Bulletin No. 335 - Reclamation Of Saline-Alkali Soils By Leaching: Delta Area, Utah, R. C. Reeve, L. E. Allison, D. F. Peterson Jr. Dec 1948

Bulletin No. 335 - Reclamation Of Saline-Alkali Soils By Leaching: Delta Area, Utah, R. C. Reeve, L. E. Allison, D. F. Peterson Jr.

UAES Bulletins

Salinity is a problem of irrigation agriculture and is recognized as a serious threat to crop production in the Western States. All water used for irrigation, whether diverted from surface stream or pumped from wells, contains dissolved salts in amounts varying from a few hundred pounds to several tons per acre-foot (8,23). Salts accumulating in the root zone of the soil, as water is removed by crop and by surface evaporation eventually, may restrict crop yields. Extensive areas of land in the Western States, which were at one time productive under irrigation, have been abandoned because of the development of …

Bulletin No. 334 - Costs And Returns From Peach Production: Selected Areas, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison Oct 1948

Bulletin No. 334 - Costs And Returns From Peach Production: Selected Areas, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

Peach production in Utah is an important fruit enterprise. Preliminary estimates place Utah's 1947 peach crop at about 933,000 bushels, valued at about $1,679,000. This is equal to about 1.2 percent of the value of all agricultural commodities produced in the state, and about 27 percent of the value of Utah's fruit crop. The 1947 peach crop was, however, about 27 percent, or 200,000 bushels larger than the ten-year average, 1937 to 1946, and was the second largest crop on record in the last thirty years. In terms of value the 1947 crop was exceeded only by the crops of …

Aspen Lumber Grades And Characteristics, Zigmond A. Zasada Sep 1948

Aspen Lumber Grades And Characteristics, Zigmond A. Zasada

Aspen Bibliography

While most hardwood and softwood lumber usually is graded, aspen lumber is not. On the contrary, it is usually sold by the sawmill to the wood manufacturing plant on a mill-run basis. Plants which saw aspen lumber for their own use rarely apply standard grades in sorting the lumber. They usually separate the "usable" from the "cull" lumber, basing their grade breakdown upon the minimum quality acceptable in their manufacturing process. Manufacturers who use only certain grades of aspen lumber, and who buy it on the open market, have been unable to locate sources from which graded aspen lumber is …

Logging Methods And Peeling Of Aspen, T. Schantz-Hansen Jul 1948

Logging Methods And Peeling Of Aspen, T. Schantz-Hansen

Aspen Bibliography

The logging of forest products is influenced by many factors, including the size of the trees, density of the stand, the soundness of the trees, size of the area logged, topography and soil, weather conditions, the degree of utilization, the skill of the logger and the equipment used, the distance from market, etc. Each of these factors influences not only the method of logging but also the costs. The purpose of this paper is not to cover in detail the effect of each of these variations, but to deal with some of the major problems typical to logging aspen. Well …

Bulletin No. 331 - Cost And Efficiency Of Canning Pea Production In Cache And Box Elder Counties, Utah, Earnest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

The production of field peas for canning purposes has played an important part in Utah's agriculture, furnishing some of the intensity needed on her small farms. Peas are a crop that can be handled largely with the labor of the operator and his family and has not required any specialized machinery for their production. They are a suitable alfalfa nurse crop and in most areas do not compete greatly with other crops grown for the farmer's time.

Processing, Grading And Sale Of Utah Turkeys, 1947-48, Paul R. Grimshaw May 1948

Processing, Grading And Sale Of Utah Turkeys, 1947-48, Paul R. Grimshaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Turkey production in Utah is one of the most important farm enterprises of the state. In 1945, 11.5 percent of the total farm cash income of the state was from the turkey enterprise. In 1946, 9.4 percent came from this source. Turkey production made up 8.9 percent of the total cash income from farm enterprises in 1944; 5.8 percent in 1945; 4.9 percent in 1940; 1.7 percent in 1935; and 1.3 percent in 1930. The objectives of this study were: (1) to ascertain charges for processing and hauling turkeys from the farm to the processing plants; (2) to determine the …

Elements Of Personality Maladjustment Among Freshmen Students Entering Utah State Agricultural College, 1947, William R. Dobson May 1948

Elements Of Personality Maladjustment Among Freshmen Students Entering Utah State Agricultural College, 1947, William R. Dobson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For the past number of years, in attempting to diagnose maladjustment, psychologists have made and used a great number of tests. These tests have ranged from the simple question-answer test up to complicated projective tests. In any personality test an inescapable question is its validity. Especially is this question important in the so-called personality inventories where the person taking the test merely answers yes or no to a number of questions about himself. In this situation it is easy to see how a person could, if he wished, make himself appear to be "better" than he actually is.

Solubility And Physiological Availability Of Phosphates In Sodium And Calcium Systems, Parker F. Pratt May 1948

Solubility And Physiological Availability Of Phosphates In Sodium And Calcium Systems, Parker F. Pratt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the principal fertility problems of calcareous soils is the lack of available phosphates. The factors which control this availability are not completely understood. One hindrance to the solution of the problems involved results from confusion of the concepts of solubility and availability. Availability is the net effect of the chemical state of a plant nutrient element and the ability of the plant to utilize the forms of the element present under the existing chemical and physical environmental conditions. In this paper, the term solubility will be used to designate the chemical solubility of an element in water or …

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint May 1948

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

DDT (2,2 bis (p-chlorophenyl) 1,1,1-trichloroethane) was first synthesized in 1874 by Seidler in Switzerland, however, its effectiveness as an insecticide was not known until about 1942. The active principle was first known as G.H.B. (Gesarol-Neccid Base): but in 1943 DDT was suggested as an abbreviation for Dichlore Diphenyl Trichloroethane (Kaaegie, 1946). In fact DDT, as a powerful insecticide is one of the developments made during World War II. The importance of DDT in the control of the common insect enemies of mankind, such as mosquitoes, flies, moths, and many agricultural insect pests is realized more day by day. Many studies …

The Drainage Problem In The Lewiston Area, Utah, Sterling Davis May 1948

The Drainage Problem In The Lewiston Area, Utah, Sterling Davis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Often where water is artificially applied to land, means must be provided for removal of some of this water. Too much water is just as bad as too little. The increased use of irrigation water in Utah has caused an increased need for drainage. Some irrigated lands are poorly drained. With high water table, yield of crops has been materially decreased, and with present drainage methods only a part of possible production had been attained.

An Analysis Of The Library Services Of Nine Selected Elementary Schools Of Northern Utah, Pearl J. Carter May 1948

An Analysis Of The Library Services Of Nine Selected Elementary Schools Of Northern Utah, Pearl J. Carter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the distinguishing features of the modern elementary school is a library. The changes in educational philosophy which have made the child rather than the lesson the center of interest have brought about new methods of teaching. The lesson now becomes a challenge to the child to seek out information from many sources: books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, maps, and visual aids. No longer does the more memorizing of a specific assignment mean successful education.

The Preservative Treatment Of Aspen, Frank H. Kaufert May 1948

The Preservative Treatment Of Aspen, Frank H. Kaufert

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen is one of our least durable woods and is known to deteriorate or rot rapidly under conditions favoring decay. Records on aspen used under moist and severe decay conditions have shown that serious decay and failure of the product may develop in three to four years. Some present and potential uses for aspen involving conditions favorable to decay and in which this lack of natural durability is a factor are: (1) fence posts, (2) railroad cross ties, (3) mine timbers, (4) planking for secondary bridges, (5) sills and other construction members in buildings, (6) the lower logs of log …

Aspen For Veneer, Hereford Garland May 1948

Aspen For Veneer, Hereford Garland

Aspen Bibliography

In considering possible uses for the large supply of aspen in the Lake States, veneer and plywood manufacture should not be overlooked. Although aspen is not currently in great demand as a veneer species, the reason is not because of technical deficiencies of the wood for this purpose, but rather because there is no appreciable veneer industry in the region adapted for using aspen as small logs, the form in which it is most available.

The Drainage Problem In The Draper Area, Utah, Stanley H. Van Orman May 1948

The Drainage Problem In The Draper Area, Utah, Stanley H. Van Orman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As a rule, in the practice of irrigation, more water is delivered to a project than is used by the plants, evaporated, or removed by natural drainage. It is now generally accepted that, in the West, irrigation and drainage are necessary complementary practices. With comparatively good irrigation practice the efficiency is about 34 percent; that is, approximately one-third or the water is actually used by the crops. With rather poor irrigation practice the efficiency may drop as low as 12 percent.

A Study Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory As An Index Of Maladjustment In Certain Areas Of College Life, Glenn Rogers Hawkes May 1948

A Study Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory As An Index Of Maladjustment In Certain Areas Of College Life, Glenn Rogers Hawkes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is apparent to college workers that inadequate adjustment to college loses many potential scholars to the world. It is further apparent that many students fall short of realizing their full capabilities because of lack of adjustment. To meet this condition, more and more colleges and universities are instituting and developing counseling services. Because of the increases cost of such service and the extended time involved, it has become apparent that any device which improves the efficiency of counseling is highly desirable.

The Effects Of Serial Testing Upon The Results Of The Standford-Binet Tests Of Intelligence, Betsey Rogers Mccullough May 1948

The Effects Of Serial Testing Upon The Results Of The Standford-Binet Tests Of Intelligence, Betsey Rogers Mccullough

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale probably is the best instrument we now have for measuring the general intelligence of young people. Using this scale we can foretell to a large degree a child's future mental growth; and with this knowledge as an important part of the total knowledge needed for prediction, we can more scientifically plan his further education and his vocational choice.

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs May 1948

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa-insect investigations, because of necessity, had been neglected in the province of Alberta during the war years. Work was resumed on this project in the spring of 1946 by the writer.

So much progress has been made in the field of insect pest control since the advent of war-born chlorinated hydrocarbons, that it was thought advisable to design an experiment which would test under Alberta conditions the results obtained in Utah where most of this type of research had been previously carried out, and would thus serve to bring investigations in this part of Canada up to date.

It is …

The Effect Of Light, Soil Temperature, And Soil Moisture On High-Lime Chlorosis, Lauren M. Burtch May 1948

The Effect Of Light, Soil Temperature, And Soil Moisture On High-Lime Chlorosis, Lauren M. Burtch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chlorosis of plants from a lack of available iron is one of the most common plant nutrient problems of the calcareous soils of the west. The disease is characterized by a yellowing of the plant leaves and is accompanied, in severe cases, by a partial root death and premature defoliation (3). In addition to reducing growth, the disease greatly reduces the quality and yield of plants.

Many types of plants are affected by iron chlorosis. In Hawaii and Porto Rico rice, sugar cane and pineapple are susceptible, while in California and Arizona, citrus trees are seriously affected. In Utah apples, …

Public Recreation In Logan, Utah, 1946: An Appraisal, Beatrice J. Carroll May 1948

Public Recreation In Logan, Utah, 1946: An Appraisal, Beatrice J. Carroll

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Modern writers see varied values in recreation. The necessity for recreation in a machine age has become widely recognized. Its many-sided contribution to good living is being clarified by a constangly increasing member of writers--sociologists, educators, physicians, philosophers, etc. It seams appropriate to this inquiry to consider what some of these writers say.

A Study Of A Remedial Speech Program In Operation In Four Rural Schools In The State Of Utah, John O. Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent speech surveys conducted in Box Elder County showed that approximately 17% of the elementary school children there had speech defects of such seriousness that they needed clinical attention.

A remedial speech program was organized and remedial speech training given at four schools in Box Elder County.

The purpose of this project was to study this remedial speech program, as it was in operation, in an effort to determine the feasibility and value of such a program.

An Evaluation Of The Guidance Tests Given At Utah State Agricultural College For The Year 1946-1947, Robert L. Egbert May 1948

An Evaluation Of The Guidance Tests Given At Utah State Agricultural College For The Year 1946-1947, Robert L. Egbert

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The guidance tests given at Utah State Agricultural College are used in helping students in the selection of their vocational objectives and in helping in the planning of a program of study. The problem of this thesis is threefold: (1) to determine the value of the entrance tests given at the Utah State Agricultural College in the Fall of 1945-47 for predictive purposes in counseling students on vocational choices; (2) to compare by statistical analysis, using the entrance tests as criteria, students from the various high schools, and to compare by similar analysis the quality of students entering the various …
