Prior to European settlement, black bear (Ursus americanus) were far less abundant in the state of California. Estimates from statewide harvest data indicate the California black bear population has tripled in the last 3 decades. Bears inhabit areas they formally never occurred (e.g., urban environments) and populations that were at historically low densities are now at high densities. Though harvest data are useful and widely used as an index for black bear population size and population demographics statewide, it lacks the ability to produce precise estimates of abundance and density at local scales or account for the numerous …

The BioProcessing Demonstration and Training Laboratory was established with a collaboration between Utah State University and Thermo Fisher-Scientific, Inc. This lab was developed into a fully functioning tissue culture facility. Demonstration of tissue culture procedures were necessary for the lab to be industry-fully qualified. The CHO 1-15 cell line protocols were optimized by establishing conditions for reproducibility in shaker flasks and bioreactors (2 to 250 L capacity). CHO 1-15 is the cell line of choice for protein production in the bio-manufacturing industry. Oxidative stress is a problem in the industry because it can cause a decrease in protein production. Natural selection within the sucker family of fishes has produced populations including typical benthic (bottom-feeding) suckers (Catostomus) and lakesuckers (Chasmistes), mid-water plankton eaters, in several large western North American lakes. Suckers of intermediate morphology (shape) exist in a continuum of head, mouth, and body characteristics between these two extremes. All current lakesuckers are listed Endangered, and population declines have been attributed in part to hybridization with their Catostomus neighbors.

This study examined how FS employees in the Intermountain West view forest management in the face of climate change, what barriers and opportunities they see in terms of dealing with climate change, and how different levels of agency management view climate change-related issues differently. Glyphosate-containing herbicides such as Roundup® are a common and highly effective method to terminate alfalfa stands. With the development of glyphosate-resistant (Roundup Ready®) alfalfa, this tool is no longer an option. The purpose of this research was to determine the optimal termination methods to use when rotating from glyphosate-resistant alfalfa into silage corn. Tall fescue is the one of most common grasses in irrigated pastures throughout the Intermountain West. Two limitations of tall fescue are a decrease in productivity during hot summer months and the need for supplemental nitrogen (N). The objective of this research was to compare tall fescue-alfalfa (TF+ALF), tall fescue-birdsfoot trefoil (TF+BFT), tall fescue-nitrogen fertilizer (TF+N), and tall fescue without nitrogen fertilizer (TF-N) on forage yield, nutritional quality, and livestock performance. There has been little research conducted on the physiological response of calves to temperatures outside thermal neutrality and its effects on intake and weight gain. The effects of ambient temperature on Holstein dairy calves intakes and weight gain were evaluated over a 12-month period at the Utah State University Caine Dairy.

Ambient temperature was monitored using a weather station located 1.3 kilometers from the dairy. Calf health was monitored daily using the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine scoring criteria. Calves were fed whole milk and free choice calf starter. Brook trout are native to the east and Midwestern United States. Brook trout have become a popular sport fish in the western United States and are currently widely stocked to provide sport fishing opportunities throughout the west. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) regularly stocks brook trout into high mountain lakes in the Uinta Mountains to provide one of these popular fisheries. Historically the Columbia River was amongst the most productive salmonidbearing watersheds in North America. Currently, salmonid populations have collapsed and are estimated at ten percent of historic levels. Because of this, there are thirteen, Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed distinct population segments within the Columbia River Basin (CRB). The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) operates a substantial number of hydroelectric dams within the CRB. As the dams effectively block anadromy and are thought to be extremely detrimental to the long-term persistence of salmonid populations within the CRB, the BPA funds a series of programs to mitigate the impacts of dam operation. …

Protein arginine methylation is an important post-translational modification that is vital in regulating various cellular processes such as gene transcription, cell signaling, and RNA processing. Protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) are responsible for performing this important modification. PRMT1 (protein arginine methyltransferase 1) and Hmt1 (hnRNP methyltransferase 1) are the predominant PRMTs in humans and yeast, respectively. Despite growing momentum in this field, relatively little is understood about PRMT regulation. Further work discovering how PRMTs are regulated will greatly advance our understanding of diseases where PRMTs have been implicated, such as heart disease, viral pathogenesis, and cancer.

Due to the increasing cost of soybean meal and concerns of excess N being excreted into the environment, new protein supplements have been developed. Two products that have shown potential in increasing N utilization efficiency are slow release urea (SRU; Optigen) and ruminal escape protein derived from yeast (YMP; DEMP). Quaking aspen is an ecologically valuable deciduous tree species in the high elevation environment typical across many parts of western North America. It is a clonal tree species which primarily depends on vegetative regeneration by root suckering after an aboveground disturbance, e.g., wildfire, removes the stems. A flush of suckers will be stimulated after a disturbance and the resulting regeneration relies on available resources from the undamaged root system for resprouting. Additionally, results from long-term datasets allow ecologists to predict how populations may shift with global change. Molecular interactions are weak forces that hold different molecules or different fragments of the same molecule together, and are often referred to as noncovalent interactions. Most of these species are aquatic, dwelling in more than 50 seeps and springs within the over 24,000 acres of the refuge. Much of the research at AMNWR has centered on these unique and abundant springfed pools across the desert landscape. Recent outbreaks of aggressive tree-killing bark beetles, including mountain pine beetle in lodgepole pine forests and spruce beetle in Engelmann spruce forests, have recently affected vast areas across western North America. Changes in land-use and climate can trigger changes in ecosystem conditions and may be driving ecosystems toward undesired “states” that provide inadequate ecosystem services. If these changes are drastic enough, energy intensive restoration programs are necessary to restore ecosystems to previous states. Landscape classification systems based on “ecological potential” offer a robust framework to evaluate and manage ecosystems. The ecological site concept is one such landscape classification system that has been developed by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and describes ecosystems and ecosystem dynamics relative to “reference conditions” and response to disturbance. Spider wasps form a diverse and widespread group of stinging wasps. Although all Pompilidae have similar life history characteristics, there is considerable variation in nesting behavior modes and, thus, this family could be useful for learning about the evolution of nesting behavior in insects. The nesting behavior of many species is well known, the family is monophyletic and easily recognized, and certain species have some degree of pre-sociality, i.e., communal nesting. All these factors suggest that the Pompilidae are an important model group for understanding mechanisms and patterns of behavioral evolution.

Sucrose esters have an established use in food industry as emulsifiers. Two novel lactose esters (lactose monodecanoate and lactose monomyristate) were synthesized and studied for their antimicrobial and emulsification properties. Lactose is a byproduct in cheese production and is an inexpensive carbohydrate source.

The antimicrobial activity of lactose monodecanoate (LMD) and lactose monomyristate (LMM) was tested against the growth of seven different bacteria. Both esters, when dissolved in dimethoxy sulfoxide (DMSO), proved bactericidal against Bacillus cereus, Mycobacteria KMS and Streptococcus suis. LMM/DMSO was bactericidal against B. cereus at concentrations between 1 and 3 mg/ml. LMM/DMSO was bactericidal against …

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are facial malformations that happen during early pregnancy and have a complex and heterogeneous etiology, involving both genetic and environmental risk factors. This project examined the association between maternal nutrition, folate-related biomarkers, candidate genes involved in one-carbon metabolism (OCM), and OFCs in order to achieve more comprehensive knowledge of how nutrition and genetics influence OFC risk. All studies performed in this project used the data collected in the Utah Child and Family Health Study (UCFHS) and the Johns Hopkins International Cleft Consortium.

Soil information is required for arid and semi-arid land management decisions such as permitting livestock grazing or planning vegetation restoration projects. However, traditional soil mapping methods may not provide adequate soil information, because the scale of mapping often requires dissimilar soils to be grouped together and there are no estimates of map uncertainty. Traditional methods are also often too costly or impractical to implement in large, remote, public arid and semi-arid rangelands. Digital soil mapping (DSM) may be able to overcome these limitations. Birdsfoot trefoil (BFT, Lotus corniculatus L.) is a non-bloating, productive forage legume well suited to grazing-based ruminant production. This thesis presents three studies conducted in the Mountain West applicable to organic management and cultivation of BFT. The first is an analysis of lignification in BFT stems that supports recommendations to harvest BFT at approximately 6 weeks of regrowth, or early bloom. Lignification decreases digestibility and is correlated with high shear force required for grazing animals to break BFT stems. Mexican Spotted Owls are considered a threatened species by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Therefore, they must be properly managed and protected by federal and state agencies. In this study I explored the habitat characteristics used by Mexican Spotted Owls in the canyonlands region of southern Utah. I spent three summer field seasons (May-September) from 2010 – 2013 locating Mexican Spotted Owl sites and measuring vegetative and geologic features at these sites. I found that canyon width and very tall vegetation influenced Mexican Spotted Owl presence, suggesting that these owls prefer narrow canyons that are vegetated with trees.

Movement patterns and habitat use of Bonneville cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki Utah) in tributaries of the Logan River watershed are greatly affected by habitat alterations created by North American Beaver (Castor canadensis). Evaluation of cutthroat trout habitat use in these watersheds is also complicated by biotic interactions with invasive brown trout (Salmo trutta) and brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis).
