Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Irradiation Damage In Multicomponent Alloys, Wei Guo
Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Irradiation Damage In Multicomponent Alloys, Wei Guo
Doctoral Dissertations
The development of the generation IV reactors calls for radiation resistant materials. This thesis proposes that the newly developed single phase solid solution of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) can be such candidates. HEAs can undergo the crystalline to amorphous to crystalline (C-A-C) transitions under radiation. The radiation induced amorphous structure is a highly radiation resistant medium as shown by previous studies, and it further transforms to crystalline phases without much structural defects. In this thesis, by reviewing the formation rules of solid solutions and amorphous metallic glasses, it is suggested that the atomic size plays a key role affecting the C-A-C …
Energy Selective Neutron Imaging For The Characterization Of Polycrystalline Materials, Robin Woracek
Energy Selective Neutron Imaging For The Characterization Of Polycrystalline Materials, Robin Woracek
Doctoral Dissertations
This multipart dissertation focuses on the development and evaluation of advanced methods for material testing and characterization using neutron diffraction and imaging techniques. A major focus is on exploiting diffraction contrast in energy selective neutron imaging (often referred to as Bragg edge imaging) for strain and phase mapping of crystalline materials. The dissertation also evaluates the use of neutron diffraction to study the effect of multi-axial loading, in particular the role of applying directly shear strains from the application of torsion. A portable tension-torsion-tomography loading system has been developed for in-situ measurements and integrated at major user facilities around the …
Impact Of Fuel Rod Coatings On Reactor Performance And Safety, Ian Robert Stewart
Impact Of Fuel Rod Coatings On Reactor Performance And Safety, Ian Robert Stewart
Masters Theses
This study evaluates the use of a ceramic coating on the Zr-alloy cladding within a PWR using four ceramic compounds of 5 and 10 micron thicknesses: ZrO2, TiAlN, Ti2AlC, and Ti3AlC2. The film’s impact is assessed for variation on: reactivity, fuel cycle length, maximum temperature, film’s roughness, and transient conditions. The reactivity is analyzed using the following methods: change in the multiplication factor (k) each film introduces to the system using the ABH method, and Monte Carlo software (MCNP). Both methods are in good agreement, yielding less than half a percent change from a reference, no-film fuel pin. In order …
Studies Of High Temperature Hydrogen Related Damage In Welded Carbon Steel Components Used In Refineries, Maneel Bharadwaj
Studies Of High Temperature Hydrogen Related Damage In Welded Carbon Steel Components Used In Refineries, Maneel Bharadwaj
Masters Theses
Five materials encompassing various grades of carbon steel were received from retired and ex-service petroleum refinery equipment for root-cause evaluation of High Temperature Hydrogen Attack (HTHA) damage at UTK. These materials were submitted by three contributors: Irving Oil Refinery (IOR #1110-2), Valero (#67 & #1252134), and Phillips 66 (#555-S1 & #555-S2) on behalf of American Petroleum Institute (API). These materials originated from various flange-to-pipe welded components that were exposed in hydrogen pressure environment at elevated temperatures (> 640°F and >70 psia).
A singular crack originating at the flange inside surface just outside of the visible HAZ was observed in IOR …
Transparent Superhydrophobic Polycarbonate Coating, Gimgun Loi
Transparent Superhydrophobic Polycarbonate Coating, Gimgun Loi
Masters Theses
Superhydrophobicity is a property commonly seen in nature such as the lotus leaf. This unique property allows the surface of a material to exhibit water repellency and self-cleaning abilities. This effect is contributed by two important components: the rough surface topography and low surface free energy. Since the discovery of this unique property, several methods and various materials have been used to produce this effect and used in a wide variety of applications. However, the use of this type of effect on transparent surfaces is still being researched. I have proposed a method to develop a transparent superhydrophobic coating using …
Development And Demonstration Of Critical Components Of Aluminum Based Energy Storage Devices Using The Chloroaluminate Ionic Liquids, Mengqi Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation considers the development of porous carbon materials as the substrates for Al deposition/dissolution in an Al based ionic liquid flow battery (ILFB) and demonstration of an Al based hybrid supercapacitor. The Aluminum chloride/ 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride chloroaluminate ionic liquid is utilized as the electrolyte for these Al based energy storage devices. The ILFB has less capital cost than the all-vanadium redox flow battery because of the inexpensive AlCl3. The feasibility to equip a tank of solid aluminum chloride in an ILFB system aiming to improve energy density is investigated. A critical range of temperature data (50-130 celsius …
