao-Biao Lin's model in which potential flow is assumed but an artificial dissipation term is included in the system of partial differential equations on the free surface. We use interpolation spaces developed by da Prate and Grisvard, establish maximal regularity for a family of evolution …

Asymptotic Conservation Laws In Classical Field Theory, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre Jan 1996

Asymptotic Conservation Laws In Classical Field Theory, Ian M. Anderson, Charles G. Torre

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

A new, general, field theoretic approach to the derivation of asymptotic conservation laws is presented. In this approach asymptotic conservation laws are constructed directly from the field equations according to a universal prescription which does not rely upon the existence of Noether identities or any Lagrangian or Hamiltonian formalisms. The resulting general expressions of the conservation laws enjoy important invariance properties and synthesize all known asymptotic conservation laws, such as the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner energy in general relativity.

On The Structure Of The Deflagration For The Generalized Reaction-Rate Model, William B. Bush, L. Krishnamurthy Jan 1996

On The Structure Of The Deflagration For The Generalized Reaction-Rate Model, William B. Bush, L. Krishnamurthy

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

The structure of the deflagration is examined by means of an asymptotic analysis of the physical-plane boundary-value problem, with Lewis-Semenov number unity, in the limit of the activation-temperature ratio, β = Ta/Tb, greater than order unity, for the generalized reaction-rate-model case of (1) the heat- addition-temperature ratio, α = (Tb — Tu)/Tu, of order unity [where Ta, Tb, and Tu are the activation, adiabatic-flame (and/or burned-gas), and unburned-gas temperatures, respectively]; and (2) the exponent, a, which characterizes the pre-exponential thermal dependence of the reaction-rate term, unity. This examination indicates that the deflagration has a four-region structure. To obtain a uniformly …

Cardinal Invariants Concerning Extendable And Peripherally Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 1996

Cardinal Invariants Concerning Extendable And Peripherally Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Let F be a family of real functions, F ⊆ R R . In the paper we will examine the following question. For which families F ⊆ R R does there exist g : R → R such that f + g ∈ F for all f ∈ F? More precisely, we will study a cardinal function A(F) defined as the smallest cardinality of a family F ⊆ R R for which there is no such g. We will prove that A(Ext) = A(PR) = c + and A(PC) = 2c , where Ext, PR and PC stand for the …

Structured Eigenvectors, Interlacing, And Matrix Completions, Brenda K. Kroschel Jan 1996

Structured Eigenvectors, Interlacing, And Matrix Completions, Brenda K. Kroschel

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation presents results from three areas of applicable matrix analysis: structured eigenvectors, interlacing, and matrix completion problems. Although these are distinct topics, the structured eigenvector results provide connections.;It is a straightforward matrix calculation that if {dollar}\lambda{dollar} is an eigenvalue of A, x an associated structured eigenvector and {dollar}\alpha{dollar} the set of positions in which x has nonzero entries, then {dollar}\lambda{dollar} is also an eigenvalue of the submatrix of A that lies in the rows and columns indexed by {dollar}\alpha{dollar}. We present a converse to this statement and apply the results to interlacing and to matrix completion problems. Several corollaries …

Macroelements And Orthogonal Multiresolutional Analysis, Jonathan M. Corbett '96 Jan 1996

Macroelements And Orthogonal Multiresolutional Analysis, Jonathan M. Corbett '96

Honors Projects

Orthogonal multiresolutional wavelet analysis in a two dimension setting furnishes a basis for wavelet analysis. Bernstein-Bezier polynomials over simplexes provide elegant expressions of the necessary and sufficient conditions for a shift invariant space generating an orthogonal multiresolution analysis.

The B-Spline Wavelet Recurrence Relation And B-Spline Wavelet Interpolation, Patrick J. Crowley '96 Jan 1996

The B-Spline Wavelet Recurrence Relation And B-Spline Wavelet Interpolation, Patrick J. Crowley '96

Honors Projects

In most signal processing applications, a given range of data is best described by a set of local characteristics as opposed to a single global characteristic. In image processing, for example, a region of an image that contains numerous edges is best described as a region whose pixel color values change abruptly, i.e., they are not continuous values of color. A region of constant color, or gradually changing color, is best described as a region whose pixel values are constant, or whose values increase linearly by some factor. It is advantageous to represent this data with signals capable of adapting …

An Analysis Of Shewhart Quality Control Charts To Monitor Both The Mean And Variability, Keith Jacob Barrs Jan 1996

An Analysis Of Shewhart Quality Control Charts To Monitor Both The Mean And Variability, Keith Jacob Barrs

Legacy ETDs

When monitoring the mean of a continuous quality measure it is often recommended a separate chart be used to monitor the variability. These charts are traditionally designed separately. This project considers them together as a combined charting procedure and gives recommendations for their design. This is based on an average run length (ARL) analysis. The run length distribution is determined using two methods both based on a Markov chain approach.

Combinatorics And Campus Security, Arthur T. Benjamin

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

One day I received electronic mail from our director of campus security [Gilbraith 1993]:

"I have a puzzle for you that has practical applications for me. I need to know how many different combinations there are for our combination locks. A lock has 5 buttons. In setting the combination you can use only 1button or as many as 5. Buttons may be pressed simultaneously and / or successively, but the same button cannot be used more than once in the same combination.

I had a student (obviously not a math major) email me that there are only 120 possibilities, but …

Modular Spaces And K-Widths, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Grzegorz Lewicki

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we show that the ball measure of noncompactness of a modular space Xp is equal to the limit of its K -widths when p is a left continuous, s-convex modular function, without any ∆2-condition. We also obtain a similar result for SF-spaces, when the SF-norm N is uniformly continuous.

On Noninvertible Mappings Of The Plane: Eruptions, Lora Billings, James H. Curry Jan 1996

On Noninvertible Mappings Of The Plane: Eruptions, Lora Billings, James H. Curry

Department of Mathematics Facuty Scholarship and Creative Works

In this paper we are concerned with the dynamics of noninvertible transformations of the plane. Three examples are explored and possibly a new bifurcation, or ‘‘eruption,’’ is described. A fundamental role is played by the interactions of fixed points and singular curves. Other critical elements in the phase space include periodic points and an invariant line. The dynamics along the invariant line, in two of the examples, reduces to the one-dimensional Newton’s method which is conjugate to a degree two rational map. We also determine, computationally, the characteristic exponents for all of the systems. An unexpected coincidence is that the …

Data Compression Based On The Cubic B-Spline Wavelet With Uniform Two-Scale Relation, S. K. Yang, C. H. Cooke Jan 1996

Data Compression Based On The Cubic B-Spline Wavelet With Uniform Two-Scale Relation, S. K. Yang, C. H. Cooke

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential artificial compression which can be achieved using an interval multiresolution analysis based on a semiorthogonal cubic B-spline wavelet. The Chui-Quak [1] spline multiresolution analysis for the finite interval has been modified [2] so as to be characterized by natural spline projection and uniform two-scale relation. Strengths and weaknesses of the semiorthogonal wavelet as regards artificial compression and data smoothing by the method of thresholding wavelet coefficients are indicated.

A Multiple-Precision Division Algorithm, David M. Smith Jan 1996

A Multiple-Precision Division Algorithm, David M. Smith

Mathematics Faculty Works

The classical algorithm for multiple-precision division normalizes digits during each step and sometimes makes correction steps when the initial guess for the quotient digit turns out to be wrong. A method is presented that runs faster by skipping most of the intermediate normalization and recovers from wrong guesses without separate correction steps.

The Inverse Nonstationary Scattering Problem For A Hyperbolic System Of Equations On Semi-Axis, N. Sh. Iskenderov, A. Yildiz Jan 1996

The Inverse Nonstationary Scattering Problem For A Hyperbolic System Of Equations On Semi-Axis, N. Sh. Iskenderov, A. Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, the direct and inverse nonstationary scattering problem for a hyperbolic system of n equations (n>3) on a semi-axis is studied. The coefficients of the system are uniquely determined according to scattering operator. The solution of the problem is generalized for an arbitrary natural number n applying the properties of separation of factors by means of operator transformations to some elements of the scattering operator and its inverse as well as reducing the scattering problem given on a semi-axis to the scattering problem on the whole-axis.

On Affine Selection And Separation Of Vector Valued Functions, S. Alpay, Z. Ercan Jan 1996

On Affine Selection And Separation Of Vector Valued Functions, S. Alpay, Z. Ercan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let K be a Choquet simplex, E a Fr\'{e}chet space and \Phi: K \ra 2^E a map such that \Phi(x) is closed and convex for each x \in K. A sufficient condition is given for \Phi to have a continuous affine selection. This is employed to prove a separation theorem for vector valued semicontinuous functions from a Choquet simplex into an ordered Fr\'{e}chet space.

On The \Ell_{P} Norms Of Almost Cauchy-Toeplitz Matrices, D. Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, we have given the definition of almost Cauchy-Toeplitz matrix. i.e. its elements are t_{ij}= a(i=j) and t_{ij}=1/(i-j)\, (i\neq j) such that a is a real number. We have found a lower and upper bounds for the \ell_{p} norm of this matrix. Furthermore, we have done the proof of the conjecture that were given by myself for the spectral norm of this matrix.

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1996

On Transitive And Fully Transitive Abelian P-Groups, D. Carroll, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

It is a long standing problem of A.L.S. Corner as to whether there exists a non-transitive fully transitive Abelian p-group with finite Ulm subgroups. The principal result of this paper shows that no such group exists for a special class of p-groups if the Ulm subjgroup is the direct sum of two cyclic groups. Some results on summands of trnsitive and fully transitive groups are obtained.
