Examining The Northern Shrimp Fishery In A Changing Gulf Of Maine, Ashley N. Charleson

Northern Shrimp (Pandalus borealis) once supported a key commercial fishery in the State of Maine. Since its closure in 2013, the stock has remained in a particularly vulnerable state following recruitment failure, overfishing, and rising water temperatures. Furthermore, without this source of supplemental income, local fishermen have also experienced financial stress following unstable fishing conditions in other fisheries. The collective goal of this research project was to assess factors impacting the feasibility of reopening and maintaining this vulnerable winter fishery. These goals are addressed over 4 chapters. Assessing Economic Performance Of Maine's Lobster Fleet Under Changing Ecosystem Conditions In The Gulf Of Maine, Alexa Dayton

This thesis explores the inter-disciplinary space that lies between fisheries management and stock conservation, resource extraction and economic return at the individual producer level, balanced with societal welfare. It considers policy implications in support of changing marine ecosystems and considers the values of the Maine lobster communities, which depend on it. We conducted a comprehensive lobster industry survey to assess costs and effort expended at the producer level for a representative fishing year, and establish a series of production function performance baselines for future comparison. Purpose: As preemptive pharmacogenetics expands in the academic healthcare setting, further study is needed to assess the views of additional stakeholders in the marketplace on this technology and the barriers and facilitators to their uptake. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perspectives and opinions about coverage policies for preemptive pharmacogenetic testing of third-party payers. Methods: A qualitative study utilizing a blended inductive and directed approach was conducted. A screener survey determined interview eligibility as well as demographic data.
