Bulletin No. 335 - Reclamation Of Saline-Alkali Soils By Leaching: Delta Area, Utah, R. C. Reeve, L. E. Allison, D. F. Peterson Jr. Dec 1948

Bulletin No. 335 - Reclamation Of Saline-Alkali Soils By Leaching: Delta Area, Utah, R. C. Reeve, L. E. Allison, D. F. Peterson Jr.

UAES Bulletins

Salinity is a problem of irrigation agriculture and is recognized as a serious threat to crop production in the Western States. All water used for irrigation, whether diverted from surface stream or pumped from wells, contains dissolved salts in amounts varying from a few hundred pounds to several tons per acre-foot (8,23). Salts accumulating in the root zone of the soil, as water is removed by crop and by surface evaporation eventually, may restrict crop yields. Extensive areas of land in the Western States, which were at one time productive under irrigation, have been abandoned because of the development of …

Bulletin No. 334 - Costs And Returns From Peach Production: Selected Areas, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison Oct 1948

Bulletin No. 334 - Costs And Returns From Peach Production: Selected Areas, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

Peach production in Utah is an important fruit enterprise. Preliminary estimates place Utah's 1947 peach crop at about 933,000 bushels, valued at about $1,679,000. This is equal to about 1.2 percent of the value of all agricultural commodities produced in the state, and about 27 percent of the value of Utah's fruit crop. The 1947 peach crop was, however, about 27 percent, or 200,000 bushels larger than the ten-year average, 1937 to 1946, and was the second largest crop on record in the last thirty years. In terms of value the 1947 crop was exceeded only by the crops of …

Aspen Lumber Grades And Characteristics, Zigmond A. Zasada Sep 1948

Aspen Lumber Grades And Characteristics, Zigmond A. Zasada

Aspen Bibliography

While most hardwood and softwood lumber usually is graded, aspen lumber is not. On the contrary, it is usually sold by the sawmill to the wood manufacturing plant on a mill-run basis. Plants which saw aspen lumber for their own use rarely apply standard grades in sorting the lumber. They usually separate the "usable" from the "cull" lumber, basing their grade breakdown upon the minimum quality acceptable in their manufacturing process. Manufacturers who use only certain grades of aspen lumber, and who buy it on the open market, have been unable to locate sources from which graded aspen lumber is …

Logging Methods And Peeling Of Aspen, T. Schantz-Hansen Jul 1948

Logging Methods And Peeling Of Aspen, T. Schantz-Hansen

Aspen Bibliography

The logging of forest products is influenced by many factors, including the size of the trees, density of the stand, the soundness of the trees, size of the area logged, topography and soil, weather conditions, the degree of utilization, the skill of the logger and the equipment used, the distance from market, etc. Each of these factors influences not only the method of logging but also the costs. The purpose of this paper is not to cover in detail the effect of each of these variations, but to deal with some of the major problems typical to logging aspen. Well …

Bulletin No. 331 - Cost And Efficiency Of Canning Pea Production In Cache And Box Elder Counties, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison Jun 1948

Bulletin No. 331 - Cost And Efficiency Of Canning Pea Production In Cache And Box Elder Counties, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

The production of field peas for canning purposes has played an important part in Utah's agriculture, furnishing some of the intensity needed on her small farms. Peas are a crop that can be handled largely with the labor of the operator and his family and has not required any specialized machinery for their production. They are a suitable alfalfa nurse crop and in most areas do not compete greatly with other crops grown for the farmer's time.

Processing, Grading And Sale Of Utah Turkeys, 1947-48, Paul R. Grimshaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Turkey production in Utah is one of the most important farm enterprises of the state. In 1945, 11.5 percent of the total farm cash income of the state was from the turkey enterprise. In 1946, 9.4 percent came from this source. Turkey production made up 8.9 percent of the total cash income from farm enterprises in 1944; 5.8 percent in 1945; 4.9 percent in 1940; 1.7 percent in 1935; and 1.3 percent in 1930. The objectives of this study were: (1) to ascertain charges for processing and hauling turkeys from the farm to the processing plants; (2) to determine the …

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint May 1948

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

DDT (2,2 bis (p-chlorophenyl) 1,1,1-trichloroethane) was first synthesized in 1874 by Seidler in Switzerland, however, its effectiveness as an insecticide was not known until about 1942. The active principle was first known as G.H.B. (Gesarol-Neccid Base): but in 1943 DDT was suggested as an abbreviation for Dichlore Diphenyl Trichloroethane (Kaaegie, 1946). In fact DDT, as a powerful insecticide is one of the developments made during World War II. The importance of DDT in the control of the common insect enemies of mankind, such as mosquitoes, flies, moths, and many agricultural insect pests is realized more day by day. Many studies …

The Preservative Treatment Of Aspen, Frank H. Kaufert May 1948

The Preservative Treatment Of Aspen, Frank H. Kaufert

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen is one of our least durable woods and is known to deteriorate or rot rapidly under conditions favoring decay. Records on aspen used under moist and severe decay conditions have shown that serious decay and failure of the product may develop in three to four years. Some present and potential uses for aspen involving conditions favorable to decay and in which this lack of natural durability is a factor are: (1) fence posts, (2) railroad cross ties, (3) mine timbers, (4) planking for secondary bridges, (5) sills and other construction members in buildings, (6) the lower logs of log …

Aspen For Veneer, Hereford Garland May 1948

Aspen For Veneer, Hereford Garland

Aspen Bibliography

In considering possible uses for the large supply of aspen in the Lake States, veneer and plywood manufacture should not be overlooked. Although aspen is not currently in great demand as a veneer species, the reason is not because of technical deficiencies of the wood for this purpose, but rather because there is no appreciable veneer industry in the region adapted for using aspen as small logs, the form in which it is most available.

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs May 1948

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa-insect investigations, because of necessity, had been neglected in the province of Alberta during the war years. Work was resumed on this project in the spring of 1946 by the writer.

So much progress has been made in the field of insect pest control since the advent of war-born chlorinated hydrocarbons, that it was thought advisable to design an experiment which would test under Alberta conditions the results obtained in Utah where most of this type of research had been previously carried out, and would thus serve to bring investigations in this part of Canada up to date.

It is …

Utilization Of Forage Plants And Diet Of Sheep On Utah Winter Range, Lisle R. Green May 1948

Utilization Of Forage Plants And Diet Of Sheep On Utah Winter Range, Lisle R. Green

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although there is an abundance of material available concerning forage consumption by livestock on pasture land and in the feed lot, there is relatively little known about the grazing habits and forage preferences of livestock under range conditions. There has been still less scientific effort expended toward solving the riddle of the grazing animal's diet under winter range conditions. Investigators have suggested means to determine the quantity of forage available on range areas, the carrying capacities of range lands, and methods of determining the degree to which forage has been utilized. The diet of the foraging animal is affected by …

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell May 1948

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

At the present time there is a feeling among biologists in Utah that there should be improvement in biological science courses and course sequence to better fill the needs of the non technical student. There are many students filling group requirements with an accumulation of courses which may not provide them with the more important fundamental concepts and principles in biology. Information concerning these courses in high schools and colleges in necessary to provide a basis for curriculum revision in the field. Such information should be useful in evaluating the present system and suggesting modifications. Because of the need for …

Crop Response To Applications Of Copper Sulfate On Salty Soils, Paul D. Christensen May 1948

Crop Response To Applications Of Copper Sulfate On Salty Soils, Paul D. Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the arid west large areas of soil contain soluble salts in sufficient concentrations to inhabit crop growth. Of the 1,416,957 acres of soil surveyed in Utah from 1899 to 1920, Jennings et al (29) reported that 43.58 per cent contained 0.2 per cent or more of salts. The management and reclamation of these soils present serious problems. The difficulties are further accentuated by the fact that many streams used for irrigation contain appreciable quantities of salt. Generally under these conditions removal of the salt from the soil becomes impracticable, and the problem is one of learning how to get …

The Emergence And Survival Of Certain Forage Plants When Seeded In A Saline Soil, Devere Richard Mcallister May 1948

The Emergence And Survival Of Certain Forage Plants When Seeded In A Saline Soil, Devere Richard Mcallister

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Salty soils are recognized as an ever increasing problem connected with irrigation agriculture. Millions have been spent by state, federal and private agencies on technical research in an attempt to solve this problem. Other millions have been spent on drainage projects, land leveling, field explorations and soil amendments attempting to alleviate the situation in the field.

Factors Influencing The Validity Of Pheasant Census Methods, Sevier County, Utah, Eldon H. Smith May 1948

Factors Influencing The Validity Of Pheasant Census Methods, Sevier County, Utah, Eldon H. Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The measurement of animal populations is a most important phase of wildlife management. The initiation of systematic management of any unit of specific game habitat usually involves the measurement of the stock on hand as a primary step. In practice game inventory performs a twofold function; namely, as a medium determining the efficacy of past management practices as a basis for future manipulations and as an aid in the establishment of game protective or removal policies.

A census, in the sense applied in this study, is best defined as the enumeration of a population on a given area at a …

Nitrogen Content And Protein Yield Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Variety, William H. Bennett May 1948

Nitrogen Content And Protein Yield Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Variety, William H. Bennett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Twenty-four alfalfa varieties, representing four varietal groups, were compared for nitrogen content and protein yield. A highly significant difference between varieties was noted for nitrogen content, and a significant difference for protein yield. Saskatchewan 666 had the highest content in the first cutting, but Ledak 22009 had the highest content in the third. Group differences were not significant. Crop differences were highly significant for nitrogen content, yield of forage, and of protein. In the case of every variety, the third cutting was richer in nitrogen than the second and the seemed was richer than the first. Protein yield, however, was …

Aspen Defiberization And Refining Of Product, Robert Craig Jr. Mar 1948

Bulletin No. 330 - Peach Orchard Soil Mangement Studies, A. L. Stark, D. W. Thorne Feb 1948

Bulletin No. 330 - Peach Orchard Soil Mangement Studies, A. L. Stark, D. W. Thorne

UAES Bulletins

Peaches are the most important fruit crop in Utah. The total number of peach trees is greater and the volume of fruit produced for market is larger than of any other fruit. Most of the peaches are produced by a large number of growers who have small plantings. These small orchards contribute substantially to the total income of the growers and it is, therefore, important that maximum yields of high quality fruit be obtained from limited acreage.

A survey of the fruit production problems in Utah reported in 1938 (13) indicated that poor soil management practices were important in contributing …

Bulletin No. 332 - Cost And Efficiency Of Celery Production In Box Elder And Utah Counties In 1945 And 1947, Earnest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

The production of celery by farmers in Utah has undergone important changes in the past five or six years. The most notable have been centered around the introduction of the new green type (Pascal) celery. The methods of production have advanced rapidly, the quality of the product has been greatly improved, the yield per acre has been increased at least twofold, and the acreage has been expanded.

With the growing impetus of the industry have come requests for information on cost and return to the farmer and for an analysis of other economic and physical factors associated with the industry. …

Bulletin No. 329 - Cost And Efficiency Of Producing Sugar Beets In Utah, 1945, Ernest M. Morrison Jan 1948

Bulletin No. 329 - Cost And Efficiency Of Producing Sugar Beets In Utah, 1945, Ernest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

Early in the history of Utah the pioneers became interested in sugar-beet production. In 1852 John Taylor, Elias Morris and others, under the direction of Brigham Young, obtained machinery from France for refining beet sugar, transported it across the Atlantic Ocean by boat, up the Mississippi River to Fort Leavenworth, and thence across the plains to Utah by ox teams. The factory was established in what is now known as Sugar House in the southeastern part of Salt Lake City. These initial efforts proved to be unsuccessful primarily because the "open kettle" method employed was never satisfactory.

Not until 1891 …
