Processing, Grading And Sale Of Utah Turkeys, 1947-48, Paul R. Grimshaw May 1948

Processing, Grading And Sale Of Utah Turkeys, 1947-48, Paul R. Grimshaw

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Turkey production in Utah is one of the most important farm enterprises of the state. In 1945, 11.5 percent of the total farm cash income of the state was from the turkey enterprise. In 1946, 9.4 percent came from this source. Turkey production made up 8.9 percent of the total cash income from farm enterprises in 1944; 5.8 percent in 1945; 4.9 percent in 1940; 1.7 percent in 1935; and 1.3 percent in 1930. The objectives of this study were: (1) to ascertain charges for processing and hauling turkeys from the farm to the processing plants; (2) to determine the …

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint May 1948

The Effect Of Ddt Residue On The Composition And Digestibility Of Alfalfa Hay, Than Myint

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

DDT (2,2 bis (p-chlorophenyl) 1,1,1-trichloroethane) was first synthesized in 1874 by Seidler in Switzerland, however, its effectiveness as an insecticide was not known until about 1942. The active principle was first known as G.H.B. (Gesarol-Neccid Base): but in 1943 DDT was suggested as an abbreviation for Dichlore Diphenyl Trichloroethane (Kaaegie, 1946). In fact DDT, as a powerful insecticide is one of the developments made during World War II. The importance of DDT in the control of the common insect enemies of mankind, such as mosquitoes, flies, moths, and many agricultural insect pests is realized more day by day. Many studies …

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs May 1948

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa-insect investigations, because of necessity, had been neglected in the province of Alberta during the war years. Work was resumed on this project in the spring of 1946 by the writer.

So much progress has been made in the field of insect pest control since the advent of war-born chlorinated hydrocarbons, that it was thought advisable to design an experiment which would test under Alberta conditions the results obtained in Utah where most of this type of research had been previously carried out, and would thus serve to bring investigations in this part of Canada up to date.

It is …

Utilization Of Forage Plants And Diet Of Sheep On Utah Winter Range, Lisle R. Green May 1948

Utilization Of Forage Plants And Diet Of Sheep On Utah Winter Range, Lisle R. Green

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Although there is an abundance of material available concerning forage consumption by livestock on pasture land and in the feed lot, there is relatively little known about the grazing habits and forage preferences of livestock under range conditions. There has been still less scientific effort expended toward solving the riddle of the grazing animal's diet under winter range conditions. Investigators have suggested means to determine the quantity of forage available on range areas, the carrying capacities of range lands, and methods of determining the degree to which forage has been utilized. The diet of the foraging animal is affected by …

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell May 1948

A Curriculum Study Of The Biological Science Courses In The Secondary Schools And College Of Utah During 1947-48, Merrill H. Gunnell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

At the present time there is a feeling among biologists in Utah that there should be improvement in biological science courses and course sequence to better fill the needs of the non technical student. There are many students filling group requirements with an accumulation of courses which may not provide them with the more important fundamental concepts and principles in biology. Information concerning these courses in high schools and colleges in necessary to provide a basis for curriculum revision in the field. Such information should be useful in evaluating the present system and suggesting modifications. Because of the need for …

Crop Response To Applications Of Copper Sulfate On Salty Soils, Paul D. Christensen May 1948

Crop Response To Applications Of Copper Sulfate On Salty Soils, Paul D. Christensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the arid west large areas of soil contain soluble salts in sufficient concentrations to inhabit crop growth. Of the 1,416,957 acres of soil surveyed in Utah from 1899 to 1920, Jennings et al (29) reported that 43.58 per cent contained 0.2 per cent or more of salts. The management and reclamation of these soils present serious problems. The difficulties are further accentuated by the fact that many streams used for irrigation contain appreciable quantities of salt. Generally under these conditions removal of the salt from the soil becomes impracticable, and the problem is one of learning how to get …

The Emergence And Survival Of Certain Forage Plants When Seeded In A Saline Soil, Devere Richard Mcallister May 1948

The Emergence And Survival Of Certain Forage Plants When Seeded In A Saline Soil, Devere Richard Mcallister

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Salty soils are recognized as an ever increasing problem connected with irrigation agriculture. Millions have been spent by state, federal and private agencies on technical research in an attempt to solve this problem. Other millions have been spent on drainage projects, land leveling, field explorations and soil amendments attempting to alleviate the situation in the field.

Factors Influencing The Validity Of Pheasant Census Methods, Sevier County, Utah, Eldon H. Smith May 1948

Factors Influencing The Validity Of Pheasant Census Methods, Sevier County, Utah, Eldon H. Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The measurement of animal populations is a most important phase of wildlife management. The initiation of systematic management of any unit of specific game habitat usually involves the measurement of the stock on hand as a primary step. In practice game inventory performs a twofold function; namely, as a medium determining the efficacy of past management practices as a basis for future manipulations and as an aid in the establishment of game protective or removal policies.

A census, in the sense applied in this study, is best defined as the enumeration of a population on a given area at a …

Nitrogen Content And Protein Yield Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Variety, William H. Bennett May 1948

Nitrogen Content And Protein Yield Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Variety, William H. Bennett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Twenty-four alfalfa varieties, representing four varietal groups, were compared for nitrogen content and protein yield. A highly significant difference between varieties was noted for nitrogen content, and a significant difference for protein yield. Saskatchewan 666 had the highest content in the first cutting, but Ledak 22009 had the highest content in the third. Group differences were not significant. Crop differences were highly significant for nitrogen content, yield of forage, and of protein. In the case of every variety, the third cutting was richer in nitrogen than the second and the seemed was richer than the first. Protein yield, however, was …
